SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  Bildad’s shortest speech

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                  Reference:  Job 25:1-6

Message of the verses:  This 25th chapter of Job is the shortest chapter in the book, as is the speech that is given in it is also the shortest.  In today’s SD we begin a new chapter in Dr. Wiersbe’s commentary on Job and he entitles this chapter “How Faint A Whisper!”  This chapter covers four chapters in the book of Job, 25-28 and three of the chapters contain speeches by Job.  We will just look at this short 25th chapter in this SD.

“1 ¶  Then Bildad the Shuhite answered, 2  "Dominion and awe belong to Him Who establishes peace in His heights. 3  "Is there any number to His troops? And upon whom does His light not rise? 4  "How then can a man be just with God? Or how can he be clean who is born of woman? 5  "If even the moon has no brightness And the stars are not pure in His sight, 6  How much less man, that maggot, And the son of man, that worm!’”  (NASB)

“1 ¶  Bildad the Shuhite again attacked Job: 2  "God is sovereign, God is fearsome—everything in the cosmos fits and works in his plan. 3  Can anyone count his angel armies? Is there any place where his light doesn’t shine? 4  How can a mere mortal presume to stand up to God? How can an ordinary person pretend to be guiltless? 5  Why, even the moon has its flaws, even the stars aren’t perfect in God’s eyes, 6  So how much less, plain men and women—slugs and maggots by comparison!’”  (Message)

The first three verses focus on God’s power and then the last three verses focus in on God’s justice.  These are actually two of God’s attributes that are being discussed here.  Job’s friends speak as if they know all about God and I would suppose that this is true in today’s world too.  Bishop Brooke F. Westcott said the following, “Every year makes me tremble at the daring with which people speak of spiritual things.”  When we get to the end of this book and hear what the Lord has to say we will see that He tells Job and all of his friends that they actually know little about God, however God will ask Job to make a sacrifice for his friends.

When we read the Bible we see that God is all powerful, and we can see this demonstrated throughout all of Scripture.  We surely see it in creation and even in the book of Job we will see God speak of His creation.  We see God’s power throughout the OT when we begin to think about the flood, and the ten miracles that God did to get Israel out of Egypt.  When we get to the NT we see the power of God in the Lord Jesus Christ as He raised people from the dead, when He calmed the storms, when He healed many people, and when He walked on the water.  The resurrection of Jesus Christ demonstrates the power of God too.

We now look at the justice of God and since God is light and in Him is no darkness we know by this that He is just, but man is not for all men are born of woman and are fathered by men and therefore the sin nature is passed down by the man, so all are born with this sin nature.  Psalm 51:5 says, “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.”  Remember that is the importance of the virgin birth.  We need to also remember that Job is saying that it was not his sin that caused all these problems to fall on him.

Bildad speaks of the brilliance of the moon and the stars and says that they are not pure, so how can man claim to be pure or righteous before God.

As we look at the next three chapters we will see Job’s reply to Bildad.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I can’t understand it but it seems to me that Job is kind of wearing me down.  Job is a book in the Bible that I have not really looked forward to doing a study of, for as I mentioned before I have never really understood certain parts of Job, especially the parts where the men are speaking to each other, they are difficult for me to understand.  I am beginning to understand more about the book of Job through the help of Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on Job, but for some reason I am struggling to keep up with my study, as I have hardly ever waited to the evening to do my SD, and for the last three days it has been done in the evening.

I think that one of the things that I have learned from this short section is that I need to be careful when talking about certain things from the Scripture that perhaps I do not know as much about as I think I do.  I need to study before talking about certain things.
