Intro to Matthew 24:21-28

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/31/2023 8:07 AM

My Worship Time                                                                                            Focus:  “The Perils”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                             Reference:  Matthew 24:21-28

Message of the verses:  21 for then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever shall. 22 “And unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days shall be cut short. 23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or ‘There He is,’ do not believe him. 24 “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. 25 “Behold, I have told you in advance. 26 “If therefore they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go forth, or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them. 27 “For just as the lightning comes from the east, and flashes even to the west, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 “Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.”

This will be the last Spiritual Diary posted for the year of our Lord 2023, and I have to say a couple of things, perhaps three.  It will be a short one; it will be just an introduction to these verses as there are two sub-sections that I will begin to look at, Lord willing tomorrow.  The third thing I want to mention is that I have been posting my Spiritual Diaries onto my two blogs since my wife and I were living in Kauai in 2011 and I believe that the Lord has called me to write what I have learned from my constant study of His Word and put into Spiritual Diaries for a very long time, somewhere in the early 2000’s.  I had studied the Word before that but hand not used the format of Spiritual Diaries.  Over the first 12 plus years of putting my Spiritual Diaries onto a blog the Lord certainly has blessed as people from around the world have looked at them, and that is all because of God’s Holy Spirit doing this.  This being the last day of 2023 I can say that this year there have been more Spiritual Diaries than in the first eleven and a half years, and for that I am in awe, thankful that the Lord through His Holy Spirit has done this.  With that said I want to now quote John MacArthur’s introduction to his section of verses in Matthew 24:21-28.

“Jesus identifies three more signs of His return, signs that will occur immediately after the abomination of desolation and that will warrant fast flight into the mountains.  Those signs will be: severe calamity (vv.16-22), subtle confusion (vv. 23-20-27); and sinful corruption (v. 28).”

I am not sure why he put verses 16-22 here in the first set of verses when in his commentary “Severe Calamity” looks at verses 21-22.  Perhaps it was a typo or something else that we will discover later on.

I want to wish all readers of this SD a very Happy New Year.

PT-4 "The Response" (Matt. 24:16-20)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/30/2023 10:14 AM

My Worship Time                                                                               Focus:  PT-4 “The Response

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                    Reference:  Matt. 24:16-20

Message of the verses:  16 If you’re living in Judea at the time, run for the hills; 17 if you’re working in the yard, don’t return to the house to get anything; 18 if you’re out in the field, don’t go back and get your coat. 19 Pregnant and nursing mothers will have it especially hard. 20 Hope and pray this won’t happen during the winter or on a Sabbath.”

I think that one of the things that believers would want to do, but won’t have time to do it is to tell others of the gospel of Christ.  MacArthur adds “The time for testimony will be past and, by the word of the Lord Himself, believers’ only sensible option will be flight.”

Now we must talk about women who are with child, and little children that people have.  It is my opinion, and not mine alone that all babies will be raptured whether from believing families or unbelieving families.  With that said children who are born during the tribulation period would be very young during the mid-point of the tribulation period.  In his sermon John MacArthur spoke of it was possible that at this time that pregnant women could be ripped open and little children killed.  Remember this will be the worst time ever for human existence, and the fact that 100’s of million babies are killed each year in the times we are living in this will only get worse during the tribulation.  “16 Samaria will be held guilty, For she has rebelled against her God. They will fall by the sword, Their little ones will be dashed in pieces, And their pregnant women will be ripped open” (Hosea 13:16).

In Israel’s early history they saw many of their children killed when they were slaves in Egypt, but one slave was not killed, and Moses would led the rest of them out of Egypt, so God is surely in control.  When Jesus was born and the “wise men” came to visit Him, perhaps as much as two years after His birth, Herod killed all male babies two years old and older to try and kill Jesus, but by that time His family was headed to Egypt.  MacArthur writes “The Antichrist apparently will employ the same hellish activities during the Great Tribulation.  With the Holy Spirit removed and the church raptured, the malevolence of Satan will be unrestrained and untempered.”

Jesus goes on to say “Pray that your flight may not be in winter.”  I have seen in the past that Jerusalem does get cold and at times there is snow because of its elevation, so in winter it could be more difficult to travel.

Next it is hoped that those fleeing do not have to flee on the Sabbath.  You can’t go too far on the Sabbath, and there are people living in Israel today who would stop people from going too far on the Sabbath.

MacArthur concludes:  “Jesus’ point was that no possession would be worth the risk of retrieving and no hindrance could be considered small.  Because of the imminent unmatched terror, single-minded, undeterred flight will be the only order of the day.”

Well one more day left in 2023, and at this time I want to wish all who read this Spiritual Diary a very happy 2024, and may the Lord bless you and keep you as we go through some very challenging times ahead.

1 My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; 2 For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you. 3 Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favor and good repute In the sight of God and man. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.

PT-3 "The Response" (Matt. 24:16-20)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/29/2023 12:39 PM

My Worship Time                                                                             Focus:  PT-3 “The Response”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                              Reference:  Matthew 24:16-20

Message of the verses:  16 then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 17 “Whoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house. 18 “Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 19 “But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 “But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath.”

It is great to know that for the saved Jews there will be divine help in fleeing and hiding.  Let us now take a look at Revelation 12:5-9 to help us understand this.  “5 And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron; and her child was caught up to God and to His throne. 6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. 7 And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon. The dragon and his angels waged war, 8 and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”  I kind of got you in the middle of something here and I hope to identify the characters in this section so these verses will make sense to you.  It is my understanding that the woman is speaking of Israel who gives birth to the Messiah, and then He is lifted up to heaven where He rules.  Israel then is taken to a place where it can be hid from Satan, and I have mentioned before that this could be Petra where Israel will be hidden and taken care of.  I believe that as mentioned this happens after the abomination of desolation occurs which is mid-way through the tribulation period, thus these saved Jews will be cared for by the Lord for the rest of the tribulation period.

Now John MacArthur does not mention Petra but does write:  “They will succeed in their flight to the mountains, probably to the east and south of Jerusalem, perhaps to the cliff caves around the Dead Sea and the hills of Moab and Edom.  John reports that ‘the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, in order that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent’ (Rev. 12:14).”

Let us look at verses 17-18, “17 “Whoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house. 18 “Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak.”  In these verses we can see that the Lord continues to call for urgency as He stresses the need for immediate flight as seen in these two verses.  I want to look at verses 16-20 in the Message to help us get the idea of what Jesus is saying here.  “16  If you’re living in Judea at the time, run for the hills; 17  if you’re working in the yard, don’t return to the house to get anything; 18  if you’re out in the field, don’t go back and get your coat. 19 Pregnant and nursing mothers will have it especially hard. 20 Hope and pray this won’t happen during the winter or on a Sabbath.”

With that we will stop for today and I hope to finish this section up in the next SD.

PT-2 "The Response" (Matt. 24:16-20)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/28/2023 9:46 AM

My Worship Time                                                                             Focus:  PT-2 “The Response”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                    Reference:  Matt. 24:16-20

20 "But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath.”

I promised to look at some things from Zechariah’s prophecy to begin today’s SD.  From his book we learn that not every Jew will be successful in their attempt to escape as seen in (13:8-9a) “And it will come about in all the land, declares the Lord, ‘that two parts in it will be cut off and perish; but the third will be left in it.  And I will bring the third part through the fire, refine them as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested.’”  This shows us that when Antichrist begins to show his true color that he will begin to slaughter many Jews of Judea and also other parts of Palestine, as millions of them will be killed just because they are Jews.  I want to say at this time that killing a Jew just because he is a Jew comes from Satan.  When God began the nation of Israel by giving a baby from a 100 year old man who impregnated his 90 year old wife, that was a miracle for sure, and that is how the people of Israel began.  Before that when Abraham was called by God, a man who was an idol worshiper God told him the following “And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed" (Gen. 12:3).  Here is how we have to look at the children of Israel as seen in this verse; you bless them you will be blessed, you curse them you will be cursed.  Don’t try and do harm to a Jew just because he is a Jew or cursing from God will come upon you as He promised.

Now we talked about how many Jews will be killed at the mid-point of the Tribulation period as Zechariah prophesied, and MacArthur writes “That slaughter will also be a divine purging of the rebel Jews and the third that are left are the saved, of whom the Lord says, ‘They will call on My name, and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are My people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God’” (v. 9b).  The holocaust of that day will surpass every other catastrophe that has ‘occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever shall’ (Matt. 24:21).  As noted in the previous chapter, the massacres of Jews by the Romans in A.D. 70 and by the Nazis during the World War II will pale by comparison.  Two out of every three Jews in the Holy Land will die under the fury of Satan as he enacts the judgment of God on the rebels of the Jewish nation.”

They are not the only ones who will die as many Christians will also die for the cause of Christ, Christians who will come into the Tribulation period as unbelievers but will be converted, perhaps by the 144,000 Jewish evangelists or even by the two witnesses.  Let us look at what the Apostle John saw in the fifth seal judgment from Revelation chapter six.  “9 When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; 10 and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, "How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"  These verses show me something about what will go on in heaven during this time as many thousands of believers will die for the cause of the cross and immediately end up in heaven.  The Lord tells these martyrs to be patient until the rest of those who will be killed for the cause of Christ to join them, and then the Lord will bring vengeance on those who are behind this.  “11 And

there was given to each of them a white robe; and they were told that they should rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren who were to be killed even as they had been, would be completed also.”  It is through the Antichrist and his other agents, both human and demon, Satan will make all-out war on the saints, butchering all he can find: “It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him” (Rev. 13:7).  Now let us look at the outcome of this as his evil hosts are “drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus (17:6).

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  When I was beginning to look at Matthew chapter 24 I was struck with somewhat of a guilty conscience and the reason was because ever since I became a believer almost 50 years ago I have studied the end times, and for the most part had never studied in-depth what the Lord Jesus Christ had to say about it.  Our Lord is talking about what will go on in the Tribulation Period from his own lips, and this is exactly what will go on during that very, very difficult time period of seven years.  What can a person do during this time period, the church age to miss what will happen during the Tribulation period?  That person can realize that they were born a sinner, then realize that that is the reason that they sin, and confess their sin to the Lord asking for His forgiveness, and invite the Lord to come into their life to save them, and then if the Lord comes before that person dies they will be raptured right up into heaven and be with the Lord forever missing the Tribulation period.  If they die they will go to be with the Lord immediately.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Trust that the Lord will continue to use these Spiritual Diaries to go around the world so that the gospel will go around the world in order for the Holy Spirit to give effectual calls to those that the Father has chosen before the world was formed.

PT-1 "The Response" (Matt. 24:16-20)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/27/2023 9:06 AM

My Worship Time                                                                             Focus:  PT-1 “The Response”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                    Reference:  Matt. 24:16-20

20 "But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath.”

All the things mentioned in this section happen right after the abomination of desolation that we spoke about in earlier SD’s.  It is my belief that that event takes place in the middle of the tribulation period, and that is why the last part of the tribulation period is called “The Great Tribulation” as most of the horrors will happen in that time period.  So Jesus tells those who are alive at that time to flee to the mountains, and do it in a great hurry as death will come if they don’t get out of Jerusalem.  Now I have heard that the place that the children of Israel will run to is Petra, a place that is in the mountains and well defended.  I am sure that there will be other places where they will flee to as Israel is full of caves and other places to hide.

The rebuilt Tribulation Temple is in Jerusalem and because of that, which is where the abomination of desolation will take place that is why our Lord is telling these to leave Jerusalem which would be where this will happen.  Antichrist has begun to show his true colors and that is the hatred of the Jewish people and that is because he will be empowered by Satan who has always hated the Jews because they are the people that Jesus came through, and if he could destroy them then the end time events that are written in the Bible will not be able to happen, but although this will be the bloodiest time period in the history of the world it will happen just as prophesied, and our Lord is prophesying this right here in Matthew 24-25 in His own Words.

MacArthur writes the following which has similar thing said in it that I just went over:  “Since God first called and made His eternal covenant with Abraham, Satan has sought to destroy God’s chosen people, the Jews, and their God-ordained nation of Israel.  To have destroyed the Jews would have been to destroy God’s redemptive plan for mankind, because ‘salvation is from the Jews’ (John 4:22).  To have eliminated the Jews before Jesus was born would have broken the line of promise and thwarted the birth and therefore the redemptive ministry of the Messiah, who had to be a descendant of Abraham and of David.  Having failed at that, however, Satan still seeks to destroy individual Jews in order to prevent Christ’s ultimate redemption of them and to destroy Israel as a nation in order to prevent its restoration under His divine rule.  It must be added that God has allowed Satan some success in his attacks on Jews. Because of their covenant violation, unbelief, and apostasy, Satan has sometimes actually acted as God’s executioner to punish them.

“Because they will refuse to worship him and especially because they belong to God, the Antichrist will also unleash exceptional fury against those who come to believe in Jesus during the last days.  As already noted, those nearest Jerusalem will be in the severest and most immediate danger.

Phuego (flee) is related to the English term fugitive, a person who takes flight in order to escape danger.  The only hope will be to run for safety, symbolized in the exhortation to flee Judea as quickly as possible and take refuge in the mountains.”

In my next SD I will talk about why all of those who are fleeing will not make it as I will look at a quote from the book of Zechariah.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  God has a plan as seen in His plan for the nation of Israel, and God’s plan will take place as I have seen in my studies of Zechariah, the book I am teaching in our small Sunday school class.  End result is that I am to trust the Lord.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  God has a plan for my life too, and I am to trust Him to work out that plan for me no matter how difficult it is from time to time.

Intro to Matthew 24:16-18

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/26/2023 9:55 AM

My Worship Time                                                                      Focus:  Intro to Matthew 24:16-28

Bible Reading & Meditation                                              Reference:  Matthew 24:16-28

Message of the verses:  16 Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 17 “Whoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house. 18 “Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 19 “But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 “But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath. 21 “For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. 22 “Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. 23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or ‘There He is,’ do not believe him. 24 "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. 25 “Behold, I have told you in advance. 26 “So if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out, or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them. 27 “For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 “Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.”

I have to say at the beginning of this SD that this introduction to these verses will be very short.  Another thing is that John MacArthur entitles this chapter “The Sings of Christ’s Coming—part 4 Perils to Come.”  I think that it is important to understand where we will be going as I begin a new section, and that is why I take the time to quote from MacArthur’s commentary the last paragraph as he gives us a kind of a road map as to where we will be heading as we move through the Scriptures that we will be looking at.

“Perhaps no subject in Scripture is more intriguing than the second coming of Jesus Christ, and none should be more motivating to the believer and the unbeliever alike.  Realizing that Christ will one day come in terrible judgment, the sensible unbeliever should be motivated to repent and receive Him as Lord and Savior.  The obedient Christian will be motivated to faithfully present the gospel to unbelievers in order that they might have the opportunity to be saved.  The faithful Christian is also motivated by the reward he will receive when his Lord returns, and with Paul he has the ‘ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.”

“In Matthew 24:16-28 Jesus continues to describe some of the perils that will accompany His return to establish His earthly millennial reign.  But before giving those additional signs of His coming, He tells all Jews and all believing Gentiles who are living in Judea during the Tribulation what their response to the abomination of desolation should be.”

Now unlike many of MacArthur’s introductions he does not give us a list of what his titles are and so I will give them now.  1) “The Response” (verses 16-20); 2)”The Perils” 24:21-28).  Now under this last named section there are three sub-sections 1) “Severe Calamity (24:21-22); 2) “Subtle Confusion” (24:23-27); and 3) “Sinful Corruption” (24:28).

Merry Christmas 2023

MERRY CHRISTMAS

I promised yesterday to write a Christmas greeting on my blog on Christmas Day.

What I have today to say about Christmas has probably already been said before, well at least some of it, but if that is the case then I will say it again.  Christmas, to me, holds mixed feelings in my mind.  I am not one who likes going all out on buying presents just because it is Christmas, but want to remember what Christmas is suppose to be all about.  Now we know that Jesus Christ was probably not born on the 25th of December, but we do know that He was born, and probably born in the winter months, and I do not know exactly know how the 25th of December came about as the day we celebrate Christmas.  I suppose a little digging on the internet would answer that question, but I probably will not do that.  Like I say the important thing is that Jesus Christ was born into the world and the first prophecy of Him coming into the world goes all the way back to the book of Genesis, and right after Adam and Eve sinned we read “And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."”  God is speaking of Satan in this passage and also He is saying that there will be war between Satan and the offspring of the woman.  “I’m declaring war between you and the Woman, between your offspring and hers. He’ll wound your head, you’ll wound his heel." (Message)” We see in the NASB that God speaks of the “seed of the woman,” and this is the only time we see this in the Word of God.  The seed comes through the man, but there were three differences in the Scriptures when this did not happen that way.  First God created Adam out of the earth, and then God created woman out of Adam’s rib, and then we read that Mary became pregnant through the Holy Spirit and this is where we get the seed of the woman as involved in the birth of Jesus Christ.

Now as we read through the Old Testament we see how the Lord narrows down the line in which the Messiah would come from.  In the book of Matthew we see the bloodline of Jesus through Joseph, and in Luke’s gospel we see the bloodline of Jesus through Mary.  Both Joseph and Mary were descendants of David, but Mary came through the line of Nathan while Joseph came through Solomon.  Luke’s line of Jesus goes all the way back to God, while Matthew’s line only goes back to Abraham.  One of the kings of Judah, Jeconiah had a curse against him and so his line could not be in the line of the Messiah to be King.  As I said Mary came through the line of Nathan, Luke 3:31 “the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,.”   Joseph also came from the line of David and even though Jeconiah was in his line this did not permit Jesus from being the Messiah for He was not born of Joseph but of the Holy Spirit and Mary.

Now as far as the place where Jesus was born and who was there when He was born, it is not like the nativity scenes we see in people’s yards or in their houses.  I read a historic novel a few years ago and the author incorporated into the birth of Jesus a place called Midgal Eder and this place is mentioned in the book of Micah 4:8 where we read “8 "As for you, tower of the flock, Hill of the daughter of Zion, To you it will come-Even the former dominion will come, The kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem.”  The words “tower of the flock” in the Hebrew is Midgal Eder, and this place was near Bethlehem on the way to Jerusalem and is where the lambs were born who would go to the temple and used for sacrifices.  There was a cave there and many believe that Jesus was born in that cave where these sacrificial lambs were born.  When you think about this it all makes perfect sense.  Now as far as who was there we know that Joseph, Mary, Jesus and later on the shepherds came, but as far as the wise men they did not come and see Jesus until he was near two years old.  They probably came from what was once Babylon and they probably got their information from Daniel who prophesied in his book of the time when the Messiah would die and so they would know when it would be near time for Him to be born and looked for Him following a star.  They first came to see Herod and asked him where the Messiah would be born and then went to find Him, giving gifts to Him and were then told in a dream not to go back to tell Herod.  Herod then had all male boys from the age of two years old and younger killed as was prophesied by Jeremiah.

Okay so the story of Jesus’ birth is probably much different than what we use to celebrate it in our world today as I tried to bring out, but the point of all of this is that God was in control of all the things which would bring His Son into the world to fulfill what His plans were for Him to accomplish, and He accomplished all of them, and we can praise the Lord on this Christmas Day that He did accomplish all of them.  Jesus told His mother while in the temple that He came to do His Father’s will and at the end of His life, while hanging on a cross He said “It is finished.”  What was finished was His becoming sin for us so that we could receive His righteousness and have it credited to our account so that when the Father looks at those who have received this free gift of salvation He will see Jesus Christ and not our sinfulness.

The all time very best gift a person can receive on Christmas Day or any other day is to receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, to confess that they are a sinner in need of a Savior and find out that Jesus paid it all, and receive Him as Savior and Lord.

            Merry Christmas to all!

12/25/2020 10:41 AM  As I was having a little trouble sleeping last night I was thinking about this SD that I was going to put onto my blog and also my FB story.  What I was thinking about was as one reads the story in the Bible about the birth of Jesus, perhaps they think that because of the reason that Joseph and Mary came to Bethlehem that all of the inns were filled and so they had to find a farmer who had a barn and that is where Jesus was born.  I truly believe that the place where Jesus was born was certainly in the plan of God; for God was in control of all that His Son would be doing while on planet earth.  Why would not the Messiah who is later called “our Passover” and also we read the following in two places in the gospel of John “Joh 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!  Joh 1:36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"  It was no accident of Jesus being born in Bethlehem as the OT says he would be born there and so why would not the “Lamb of God” who is our “Passover” be born in the cave where the Passover Lambs were born?  12/25/2020 10:49 AM

I, Jacob Howard, wrote Dr. Charlie Dyer, who is the speaker on the Land and the Book Radio, a question about Midgal-Eder, mentioned in Micah 4:8. This was Dr. Dyer’s response.

Jacob,

Thank you for your e-mail, and thanks as well for your kind words! Denny and I both appreciate the privilege God has given us to serve Him in this way. You have encouraged us both!

As far as Midgal Eder is concerned, there is no universal identification of the site. But I do believe it was a real site. The best thing I’ve read on the subject is from Alfred Edersheim’s The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah. (You can find his complete work online at Google Books.) I’ll include his quotation here, and then I’ll follow it with a few observations. (I’ll also highlight the key point he makes in the quote.)

But as we pass from the sacred gloom of the cave [i.e., he was just talking about the birth of Jesus in a cave] out into the night, its sky all aglow with starry brightness, its loneliness is peopled, and its silence made vocal from heaven. There is nothing now to conceal, but much to reveal, though the manner of it would seem strangely incongruous to Jewish thinking. And yet Jewish tradition may here prove both illustrative and helpful. That the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem, was a settled conviction. Equally so was the belief, that He was to be revealed from Midgal Eder, “the tower of the flock.” This Midgal Eder was not the watchtower for the ordinary flocks which pastured on the barren sheep ground beyond Bethlehem, but lay close to the town, on the road to Jerusalem. A passage in the Mishnah leads to the conclusion, that the flocks, which pastured there, were destined for Temple-sacrifices, and, accordingly, that the shepherds, who watched over them, were not ordinary shepherds. The latter were under the ban of Rabbinism, on account of their necessary isolation from religious ordinances, and their manner of life, which rendered strict legal observance unlikely, if not absolutely impossible. The same Mishnaic passage also leads us to infer, that these flocks lay out all the year round, since they are spoken of as in the fields thirty days before the Passover—that is, in the month of February, when in Palestine the average rainfall is nearly greatest. Thus, Jewish tradition in some dim manner apprehended the first revelation of the Messiah from that Migdal Eder, where shepherds watched the Temple-flocks all the year round. Of the deep symbolic significance of such a coincidence, it is needless to speak.

—Alfred Edersheim, The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, pp. 186-87

If Edersheim is correct (and I believe he is), the location for Midgal Eder would be north of Bethlehem and near the old road from Bethlehem to Jerusalem. (That road is the old “Hebron road” one drives on between Jerusalem and Bethlehem today!) I believe this puts the location  somewhere between the Jewish kibbutz of Ramat Rachel and Bethlehem, probably just to the west of Har Homa. There used to be an actual sheepfold in this area where I would take our groups but, sadly, it has been covered over by the modern road that now goes to Har Homa.

A key point here. Edersheim indicates that Migdal Eder was an actual spot, but he is not saying it was a town or village. Rather, the name means “watchtower of the flock” which seems to identify it as a specific pasture area for sheep. And the sheep that grazed here were those specifically destined for Temple sacrifice. In that sense the shepherds keeping watch over the temple sacrifices were the ones to whom God announced the birth of the ultimate “sacrificial lamb.”

I’m attaching a screen shot from Google Earth that might be of help in identifying the location for Midgal Eder. Note that Ramat Rachel is at the top of the picture and Bethlehem is at the bottom. The road running along the left side of the picture is the old Hebron Road, and Homat Shemu’el/Har Homa is just to the right of center in the picture. Based on Edersheim’s description, I would place Migdal Eder almost in the center of the picture…north of Bethlehem, just to the west of Har Homa, and east of the road from Bethlehem to Jerusalem. Since the word means “tower of the flock” it is likely a high spot in this area where sheep would graze. The hills right around (or right at) Har Homa are probably the best possible location.

I hope this is helpful!

Charlie

PT-6 "The Abomination of Desolation" (Matt. 24:15)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/24/2023 8:07 AM

My Worship Time                                                   Focus PT-6 “The Abomination of Desolation”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                     Reference: Matthew 24:15

Message of the verse:  15 “Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),”

I continue to quote from John MacArthur’s commentary on this verse from Matthew.

“Halfway through the final week of years, at the end of the first three and a half years, the deceptive leader of the western confederacy (Antichrist) will violently turn against Israel, set himself up as God, and commit the abomination of desolation that activates the Great Tribulation, which brings about intense persecution of Jews.

“Interpreters have proposed numerous identities for the holy place, some suggesting it is the city of Jerusalem and others that it is the holy of holies, the inner sanctum of the Temple.  In the only other passage where the phrase is used in the New Testament, it plainly refers to the ‘Temple itself  (Acts 21:28), and that seems to be the only reasonable meaning to take for it in Matthew 24:15.  David also referred to the Temple as the Lord’s holy place (see Ps. 24:3).

“And from the time that the regular sacrifices is abolished, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1290 days’ (Dan. 12:11).  The desecration of the Temple will not be momentary but continuous, described by Jesus as standing in the holy place.  From the time the daily sacrifices is canceled and the abomination of desolation beings, 1290 days will pass until the end, 30 more days than three and one half years.  Yet according to Revelation 12:6, the Great Tribulation will last 1260 days.  It seems that the best explanation for those additional days is that they will cover the time when the Messiah descends on the Mount of Olives, creates the great valley in which the nations of the world will be judged, and executives that judgment (see Zech. 14:4-5; Matt. 25:31-46).

“Daniel continues by saying ‘How blessed is he who keeps waiting and attains to the 1335 days!’ (Dan. 12:12), which adds an additional 45 days.  That additional time would seem to be a transition period during which the Lord establishes His throne in Jerusalem and sets up places of leadership throughout the earth that will be governed in His behalf by His appointed representatives.  So there are the 1260 days of trouble, followed by 30 days to break down man’s kingdom and 45 days to set up the Lord’s.”

“Further details of the abomination of desolation are given in the book of Revelation.  Pictured as the beast coming up out of the sea, the Antichrist will be given ‘a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies; and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him’ (Rev. 13:1, 5).  Forty-two months translates into three and a half years, or 1260 days, which will be the Great Tribulation, the second half of the 1260 days, which will be the last week of years.  As the Antichrist continues his blasphemies against God’s name, tabernacle, and heavenly citizens, ‘it was given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them; and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him.  And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain’ (vv. 7-8).  His cohort, the false prophet, will then join him and perform great signs and wonders in order to promote the worship of the Antichrist and will even enable an image of the beast to talk and cause the deaths of those who refuse to worship (vv. 11-15).

Antiochus Epiphanes set up an idol in the Temple to be worshiped by the Jews, but the Antichrist will set himself up as God and demand worship from all mankind.  He will end all sacrifice in the Temple and commit the abomination that makes the holy place desecrated and desolate, a place utterly detestable to Jews.

“Then the Antichrist, the man of lawlessness, ‘the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship,…takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God’ (2 Thess. 2:3-4).  He is ‘the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved’ (vv. 9-10).  That is the abomination of desolation.

“The exhortation let the reader understand reinforces the fact that Jesus was not giving the warnings in the Olivet discourse to the disciples themselves or to their generation but to believers in the end time, who will read those truths in Scripture and thereby be enabled to understand the trials they are enduring.”

With that I am finished quoting for MacArthur’s commentary on Matthew 24:15.  Tomorrow I want to put on my blogs something about Christmas.  With that have a merry Christmas.

PT-5 "The Abomination of Desolation" (Matt. 24:15)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/23/2023 8:25 AM

My Worship Time                                               Focus:  “PT-5 “The Abomination of Desolation”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                    Reference:  Matthew 24:15

Message of the verse:  “Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), (24:15)”

I continue quoting from John MacArthur’s commentary written in 1989, and it looks like I will be able to finish this quotation in the next SD.

“Daniel had predicted:  Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place” (9:24).  In other words, 490 years would transpire before the Messiah would return to establish His eternal kingdom of righteousness.  As Daniel explained in the following verse, that measurement would begin at ‘the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem,’ the decree issued by King Artaxerxes in 445 B. C. (see Neh. 2:5-6).  The prophet also explained that ‘seven weeks and sixty-two weeks’ (69 weeks, or 483 years) would pass ‘until Messiah the Prince’ (Dan. 9:25).  It has been calculated that exactly 483 elapsed from that decree of Artaxerxes until Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when He was acclaimed Messiah and King by the multitude (for detailed explanation of those dates, see Harold Hoehner’s Chorological Aspects of the Life of Christ [Grand Rapids: Zondervan 1971]).

“After that time and before the seventieth and final week of years, ‘the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary’ (Dan. 9:26).  That is a picture of Jesus’ crucifixion and of the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in A. D. 70.

“Then the deceitful prince ‘will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate’ (v. 27).  The last week, or seven-year period, of the seventy weeks will begin when Israel makes a covenant with the Antichrist, thinking he will be her great deliverer.”

Now as I quote this next paragraph remember that this was written in 1989, and there are a lot of things going on now that were not going on then.

“In modern Israel, fear of the Arabs and the Russians runs very deep.  Not only do those combined enemies outnumber Israel in manpower and weaponry by several hundred times but their hatred for Jews is intense.  Ezekiel prophesied that Magog (identified by Josephus as the land of what is now Russia), Meshech and Tubal (Asia Minor, or modern Turkey), Persia (modern Iran and Afghanistan), Ethiopia (including modern Sudan), Put (Libya), and other nations will unite against Israel (Ezek. 38:2-6).”

A couple of things I want to mention, and that is on Christmas day I will post a SD that I posted in 2017 about Christmas, and I believe that this is a good reminder of where Christ was born in the town of Bethlehem.  The other thing is that with the war that has been going on in Israel for the last 76 days it shows me that things are beginning to really form in the way that the last days before the rapture of the church will happen.  I have stated that I have learned that it is not believed that the United States will be a major player in the Tribulation period, so that means that we will have to fall from the world’s stage of being so powerful.  My hope is that if the rapture would happen soon then that would be the reason that the United States would fall from being a powerful nation.  The war in Israel is a war of good against evil as many people around Israel would desire to have Israel destroyed and all of its people.  Hamas has in its doctrinal statement, according to Joel Rosenberg that they will be rewarded if they kill Jewish people, and that is Satanic and evil.  Bottom line is to be in prayer for the people of Israel, especially the soldiers and those in charge of their government.  Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
