SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 8/1/2021 7:53 AM
My Worship Time Focus: PT-2 “Peter’s
Raw Material”
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Matthew
10:2a
Message of the
verse: “The first, Simon, who is
called Peter”
In our SD from yesterday we were talking about things
that Peter did not understand and how he dealt with that. Now today we want to talk about how Peter
showed initiative, and this is another sign or ingredient of leadership. We have learned that Peter is the first one
to ask questions and he was also usually the first to respond to questions that
Jesus would ask. Most of you know the story
found in Matthew 16 where Jesus asked the question “Who do people say that I
am?” Peter was the one who answered that
question first and correctly stating that Jesus was the Christ (Messiah) the
Son of the Living God. MacArthur writes
“When the soldiers came to arrest Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, ‘Peter
therefore having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut
off his right ear’ (John 18:10). Even
though his actions were often misguided, Peter was ready to respond in what he
thought was in Christ’s behalf.”
Third, we see that Peter positioned himself in the middle
of the activity, as he was a natural participant, never content to be on the
sidelines. We have mentioned that Peter
stayed as close to Jesus as possible and Peter wanted to be a part of
everything that happened. Even when
Peter denied the Lord he was there close to him as he could be, whereas the
other disciples were not that close. In
John 20:4 we find that when the disciples were told of Jesus’ resurrection that
Peter was the first one to get to the empty tomb.
Here is a fact that some have a hard time in believing
and that is that Peter was married as we see that his mother-in-law was sick
and we found out that Jesus healed her at that time. Paul speaks of Peter being married found in 1
Cor. 9:5 as he talks about Peter’s wife traveling with him during his apostolic
ministry. We know also that Peter was a
bold fisherman who was a native of Bethsaida but later moved to Capernaum,
where he and his father, John (or Jonas), and brother Andrew had a successful
fishing business.
Sorry for the shortness of this SD but Sunday’s are busy
with me, especially having four of our grandchildren staying with us after
church this morning.
