Introduction to Amos Chapter Four

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9/8/2015 11:52 PM

My Worship Time                                                                           Focus:  Introduction to Amos 4

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                           Reference:  Amos 4:1

Message of the verses:  “1 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan who are on the mountain of Samaria, Who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, Who say to your husbands, "Bring now, that we may drink!"”

I want to give a reminder of what we wrote about when we began to look at Amos chapter three as Dr. Wiersbe gave us an outline to follow where he wrote “The first message (Amos 3:1) was one of explanation, in which Amos clarified four divine calls and announced that Israel’s judgment was certain.  His second message (4:1-13) focused on accusation, in which the prophet denounced Israel’s sins.  The final message (5:1-6:14) was a lamentation as the prophet felt the anguish of his nations certain doom.”  We will be looking at the second message that of accusation as we go through the fourth chapter of the book of Amos.

In his beginning commentary on this section of Amos Dr. Wiersbe speaks of a time when he and a friend of his who was also a Pastor went to listen to a famous Pastor from another country.  In his message the Pastor listed some of the sins that were prevalent in our country during the time period that he visited the U.S.  My speculation that he would have a lot longer list if he came today, but the pastor friend of Dr. Wiersbe said that he did not like to hear this famous pastor speak of the sins that were going on in our country.  Now how do you think that the people of Israel felt when Amos who was from Judah came to talk to them about the sins that were going on in their land?  My guess is that they would not like it, but there was nothing wrong with Amos speaking to the Northern Kingdom of Israel for after all they were brothers of those who lived in Judah.  But even that should not matter for after all we all came from the loins of Adam and Eve and therefore we are all relative to each other no matter how fare related we are.  I know that some people will take issue with that statement but there is only one race on planet earth and that race is the human race which we are all a part of.  I challenge all to go to the “Answers in Genesis website to get more information on this very important subject.

Dr. Wiersbe concludes his introductory commentary with the following:  “In this second message, the Prophet Amos named three particular sins that were grieving the Lord and ruining the kingdom of Israel:  luxury (4:1-3), hypocrisy (vv. 4-5), and obstinacy (vv. 6-13).  They had the wrong values; their religious ‘revival’ was a sham; and they refused to listen to the warnings God had given them.”  Similar sins are mentioned in Revelations chapter eighteen as God was about to judge Babylon as we are learning from our study in Revelation.
