The Lord will Defeat the Enemy (Zech. 12:4-9; 14:12-15)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/30/2016 11:01 PM

My Worship Time                                                            Focus:  The Lord will Defeat the Enemy

Bible Reading & Meditation                                Reference:  Zechariah 12:4-9; 14:12-15

Message of the verses:  “4 “In that day," declares the LORD, "I will strike every horse with bewilderment and his rider with madness. But I will watch over the house of Judah, while I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. 5 “Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, ’A strong support for us are the inhabitants of Jerusalem through the LORD of hosts, their God.’ 6  "In that day I will make the clans of Judah like a firepot among pieces of wood and a flaming torch among sheaves, so they will consume on the right hand and on the left all the surrounding peoples, while the inhabitants of Jerusalem again dwell on their own sites in Jerusalem. 7 “The LORD also will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem will not be magnified above Judah. 8 “In that day the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the one who is feeble among them in that day will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the LORD before them.  9 "And in that day I will set about to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.”

“12 Now this will be the plague with which the LORD will strike all the peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem; their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongue will rot in their mouth. 13 It will come about in that day that a great panic from the LORD will fall on them; and they will seize one another’s hand, and the hand of one will be lifted against the hand of another. 14 Judah also will fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the surrounding nations will be gathered, gold and silver and garments in great abundance. 15 So also like this plague will be the plague on the horse, the mule, the camel, the donkey and all the cattle that will be in those camps.”

Dr. Wiersbe begins this section stating “Panic, a plague, and special power given to the Jewish warriors (12:8) are the means God will use to conquer the invading armies.”  In the first section from chapter twelve we see that God will strike every horse with bewilderment and the rider of the horse will be struck with blindness.  Notice that God says that He will be the One doing this, and it reminds me a little bit about the story of Gideon when the Lord used Gideon and three hundreds to defeat an enemy of Israel as the enemy went mad and started killing each other, but God was the One who caused that and will be the One who causes this.  Think about the whole world being against Israel in the tribulation period, all the nations going to go against her and yet it will be the nations themselves who will be in trouble, even though many in Israel will be killed, in the end Israel will be the one who will stand against her enemies.

God has promised to look out for His people and He will keep that promise.  Zechariah says that God will make the Jews to be like fire and their enemies will be like dry stubble.  Jesus Christ will be the One who will defend His people as He will defeat their enemies with the sword of His mouth as it says in the 19th chapter of Revelation.

Now Judah is mentioned in this section as they will play in this battle, even though Jerusalem will be the main focus the invaders must march through Judah to get to Jerusalem.  The people in Judah will fight bravely as Dr. Wiersbe says they “will wax valiant in the fight, and God will enable them to conquer (vv. 5-6).  The weakest Jewish warrior will have the power of David, who slew tens of thousands of enemy soldiers (1 Sam. 18:7).  The Jewish army will go forth like the Angel of the Lord who slew 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night (Isa. 37).”

In our next SD on Zechariah will begin to look at the second point from Dr. Wiersbe’s outline “The Lord will Cleanse Israel” and this will cover Zech. 12:10-13:9.

Final Introduction to John 12:27-34

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/30/2016 11:09 AM

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  PT-4 Introduction to John 12:27-34

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  John 12:27-34

Message of the verses:  We have been looking at different things that go along with the death of Jesus Christ and so far have looked at six, and so today we will begin with number seven as we continue this introduction.  The seventh item is that the death of Christ is of supreme interest in heaven.  In the 17th chapter of Matthew along with other places in the gospels we find what is known as the transformation of Jesus Christ when He and three of His disciples went up onto a mountain and there He was transformed into a different form as what I believe happened was that His glory began to shine, and while up there Moses and Elijah came to meet him, and they came from heaven to speak of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.  Peter also writes the following “10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12  It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven-things into which angels long to look (1 Peter 1:10-12).”

Now when the women came to the tomb they found it was empty and were met by two angels who told them that Jesus was not there but He had risen, reminding them that He has spoke of this before His death telling them to meet Him in Galilee.  Now remember when we studied the book of Revelation, the fifth chapter we read in verses 8-9 “8  When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.”  John MacArthur writes “Uncounted thousands of angels echoed that mighty chorus, ‘saying with a loud voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing’ (v. 12).”

One more and then we will finally be done with this introduction and that is that the death of Christ is the heart of the church’s ordinances.” There are two different ordinances within the church, baptism and partaking of the Lord’s supper and both of these have to do with the death of Jesus Christ as seen mostly in the 6th chapter of Romans where we see about baptism, and then in the 11th chapter of 1 Corinthians where Paul writes about the Lord’s Table.

MacArthur concludes “In verses 27-34 we see the God-man grappling with the implications of that death.  The passage reveals the anguish of Jesus, the answer of the Father, the anticipation of victory, and the abandonment by the people.”  That is the outline we will use as we look further into these verses.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It surely is good to review the different elements concerning the death of Jesus Christ, and when we partake of the Lord’s supper it is good to remember these things for that is what that ordinance is about, remembering.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  I want to trust the Lord to help me get through this week, as our bathroom remolding has surely been a pain to me.

Memory verse for the week:  (Romans 6:13) “13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Answer to yesterday’s Bible question:  “Jairus” (Mark 5:23).

Today’s Bible question:  “In what country did Jesus cast out the legion of unclean spirits?”

The Lord Jesus will Visibly Appear (Zech. 14:3-7)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/29/2016 9:34 PM

My Worship Time                                                                Focus:  The Lord will Visibly Appear

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Zechariah 14:3-7

Message of the verses:  “3 Then the LORD will go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fights on a day of battle. 4 In that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle from east to west by a very large valley, so that half of the mountain will move toward the north and the other half toward the south. 5 You will flee by the valley of My mountains, for the valley of the mountains will reach to Azel; yes, you will flee just as you fled before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD, my God, will come, and all the holy ones with Him! 6 In that day there will be no light; the luminaries will dwindle. 7 For it will be a unique day which is known to the LORD, neither day nor night, but it will come about that at evening time there will be light.”

I want to begin this SD by looking at Acts 1:9-12 “9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. 11 They also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven."  12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.”  Ok the reason that we look at this section from Acts chapter one is because actually what Zechariah wrote before this event will happen a long time after the event in Acts chapter one.  Now when we look at Revelation chapter 19 we will also see the return of Jesus to planet earth.  These two angels told the disciples of Jesus that He would return in the same way that He left, and that is that His foot will set down on the Mount of Olives and once it sets down there the mountain will split to form a valley as Zechariah tells us in this passage.  I have mentioned that when Israel was looking for oil in this very district that the geologists found out that there was a great fault found under the Mount of Olives and they said there could be an earthquake there at anytime, but we know that it will happen when the foot of Jesus touches down there at the end of the Tribulation period.

Let us look at a couple of more sections now, first Isaiah 29:6 which says “From the LORD of hosts you will be punished with thunder and earthquake and loud noise, With whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire.”  Now Revelation 19:18-19 “18  so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great." 19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.”  When Jesus returns the armies who were doing battle against each other will then turn their arms against the Lord Jesus Christ as seen in this section from Revelation.

Dr. Wiersbe points out that “The Lord is a man of war” sang the Jews after they were delivered from Egypt (Ex. 1 5:3), but this aspect of Christ’s character and ministry is ignored, if not opposed, by people today.  In their quest for world peace, some denominations have removed the ‘militant songs’ from their hymnals, so that a new generation is growing up knowing nothing about ‘fighting the good fight of faith’ or worshiping a Savior who will one day meet the nations of the world in battle (Rev. 19:11-21).”  These people who are doing this miss what the Bible teaches when it teaches about the attributes of God of which they were all seen at the cross of Christ.

Dr. Wiersbe concludes this section by writing “Our God has been long-suffering toward the nations, but one day He will meet them in battle and triumph over them.”

One of the problems of living in a country where you can worship in freedom is that you, at times do not rely on the Lord to help you get through difficult situations like situations that happen to people who have lived in countries where being a believer in Jesus Christ could cost you your life.  Our nation is at the cross-roads of becoming like those nations where naming the name of Jesus could cost you your freedom and eventually your life.  My prayer is that God will have mercy on us, and that if He does that all believers will live like they are thankful for His mercy and live for the Lord in ways that they have not for too long of a time.

PT-3 Intro to John 12:27-34

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/29/2016 11:18 AM

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  PT-3 Intro to John 12:27-34

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  John 12:27-34

Message of the verses:  “27 "Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ’Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 “Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came out of heaven: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again." 29 So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, "An angel has spoken to Him." 30 Jesus answered and said, "This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes. 31 “Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself." 33 But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die. 34 The crowd then answered Him, "We have heard out of the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You say, ’The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?’”

Now I want to remind you that the theme of this entire section (John 12:27-34 is that of Jesus Facing the Cross and we have been looking at the death of Christ in these introduction Spiritual Diaries and we will be looking at the second part of the death of Christ and that is the subject of the New Testament, and as we look at it through the NT we must realize that roughly one-fifth of the material in the gospel accounts is devoted to the events of the last few days of the life of Jesus Christ.  We have mentioned that chapters 12-19 of John’s gospel deal with this time period while chapter 20 is about His resurrection and chapter 21 is about bringing Peter back into the proper fellowship with the Lord after he had denied Him three times.

John MacArthur writes “The death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ is the climactic point to which all previous material concerning His life leads and from which the Acts and all the Epistles flow.”

Now we want to look at a third section concerning our Lord’s death to see that it is the chief purpose of the incarnation as seen in Mark 10:45 “"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.’”  Now by the way this is the key verse in Mark’s gospel.  Now we will look at the book of Hebrews and chapter two and verses fourteen to fifteen:  “14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.”  On my other blog I am posting my study from the book of Hebrews and in today’s I looked at Hebrews 2:11, so these verses will come up shortly on that blog.

Let us look at 1 John 3:5, and 8 “5 You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. 8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.”

John MacArthur quotes Henry C. Thiessen on his summarizing of the importance of Christ’s death in connection with the incarnation:  “Christ did not come primarily to set us an example, or to teach us doctrine, but to die for us.  His death was not an afterthought or an accident, but the accomplishment of a definite purpose in connection with the incarnation.  The incarnation is not an end in itself; it is but a means to an end, and that end is the redemption of the lost through the Lord’s death on the cross.”  (This statement was written in 1949.)

The fourth reason is Jesus’ death was the constant theme of His own teaching.  In my Bible listening today I listened to Matthew 16-18 and in chapter 16 I saw Peter’s confession of who Jesus is along with Jesus then telling His disciples that His purpose for coming was to die which brought about Peter’s rebuke which brought about Jesus’ answer to Peter’s rebuke where He said “"Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s."”  Yes Satan knew that Jesus came to die for man’s sins, and for his destruction and what Satan tried to do was to prevent Jesus from dying at the exact time the Passover lambs died, but he failed in doing that as this was the plan of God that it happen this way.

Jesus told Nicodemus that He was going to die on the cross and there are many other accounts in the gospels where this is a part of His teaching as we see in the chapter we are now studying in John’s gospel.

The fifth theme of Jesus death comes from the apostolic teachings and we will first look at 1 Cor. 15:3 “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.”  Now we want to look at a small section from the first sermon preached after the church began as seen in Acts 2:22-24 where Peter says “22  "Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know- 23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. 24 “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.”  The resurrection of Jesus Christ is one of the main themes, if not the main theme in the book of Acts.

Sixth, the New Testament Epistles also instruct in the theology of Christ’s death as seen in Romans 5:8-10 “8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.”  In this section Paul notes that the cross demonstrates God’s love for repentant sinners, justifies them, and He also reconciles them to God.” (John MacArthur)

Well we still have more to look at in this introduction to this section.  I once listened to a sermon from a Pastor who preached and preached and then he said that this was just the introduction, but the main part was shorter than his introduction.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  To just stop a minute and reflect on all the things that we are learning about the death of Jesus Christ, how He left heaven to come to a sin cursed earth to live a perfect life being the God/Man, fulfilling the Law by living this perfect life, and the reason that He came was to die in my place, and the reason that He did that was because of His love for me and that is to me mind blowing.  I think that I will do a better job of understanding this once this sinful body of mine is gone and I am in the presence of my Savior and my Lord.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Live my life today like the Lord will come back soon to take me and the rest of the church to meet Him in the air.

Memory verse for the week:  (Romans 6:13) “13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Answer to yesterday’s Bible question:  “Many Publicans and sinners” (Matthew 9:10).

Today’s Bible question:  “Who said, ‘My little daughter lieth at the point of death’?”

Jerusalem will be Attacked (Zech. 12:1-3; 14:1-2)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/28/2016 11:12 AM

My Worship Time                                                            Focus:  The Lord will Deliver Jerusalem

Bible Reading & Meditation                                    Reference:  Zechariah 12:1-3; 14:1-2

Message of the verses:  “1 The burden of the word of the LORD concerning Israel. Thus declares the LORD who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him, 2  "Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that causes reeling to all the peoples around; and when the siege is against Jerusalem, it will also be against Judah. 3 “It will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be severely injured. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it.”

“1 Behold, a day is coming for the LORD when the spoil taken from you will be divided among you. 2  For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city will be captured, the houses plundered, the women ravished and half of the city exiled, but the rest of the people will not be cut off from the city.”

The name “Jerusalem” is mentioned 52 times in the book of Zechariah, and 22 of those times it is mentioned in the final three chapters.  Chapter on of Zechariah we learn that God is jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealously (1:14).  Dr. Wiersbe writes “This statement reveals the yearning heart of a loving Father for His first born (Ex. 4:22) and the desire of a faithful Husband for His unfaithful bride (Jer. 2:2; 3:2).  God’s timing isn’t always what we would have planned, but He is wiser than we are and will keep His promises to Israel.”

Now we move on to “Jerusalem will be attacked” as seen in our verses at the beginning of this SD.

We see in 12:1 that God is sovereign and also that God is powerful for after all this mentions that He is the one who stretches out the heavens and lays the foundation of the earth, and that surely takes great and awesome power.  If we look up we see His creation, and if we look down we see the earth that God formed, and if we look within we find spirit that he formed, and all of us have a spirit, but not all have the Holy Spirit living in them.

In verse two of chapter twelve we see who will be involved in this battle that will be attacking Jerusalem, and Zechariah states “all peoples” will be involved, and so he must be speaking about what the Bible calls “The Battle of Armageddon.”  Joel 3:9-16 says “9 Proclaim this among the nations: Prepare a war; rouse the mighty men! Let all the soldiers draw near, let them come up! 10 Beat your plowshares into swords And your pruning hooks into spears; Let the weak say, "I am a mighty man." 11 Hasten and come, all you surrounding nations, And gather yourselves there. Bring down, O LORD, Your mighty ones. 12 Let the nations be aroused And come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat, For there I will sit to judge All the surrounding nations. 13 Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the wine press is full; The vats overflow, for their wickedness is great. 14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. 15 The sun and moon grow dark And the stars lose their brightness. 16 The LORD roars from Zion And utters His voice from Jerusalem, And the heavens and the earth tremble. But the LORD is a refuge for His people And a stronghold to the sons of Israel.”  Jesus also speaks of this in Matthew 24:27-30 “27 “For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 “Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. 29  "But immediately after the tribulation of those days THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED, AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT, AND THE STARS WILL FALL from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 "And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory.”  The book of Revelation certainly speaks of this battle too (Rev. 9:13-18; 16:12-16; and 19:17-21.”  Dr. Wiersbe writes “Three forces are involved in the gathering of this great army; (1) the nations agree to cooperate in the fight against God and His people (Ps. 2:1-3); (2) Satan uses demonic powers to influence the nations to gather (Rev. 16:13-15); and (3) the Lord exercises His sovereign powers in gathering them (Zech. 14:2; Rev. 16:16).”

Zechariah describes Jerusalem’s situation for that day as he writes “Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that causes reeling to all the peoples around; and when the siege is against Jerusalem (v. 2).”  A careful study of Scripture shows that in my incidences a cup is used when judgment is coming.  The nation’s plan is to swallow up Jerusalem, but they will be fighting against the sovereign will of God, and they will not succeed in doing that.  Dr. Wiersbe writes the following very important statement “History shows that every nation that has ever tried to destroy the Jews has itself been destroyed.  It will be no different when the nations collectively attack God’s chosen people.”

Zechariah 14:1-2 speaks of the nations coming into Jerusalem to loot it and to rap their women, but in the end God will conquer all the nations who are doing this kind of thing.  “1 Why are the nations in an uproar And the peoples devising a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!" 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury, saying, 6 “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain’ (Psalm 2:1-6).”  And at the end of this battle the victory will be the Lords and Jesus Christ will sit upon the throne of David ruling the whole world from Jerusalem.

PT-2 Intro to John 12:27-34

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/28/2016 7:48 AM

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  PT-2 Intro to John 12:27-34

As mentioned in our last SD this section is entitled “Facing the Cross” in the commentary of John MacArthur and so we want to focus in on what Christ would accomplish on the cross as we continue in our introduction of this section of Scripture.

It is very important to understand that the Christian faith centers on the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Without any of this then there would be no Christian faith, and as we think about that when we look at other “religions” this is not present as all of their “saviors, or spiritual leaders” are dead, however the grave is empty for our Savior as He has risen from the dead.  What we are looking at in the Christian faith is the fact that God the Father sent God the Son to planet earth in order to bring about salvation through His life, death, burial, and resurrection from the dead, along with His ascending into heaven where He is at this time.  Look at Revelation 13:8 from the NKJV “All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”  This shows that this was “foreordained before the foundation of the world” as seen in 1 Peter 1:20a “He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world.”  John MacArthur writes “From start to finish, the Scriptures emphasize the crucial significance of Christ’s sacrifice as an offering for the sins of all who would ever believe—a substitutionary offering that satisfied or propitiated the wrath of God on behalf of all the elect (cf. Isa. 53:4-6; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24).”

We will begin to look at four things about the death of our Savior and the first one speaks of His death fulfilling prophecy from the Old Testament, something Israel failed to understand as seen in 1 Cor. 1:23 “but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness.”  Jesus pointed out to those who were walking with Him after the resurrection had taken place the following in Luke 24:25-27 “25 And He said to them, "O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 “Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?" 27 Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.”  I have mentioned before that I would have loved to have heard that sermon from the mouth of our Lord.

The following OT Scriptures show that the Messiah came to die:  Daniel 9:25-27 “25  "So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. 26 “Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. 27 “And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.’”  Notice the highlighted portion where we see that it was predicted that the Messiah would die, for that is what that means.  Now let us look at Zechariah 12:10 where God says “"I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.”  MacArthur adds “As a result of Messiah’s death, ‘A fountain will be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for impurity’ (Zech. 13:1).”

I am not going to quote the passage in Isaiah 52:13-53:12 but this passage shows that the Messiah would be “pierced through four our transgressions” and also “crushed for our iniquities” (Isa. 53:5; and “by oppression and judgment He [would be] taken away…cut off out of the land of the living (53:8); and that His grave [would be] assigned with wicked men, yet He [would be] with a rich man in His death” (53:9); that the Lord [would be] pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief” that “He would render Himself as a guilt offering” (53:10); and that God would bless Him “because He poured out Himself to death” (53:12).”  The unfortunate thing is that even today the Jewish Rabbis say that this section of Scripture is speaking of the nation Israel, I cannot understand how they get that out of this passage that was fulfilled in their Messiah.

There are many more OT prophecies that speak of the death of the Messiah and I would like to quote one more, and that is Psalm 22 which was written by David and vividly describes the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as if David was the one dying on the cross.  This psalm was written hundreds of years before crucifixion was used as a way of killing people for their offences.

“6 But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people. 7 All who see me sneer at me; They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying, 8 “Commit yourself to the LORD; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him (Ps. 22:6-8).”

“14 I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death. 16 For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 18 They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots Ps. 22:14-18).”

The gospel of Matthew was written primarily to the Jews and you will find in that Gospel the words “as it was written” many times or word similar to this that Matthew was using to show the Jews some of the prophecies that were being fulfilled through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

One more thing I want to mention and that is the OT sacrificial system pointed to what would be the ultimate sacrifice, and that is the sacrifice of the Lamb of God, our Passover Lamb, the Lord Jesus Christ, for His death occurred exactly when the Passover Lambs were slain.

We will look at the second thing about the death of Jesus Christ, which actually covers about one-fifth of the writings in the New Testament, in our next SD.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Understanding that much of the entire Bible speaks of the Messiah who would come, who would live, who would die, who would be buried, and who would be resurrected for me is something that, for lack of a better word picture, blows me away.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  To remember the truth that when Jesus Christ died, I too died to sin as is scene in my memory verses for Romans 6 that I am working on.

Memory verse for the week:  (Romans 6:13) “13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”

Answer to yesterday’s Bible question:  “None” (Luke 1:5-7).

Today’s Bible question:  “Other than Jesus and His disciples, who attended the banquet that Matthew prepared?”

Introduction to Zechariah 12-14

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/27/2016 11:08 PM

My Worship Time                                                                              Focus:  Intro to Zech. 12

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:

Message of the verses:  This SD will be a rather short one as we begin to look at the last three chapters in the book of Zechariah through some of the commentary of Dr. Warren Wiersbe as chapters 12-14 of Zechariah are condensed into one chapter of his commentary which he entitles “Redeemed, Refined, and Restored.”

He writes the following introduction to these three chapters:  “In this second oracle, Zechariah takes us to the end times.  He describes the Gentile nations attacking Jerusalem, the Jews experiencing severe trials (‘the time of Jacob’s trouble’), and then the Lord returning in power and great glory to deliver His people and establish the promised kingdom.  What an exciting scenario it is!  But it isn’t fiction; it’s God’s own Word, and it will come to pass.

“As you study these three chapters, note the repetition of the phrase ‘in that day,’ which is found sixteen times.  ‘That day,’ is ‘the Day of the Lord,’ the day of wrath and judgment that the prophets wrote about (Joel 3:9-16; Zeph. 1), and that Jesus described in Matthew 24:4-31 and John in Revelation 6-19.

“Zechariah describes three key events.”  Those three events according to Dr. Wiersbe are 1. “The Lord will deliver Jerusalem” (Zech. 12:1-9; 14:1-7); 2. “The Lord will cleanse Israel” (Zech. 12:10-13:9); and 3. “The Lord reigns over all the earth” (Zechariah 14:8-11, 16-21).

We will begin the first one in our next SD, and in that we will find many sub-sections.

PT-1 Introduction to John 12:27-34

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/27/2016 10:01 AM

My Worship Time                                                                            Focus:  Facing the Cross

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Intro to John 12:27-34

As I look at this section I remember first of all that this is the third time that God the Father has spoken from heaven when people heard it.  Remember at the baptism of Jesus the Father spoke and then when Jesus was up on the mountain with three of His disciples He spoke again, and now in this passage we hear His voice once more.  He states that He has glorified Jesus, His Son before and perhaps He means that this happened when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead “40 Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" 41 So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. 42 “I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me’ (John 11:40-42).”

I think that in this section that we see a little bit about how Jesus was actually feeling about going to the cross.  Jesus was born to die, and to die on a cross of wood in order to pay the price of my sin and for everyone else who has called upon His name for salvation.  We will see more of the emotion that Jesus had as He moved closer to the cross, things like what Luke records when Jesus was praying and He began to sweat great drops of blood, and by the way this has a medical term called “Hematidrosis.” The question that I have is why was Jesus so emotional through all of this and I suppose that because of His humanity, but I really think there is more to it.  We have to remember two things in my view to answer this question and the first thing to remember is that God hates sin, one of the OT prophets states that God cannot be in the presence of sin He hates it that much.  God is perfectly holy and now we see that the God/Man, Jesus Christ is about to become sin, now He will not be made a sinner, but He will be made sin for us who knew no sin as Paul writes and there is a difference.  I think another reason for His emotion is that He will be separated from His Father, which is something that has never happened, nor will it ever happen again.  What we see in that statement is the great love between the persons of the trinity and this also causes this emotion.  I suppose that we can say that dying could be added to this list because the death that He died He died to sin once for all as Paul writes to the Romans and that is different than the death that a believer now dies for Paul also writes that absent from the body is present with the Lord.

So we are going to be talking a lot in the next few months about what Jesus did as He was about to go to the cross as a great part of John’s gospel is about this last week of His life on planet earth.

John MacArthur writes as he begins this 4th chapter in his commentary on the last part of the gospel of John, a chapter that is named “Facing the Cross:”  “Of all the truths in the Christian faith, the death of Jesus Christ, accompanied by His resurrection, is the most precious.  Had He not died, there would be no substitute for sin.  Were there no salvation, there would be no hope.  And were there no hope, there would be no future but hell.”

We will continue to look at this introduction of these verses as we look further into the death of Jesus Christ.  I can also pretty much you that there will be more SD’s on this introduction to this section of John’s gospel.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  One of the things that I look forward to when I get to heaven is that I will not have to deal with the conflict of sin as I do now, and as every believer has to while on this earth.  I think that when that happens that I will understand a lot better how Jesus felt as He went to the cross to become sin for me, and also to be able to have that same kind of love that flows between the persons of the trinity is something else I look forward to.  As a believer I have both conflict and peace, peace that I know that my sin has been paid for and conflict because of the flesh that I still have that makes me want to sin.  I guess we as believers all have a bit of schizophrenia in us.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  I want to remember the truth of the verses that I am committing to memory, to remember that when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord that at that very moment I died to sin.

Memory verse for the week:  (Romans 6:13) “13  and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”

Answer to yesterday’s Bible question:  “The dove” (Genesis 8:9).

God will Judge the False Shepherd (Zech. 11:17)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/26/2016 11:37 PM

My Worship Time                                                            Focus: God to Judge the False Shepherd

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Zechariah 11:17

Message of the verse:  "Woe to the worthless shepherd Who leaves the flock! A sword will be on his arm And on his right eye! His arm will be totally withered And his right eye will be blind.’”

Now when I say that God is going to judge the false shepherd, I am speaking of God’s judgment of the antichrist.

There have been many people who question God, and one of the things that they question them about is all of the suffering that goes on in the world, how many people are killed, and suffer great injustice on a daily basis, and they are probably blaming God for these things even though they don’t realize it.  In actuality sin is what is causing all of these problems and God did not cause sin to happen, but people and angels are the ones who cause sin.  Adam and Eve rejected God’s laws and so sin entered the human race.  Some will look at what happens when the antichrist is on the scene and blame God for allowing all the terrible things that will happen when three quarters of the world’s population will be killed.  We have seen terrible things happen because of Hitler and Stalin who killed almost 15 million people and most of them were Jewish people.

Well as we end this eleventh chapter of the book of Zechariah we find in this last verse that God is going to judge this evil man.

There has been much evil that has happened since sin entered the universe and as we work our way to the end of the church age were shortly after the church is removed at the rapture there will come upon the scene the most awful person ever to be born and as stated at the end of his rule only 25% of the people who began the tribulation period will be alive and many of them will be non-believers and then they will be cast into the lake of fire with Satan, the antichrist, and the false prophet.  That will be the end of sin on earth as we know it now, but there will still be sinful people who will be born of those who are believers and then after 1,000 years God will bring about His final judgment on the people of earth, destroy the earth, bring about a new heaven and a new earth and a New Jerusalem and then there will be no one to blame God after that like they do now.

PT-4 The Savior's Provision for an Invitation to All (John 12:26)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/26/2016 9:35 PM

My Worship Time                           Focus:  PT-4 The Savior’s Provision For An Invitation to All

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  John 12:23-26

Message of the verses:  “23 And Jesus answered them, saying, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 “He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26 “If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.”

We have been talking about verse twenty-six in our last SD, and will continue to talk about it here in this SD.  What we see in this verse is that it cost something to follow Jesus Christ, and it is costing more and more in our country to follow Him because of what is happening in our government.  Now in order to serve Jesus one must follow Jesus “the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked (1 John 2:6).”  MacArthur writes that “true salvation is not only affection but also direction.”

Jesus continues in this verse by stating that where He is will be where His servants will be, and perhaps we can say that when we follow after Jesus in our Spiritual walk that we will become more like Him, and then when our days are through we will be with Him.  I can’t help but think of Enoch, as we learn about him in the fifth chapter of the book of Genesis, and Enoch is also in the blood line of Jesus Christ, any way we read the following in Genesis 5:24 “Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.”  Now Enoch was walking with God everyday and I remember one preacher I sat under a long time ago who said that God said to Enoch as he was walking with God each day that you are closer to my house so why don’t you just come home with Me, and so God took Enoch.  Enoch’s direction in a spiritual way was walking with God which is the way our spiritual direction should be.

We read in John 14:3 that Jesus told His disciples that when He would leave that He would be preparing a place for them, and that means He is preparing a house for all of those who belong to Him.  I read that the New Jerusalem is a cube of 1500 miles, and that is half the size of the United States, but it also goes 1500 miles straight up and that is a lot higher than any sky scraper ever built, so Jesus is preparing a house for all of His followers who have been born again into His family.

Now there is another promise to those who serve Jesus and this promise is an easy one to overlook, but it is a wonderful promise for we read in the last part of verse 26 “if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.”  Now I have to say that very early Sunday morning about four hours after I went to bed I woke up and there have been times in my life when I know that the Lord wants to talk with me, now I am not saying that this is an audible message, but it is a heart message, and Sunday morning was one of those times.  I am one of the prayer leaders for a stewardship program at our church, one of three.  I have a prayer list that I pray for our pastors on Saturdays and as the Lord was speaking to my heart two items on that list came to my mind along with this last portion of verse 26.  Prayer is difficult work.  I heard the story of John Wesley who was ridding his horse around England preaching to different churches when a man came up and began to talk to him about prayer.  Wesley told the man that if he would get down on his knees and pray for five minutes without stopping that he would give him his horse.  Just think of that!  The man got down on his knees and began to pray and about halfway through his prayer he looked up at Wesley and asked “Does the saddle come with it too?”  You see prayer is hard work as Paul writes in Romans 15:30 “Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God for me”  The words “strive with me” is the Greek word “sunagonizomai.”  This word is also used in John 18:36 “Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”  The word fighting is the same Greek word and so prayer is hard work for we have to agonize in our prayers along with fight in our prayers and so this is what the Lord was speaking to me yesterday morning.  I was also thinking about another item on my list where I would be praying for our pastor’s visions that he has for his life, and the life of the church, not visions in a strange way but visions that he has prayed about and asked the Lord to do.  It could be in the church or for something else the Lord wants him to do, and it is my belief that since I have been praying about this for over two years that the stewardship program is one of the things that God wants to be done in our church and so I shared this with the men who gather to pray before our services on Sunday morning.  When the Lord gives you something to say He wants you to say it.  Ok back to this portion in John 12:16c, and I want you to think about God the Father honoring those who are believers and following our Lord.  It is a very big deal, believe me it is big.

A few days after this occurred in the life or our Lord He would hang on a cruel cross and be separated from His Father for three hours as His Father poured out His wrath on the One who did not deserve it, as we deserved it, and the sky became black so no one could see what was going on and after that three hours was done sin had been paid for, for those who will receive this free gift of salvation, and once that happens we are to follow our Lord the rest of our lives.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  To receive honor from God seems to me like something that I could never believe will happen, but that is what Jesus tells me in this verse.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Continue to go in the direction of following my Lord each day as best that I can.

PT-2 The False Shepherd (Zech. 11:16)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/25/2016 8:05 PM

My Worship Time                                                                       Focus:  PT-2 The False Shepherd

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Zechariah 11:16

Message of the verses:  “16  "For behold, I am going to raise up a shepherd in the land who will not care for the perishing, seek the scattered, heal the broken, or sustain the one standing, but will devour the flesh of the fat sheep and tear off their hoofs.

The first thing we need to notice here is that it is God who is going to raise up this shepherd.  This reminds me of looking at the book of Habakkuk and hearing the answer to the prayer that Habakkuk asks God, and not believing what the answer is when God says that He is going to raise up the nation of Babylon to punish the nation of Israel, actually the Southern Kingdom of Judah.  God is going to do that and God is going to raise up this false shepherd we know as the antichrist.  We have to realize that nothing ever happens outside of the plan, the sovereignty of God.  We know that God will not be up in heaven biting His nails wondering what will happen next on planet earth.  Think about the book of Job and at the beginning of it when Job never has anything happen to Him by Satan without God allowing it to happen.

When this shepherd comes no one will want to be victim of what he is going to do for we have a list of some of the things he will be doing in verse sixteen, and none of them look like something good is going to happen to those under his care.  So we see first of all that he will not care for those older sheep that are perishing.

Next we see that he will not go after the younger sheep that are the ones who get lost, for he is not like the person in the parable that Jesus tells when the shepherd goes after the one sheep that was lost, caring for even one little lost sheep.

Next he does not heal those that are broken, and this is a very important job for a true shepherd.  Take a look at Psalm 23 to see how the Good Shepherd cares for all His sheep, along with John chapter ten.

Next we look at those who are the ones standing, and John MacArthur writes that this refers to the strong sheep, those who are standing still and require minimum amount of help.  The only thing that these sheep need is to be feed.  Now once again remember that Zechariah is acting out this part like a play or what we have called an action sermon.  We have to believe that the reviews for this part of the play will not get good reviews as they will probably think “what a terrible shepherd he is playing.

The shepherd does do something, and it is not good either for we read “but will devour the flesh of the fat sheep.”  He doesn’t waste his time eating the skinny, sick sheep, but goes for the fat ones.

Lastly we want to look at the very last portion of this verse “and tear off their hoofs.”  MacArthur writes “Have you ever eaten spare ribs when you’re really hungry?  And you want every morsel?  Have you ever eaten a pork chop the same way or a T-bone steak and you’re bending the bone, you’re getting it there?  You’re scraping in there and your wife has just told you there’s no dessert and you’re going to get everything.  And you literally are tearing the bones apart.  Sometimes you do it with chicken.  You watch people, you give them a wing and they’ll spend a half an hour on it.  That’s this guy.  He is not only eating the flesh of the fat, but he’s tearing the hoofs to pieces to get every morsel, to consume every last bit.”  Now I suppose that is ok for eating food but the antichrist is going to be doing this to humans, now I don’t mean eating them like described here but killing them none the less.

Now the question is why would the people of Israel accept this false shepherd?  Well think about when they were crucifying Jesus Christ and what did they say but “we have no king but Caesar.”
