SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                                                             Focus:  He explained their peril

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                                         Reference:  Ester 4:4-9

Message of the verses:  “4  Then Esther’s maidens and her eunuchs came and told her, and the queen writhed in great anguish. And she sent garments to clothe Mordecai that he might remove his sackcloth from him, but he did not accept them.

“ 5 ¶  Then Esther summoned Hathach from the king’s eunuchs, whom the king had appointed to attend her, and ordered him to go to Mordecai to learn what this was and why it was. 6  So Hathach went out to Mordecai to the city square in front of the king’s gate. 7  Mordecai told him all that had happened to him, and the exact amount of money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the destruction of the Jews. 8  He also gave him a copy of the text of the edict which had been issued in Susa for their destruction, that he might show Esther and inform her, and to order her to go in to the king to implore his favor and to plead with him for her people. 9  Hathach came back and related Mordecai’s words to Esther.”

We learned in yesterday’s SD that Mordecai was wearing sackcloth and was at the gate that lead into where the king lived.  It was very dangerous for him to do this for if the king had come out then he could have found himself in great trouble with him,  However when Ester sent him clothes to wear he refused them and this enabled him to send a message to Ester through a servant of hers.  I think that Dr. Wiersbe makes a wonderful point when explaining what this servant did, “As great doors can swing upon small hinges, so great events can turn upon the deeds of ‘small’ and sometimes anonymous people.”  So was the case of Hathach, for although his name is given there is little else known about him other than he played a vital role in this ongoing drama that is told in the book of Ester.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  This section reminds me of what the Apostle Paul wrote in 1Corinthians 12 when he was explaining to the Corinthians about the gifts of the Spirit, a lesson that they truly needed to here.  The way that he explained this to them was by using the body as an illustration and then showing them that not all of the gifts are as visual or seemingly more important as some of the other gifts, however they are all important, just as the job that Hathach did in our story of Ester.  Paul writes the following to the Corinthians “12 ¶  For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13  For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14  For the body is not one member, but many. 15  If the foot says, "Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. 16  And if the ear says, "Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. 17  If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18  But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. 19  If they were all one member, where would the body be? 20  But now there are many members, but one body. 21  And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; or again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." 22  On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; 23  and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable, 24  whereas our more presentable members have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, 25  so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26  And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.”

The point that I see here is that when people become believers in Jesus Christ they become a part of the Church, and are thus given jobs to do and gifts to enable them to do these jobs.  No matter what gift or gifts we receive from the Lord we are to use them for His glory, and not become jealous of the gifts that other are given.  We may be that small hinge that turns great doors, the point is that we are to obey and serve with the gifts that the Lord has given us to serve with and be thankful that we have the great privilege of serving the Lord, and bringing honor to Him.  Ephesians 2:10 is one of my favorite verses:  “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

My Steps of Faith for today:

1.        To be thankful that I can be a small hinge that will turn a big door for the cause of Christ.

2.       Continue to learn contentment.
