Condemnation”
Bible
Reading & Meditation Reference: Nahum
1:1
Message of the verse: “The
Oracle of Nineveh. The book of the
vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.”
It was against the forgetful Ninevites, and for the
benefit of His people Israel that God gave a prophet message in the book of
the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. John
MacArthur explains “That this prophecy is referred to as the book
indicates that the text was written down and meant to be preserved.” I would think that perhaps that could be the
truth of every book in the Scriptures as we must remember that God through His
Holy Spirit is the true author of the entire Word of God. Now some may wonder why there are different
versions of the Bible. I have mentioned
many times that I have always used the NASB-95 version ever since I began to
seriously study the Bible and the reason is that in my study’s I have learned
that this is the most accurate when it is translated from the Hebrew and the Greek,
and a small portion in the book of Daniel is from the Aramaic. I realize that there are different texts that
are used to write the Bible in different languages, and if one goes back to
looking at what is called the Red Sea scrolls, and I looked this up on my smart
phone and found this information. “There’s
a mix-up in terms: the famous ancient
texts are the Dead Sea Scrolls, written from about the 3rd century
BCE to the 1st century CE (around 2,300 -2,000 years ago),
discovered in the caves near the Dead Sea.
However, there are also the “Red Sea Scrolls,” which are much older
papyri (4,600 years old) found at Wadi el-Jaraf on the Red Sea, detailing the
building of the Great Pyramid.” Now I
have to admit that I have never heard of the Red Sea scrolls before. Now here is another quote from my smart
phone. “The Dead Sea Scrolls were first
discovered by Bedouin shepherds in late 1946 or early 1947 in caves near Qumran
by the Dead Sea, with subsequent finds by archaeologists occurring between 1947
and 1956, making the initial discovery period 1947.” Now I say this because I have learned that
these Dead Sea Scrolls when they were examined were the same as the scrolls
that modern day translations come from and this means to me and always has the God,
through His Holy Spirit is not only the author of the Word of God but the One
who preserves it so we can have confidence as we study it. Ok I kind of got off the subject of Nahum
here but I hope this was well worth it.
John MacArthur continues “The Lord
went on record regarding what He would do to Nineveh, intending for later
generations to read this book and observe that the judgment He promised
came to pass in a precise way. The
accuracy of these prophecies ought to instill confidence in God’s people. In the same way that Nineveh’s destruction
was fulfilled, so every divine promise will be perfectly realized. Nahum’s revelation was the near prophecy
proving that more distant prophecies will also come to pass as promised.” He then writes a kind of footnote stating
that when we get to Nahum 1:15 that we will have more information to see, so we
will just have to wait until we get there.
“God’s prophecy to Nahum came in the
form of a vision, a supernatural revelation of realities (cf. 1 Sam 3:1;
Isa. 1:1; Hos. 12:10.” I will take the
time to quote all of these verses in the order given above.
“Now
the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord before Eli. And word from the Lord was rare in those
days, visions were infrequent.”
“The
vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem, which he saw
during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.”
“I
have also spoken to the prophets, And I gave numerous visions, And through the
prophets I gave parables.”
Now back to MacArthur’s
quotation: Through Israel could see only their own defeat and demise,
Nahum’s prophecy unveiled the coming of divine judgment against Israel’s oppressors—the
bloodthirsty Assyrians. The Lord
revealed that He would avenge the suffering of His people and fulfill all His
promises, remaining faithful to His character and His covenant.”
Spiritual
Meaning for my life Today: It is good to be reminded that I can trust
the Word of God and if I can trust the Word of God then I can trust the God of
the Word.
My
Steps of Faith for Today: Continue to trust the God of the Word to deal
with my wife’s cancer in a way that will be good for her, and also draw us
closer to Him who knows all things and never, ever makes a mistake because He
cannot.
