SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 8/8/2021 10:21 AM
My Worship Time Focus:
PT-2 “Andrew”
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Matthew
10:2b
Message of the
verse: “and
Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;”
We continue to look at different
points that we find in the Bible about the Apostle named Andrew as we look
first at the third point as John depicts Andrew bringing others to the Lord,
which is a very special quality that Andrew had.
We
have already talked about Andrew bringing his brother Peter to see Jesus and
now a bit later in the gospel of John we see the following “20 Now there were
some Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the feast; 21 these
then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask
him, saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." 22 Philip came and told Andrew;
Andrew and Philip came and told Jesus” (John 12:20-22). It seems apparent that Philip, one of the
Twelve was not comfortable to tell Jesus about these Greeks, and so he enlisted
the help of Andrew.
This
third point that we just looked at is actually the last listed point we will
look at but there is much more to be seen.
Now I want to quote from MacArthur’s commentary and this quotation has
to do with what we looked at in our last SD as well as this section we have
looked at in today’s SD. “From these three accounts we can discern several
insights into the character of Andrew.
First of all we see his openness and lack of prejudice. He knew that the disciples’ first priority,
but not their only task, was to take the gospel to their fellow Jews, ‘the lost
sheep of the house of Israel’ (Matt. 10:6).
But he also must have known that the person to whom Jesus Himself first
revealed His messiahship was a half-breed Samaritan woman, who trusted in Him
and, like Andrew, immediately began telling others of Him (John 4:25-29,
40-42).”
One
of the qualities that Andrew had was that he was characterized by simple but strong
faith. As we go back to talk a bit about
when he brought the boy to Jesus who had brought his lunch with him, we really
don’t know what was in his mind, but like I said yesterday it could have been
that Andrew remembered when Jesus turned water into wine.
Another
quality that Andrew had was that he certainly seemed to be humble. Throughout
his ministry he was known primarily as Peter’s brother, and he was never as
intimate with Jesus or even used by Him as publicly or dramatically as was his
brother. Now we have mentioned that Andrew
was a part of Jesus’ inner-circle, but you surely don’t see him in as much
activity as the other three, Peter, James, and John. It takes a humble person to take on the role that
Andrew had to follow, and that is that he knew his place in following Jesus and
all he had to do was to concentrate on the things that he was to do and not
worry about getting ahead in the pecking order.
This should be the case with other believers as I have mentioned time
and time again Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ
Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in
them.” I truly believe that the Lord
gave each believer a task to follow before the foundation of the earth, and that
as we read through Scripture, as we listen to sermons, as we spend much time in
prayer then we will know exactly what our part as a believer is to contribute
for the cause of Christ. We are not to
be concerned what others are to do but to do the best we can through the help
of God’s Word, and His Spirit fulfilling what He had planned for us to do while
on this earth.
