Bible
Reading & Meditation Reference: 2
Peter 2:6-8
Message of the verses: “and if He condemned the cities of
Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them
as an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter, and if He
rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men
(for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt
his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds),”
I continue with this section in this evening’s SD. The first time that I realized that Lot was
truly a believer was a while after I became a believer myself, and was
wondering about that but after being a believer for more than 50 years I can
better understand this as all people who are believers do things that they
should not do and therefore are very happy that they can confess those things to the Lord. Now there is something else that I want to
bring up here and it has to do with the account that is found in the book of
Genesis concerning Lot and his life in Sodom and Gomorrah, and then after he
and his two daughters left there as the Lord was about to destroy it. Let me take a moment and look at some of the
things we find in that account from Genesis chapter nineteen. Now we learn
earlier in Genesis that Abram and Lot had to divide their land as they together
had too much livestock, and Abrah told lot to chose where he wanted to go and
he would go elsewhere. Lot chose the “best”
part of the land and then ended up in Sodom and Gomorrah, and the Bible does
not tell exactly how he ended up there but that is where he was living when the
Lord told Abram that He was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Now as I look at some of the verses in
chapter nineteen of Genesis and quote them then you will be able to see why I
was surprised that Lot was a true believer.
“19 The two angels arrived
at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the
city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his
face to the ground. 2 “My lords,” he said, “please turn
aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night
and then go on your way early in the morning.”
“No,” they answered, “we will spend
the night in the square.”
3 But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered
his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without
yeast, and they ate. 4 Before they had gone to bed,
all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded
the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who
came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”
6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and
said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who
have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what
you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come
under the protection of my roof.’”
Now this highlighted portion from Genesis 19:8 does
really not look like Lot was a believer.
Now we will move on further in Genesis 19 to another part of this story
which gives more evidence as to why people did not really believe Lot was a believer
in the Lord as we look at Genesis 19:30-38.
“30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the
mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters
lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the
younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us
children—as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink
wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our
father.”
33 That night they got their
father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was
not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.
34 The next day the older daughter
said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink
wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our
family line through our father.” 35 So they got their
father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and
slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got
up.
36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. 37 The
older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[g]; he is the father of the Moabites of today. 38 The
younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[h]; he is the father of the Ammonites[i] of today.”
Now I have mentioned in an earlier SD about a man who is the head of a
Bible College who came to our church to preach, and one of the things that I
remember about his preaching was that he would tell stories from the Bible and
then say that the main person in his story would not get too many rewards when
he or she gets to heaven. I can
understand why he said that and perhaps Lot would be a good reference to what
he was talking about, and in the end it may be true that Lot will not get many
accolades in heaven, but I am not sure that we are the ones who will decide
this as it will be up to the Lord, but like I said this may be true about Lot.
The
thing that I want to mention is that all believers in the church age are given
certain spiritual gifts in order to us them for the glory of the Lord while
here on earth, and like the parable Jesus told of the three men that were given
gifts to invest with and two of them did good and the other did not do well as
he buried his money in the dirt, we as believers are to invest the gifts He has
given us to work with so when the Judgment Seat of Christ comes along we will
not be disappointed.
One of
those days where I did not get too far into the text we are looking at but Lord
willing I will pick up where I was suppose to start this evening in tomorrow
