God's Word Protected PT-1 (Jer. 36:1-4, 17-18)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 7/15/2014 9:03 AM

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  God’s Word Protected PT-1

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Jeremiah 36:1-4, 17-18

Message of the verses:  We will look at the introduction to this second main-point and the first sub-point from Warren Wiersbe’s outline today.

As we look at the first verse of chapter thirty-six we can see the date when Jeremiah received this message from the Lord as it was in the fourth year of Jehoiakim who was the king of Judah at this time.  John MacArthur writes “This chapter, like chapter 35, goes back several years earlier than chapters 32-34, before or shortly after the first of 3 deportations from Jerusalem to Babylon in 605 B.C.”

Dr. Wiersbe points out that as we look at this chapter we will see the first scroll of Jeremiah will be burned by the king and then God tells Jeremiah to write another scroll and this second scroll will have more information on it.  We see that the first scroll had messages concerning Israel, and Judah, and all the nations.  The second scroll will have more messages about the nations from chapters 45-51, and the nations will be those in the Near East.

God gives His Word (Jeremiah 36:1-4, 17-18):  “1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2  "Take a scroll and write on it all the words which I have spoken to you concerning Israel and concerning Judah, and concerning all the nations, from the day I first spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day. 3  "Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the calamity which I plan to bring on them, in order that every man will turn from his evil way; then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin." 4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD which He had spoken to him.

“17 And they asked Baruch, saying, "Tell us, please, how did you write all these words? Was it at his dictation?" 18 Then Baruch said to them, "He dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink on the book."”

Dr. Wiersbe points out “This is what theologians call inspiration—that miraculous working of the Holy Spirit through a human writer so that what was written was the divine Word that God wanted recorded (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21).  “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16).”  “20  But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21  for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God (2 Peter 1:20-21).”

The following is an endnote from Dr. Wiersbe’s commentary:  “What was recorded is revelation; the way it was recorded is inspiration.  Never confuse divine inspiration with ‘human inspiration’ of great writers like Shakespeare and Milton.”

Wiersbe goes on to explain:  “Inspiration is not some kind of ‘heavenly dictation,’ as though God completely bypassed the writer, for the authors of the various books of the Bible have their own distinctive styles and vocabularies.  Without making him a robot, God guided Jeremiah in his choice of words; Jeremiah spoke these words to his secretary Baruch; and Baruch wrote them down in the scroll.”  Remember that we met Baruch in an earlier chapter of Jeremiah and that he was from royalty, but still became the secretary for Jeremiah.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It is good for me to get the two terms of inspiration and revelation so that I can better understand them.  I once was asked to explain revelation in a church service a long time ago and now I could explain the answer better now than at that time.  We see that when we read 2 Timothy 3:16  in the Message we get a better idea of what Paul was writing “Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way.”  I am thankful that when I am reading the Word of God that I can trust what I am reading so that it can make a difference in how I conduct my life.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Trust what I read in the Word of God as it is God breathed and reliable.

Memory verse for today:  Colossians 3:1.

1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things  above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

Answer to yesterday’s Bible question:  “Weep” (Genesis 43:29-30).

Today’s Bible question:  “What sin will not be forgotten?”  This sin is called the unpardonable sin.

Answer in our next SD.
