The Results (Acts 13:50-52)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 3/7/2018 8:46 AM

My Worship Time                                                                                             Focus:  The Results

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                     Reference:  Acts 13:50-52

Message of the verses:  “50 But the Jews incited the devout women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. 51 But they shook off the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.”

When we look at the first word in verse fifty “bur” we know that there is a change coming, a change that is pretty much the opposite of what we have been looking at in our last SD.  We don’t know the timing of this as to how long the change would take place all we know is that there is a change.

The Jews were unable to win the debate with the missionaries and so because they did not like losing they “incited the devout women of the prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of the district.”  We have to say that what the Jews did was very clever as they used to religious and respected women of the city and also used the prominent men to persuade the authorities to get rid of Paul and Barnabas.  Let us look at the last letter that Paul penned, 2 Timothy, and look at 3:11 where he mentions this event:  “11  persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me!”  Paul also writes about some of the persecutions that he went through when he wrote to the Corinthians in 2 Cor. 11:24-25 “24 Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep.”  Perhaps it was one of those time when Paul was beaten with rods that he was referring to Antioch, the passage we are looking at.

In verse fifty-one we see the sad result of the unbelieving Jews as Paul and Barnabas shook off the dust from the feet as they protested them and then left for Iconium.  I want to take a look at Luke 10:10-12, words from our Lord to the seventy that He went out to minister:  “10 “But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ’Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 “I say to you, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.”

John MacArthur writes “The Jews of Paul’s day were scrupulous not to bring Gentile dust back into Israel.  By their act, Paul and Barnabas were saying in effect that they considered the Jews at Antioch no better than pagans.  There could be no stronger condemnation.  Those Jews were left in their obstinate unbelief.”

This was not the case, however with the believers that were left in the city as we read “the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.”  Paul and Barnabas were leaving on an eight mile journey to Iconium, and were leaving behind two different groups.  The hate filled prejudiced Jews and the joyous Spirit-filled believers.  Quite a difference!

People everywhere have the same choices to make and making the right choice like those disciples did is the right choice as that choice will allow the person who makes it to go to heaven to be with the Lord someday.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  One of the things that I have been reminded of is that a true believer in Jesus Christ will want to tell others about how they can be saved too, and this is my desire.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Trust that the Spirit of God will use my Spiritual Diaries to reach people for the Lord.

"The Positive Response" (Acts 13:48-49)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 3/6/2018 11:04 AM

My Worship Time                                                                        Focus:  “The Positive Response”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Acts 13:48-49

Message of the verses:  “48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. 49 And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region.”

We begin today’s SD by looking at the second sub-point under the main point entitled “The Subsequent Response” which covers verses 45-49 of the thirteenth chapter of the book of Acts.

The response that the Gentiles gave to the offer of salvation was directly opposite to the response of the Jews as seen in verse 48.  Jesus spoke a parable to the Pharisees a short time to when He would be crucified which goes along with what happened to the Jews that Paul and Barnabas were speaking to.  The following comes at the end of the parable found in Luke 20:17-18 “17 But Jesus looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: ’THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone’? 18 “Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."”  The Gentiles who wanted to hear about salvation and become believers understood that Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone, the Jews did not.

I have highlighted a portion of verse forty-eight and this is one of the clearest statements in Scripture that speaks of the sovereignty of God.  Luke is saying of these Gentiles that everyone who has been appointed to eternal believed.  We have gone over this in many other Spiritual Diaries stating that in eternity past the Lord chose a bride for His Son, the Lord Jesus came to pay the price for the bride by dying on the cross, and the Holy Spirit give an effectual call to all whom were chosen by God.  We also saw in our earlier SD’s on this section that men do have a choice to turn down the offer of salvation and for that they will be punished.

John MacArthur writes “Appointed’ is from tasso, which is used in some ancient documents in the sense of ‘to inscribe’ or ‘to enroll’ (F. F. Bruce, The book of Acts).

“Scripture affirms that those who go to hell do so because they judge themselves unworthy of eternal life (v. 46).  Conversely, the elect are saved because God appointed them for eternal life (v. 48).  Those truths form a narrow causeway between two chasms.  To emphasize either truth at the expense of the other is to plunge oneself into the abyss of doctrinal error.

“Evangelism always follows true salvation, as those who are saved naturally desire to share their faith.  The converts in Antioch were no exception.  Through their enthusiastic testimony, ‘the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region.’  As always, the agent through which salvation came was ‘the word of the Lord’ (cf. vv. 44, 46, 48).  Antioch was turned upside down not because Paul discoursed on self-esteem, politics, or social issues, but because he proclaimed God’s Word.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today: What I have highlighted at the beginning of the last paragraph from John MacArthur’s commentary is my spiritual meaning for my life today.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  That highlighted section is also my step of faith today as I look forward to talk to people that the Lord brings into my life today about salvation through Jesus Christ.

PT-3 "The Negative Response" (Acts 13:45-47)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 3/5/2018 8:18 AM

My Worship Time                                                              Focus:  PT-3 “The Negative Response”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Acts 13:45-47

Message of the verses:  “45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming. 46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate (renounce) it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 “For so the Lord has commanded us, ’I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU MAY BRING SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.’"”

We have been talking about man’s responsibility and God’s sovereignty in this section, especially from what we read in verse 46, the highlighted section.  As mentioned these Jewish people took it upon themselves to turn down the gift of eternal life.

I promised to end this section with a quote from J. I. Packer, who John MacArthur quoted in his commentary:

“The particular antinomy which concerns us here is the apparent opposition between divine sovereignty and human responsibility, or (putting it more biblically) between what God does as King and what He does as Judge.  Scripture teaches that, as King, He orders and controls all things, human actions among them, in accordance with His own eternal purpose.  Scripture also teaches that, as Judge, He holds every man responsible for the choices he makes and the courses of action he pursues.  Thus, hearers of the gospel are responsible for their reaction; if they reject the good news, they are guilty of unbelief.

“Man without Christ is a guilty sinner, answerable to God for breaking His law.  That is why he needs the gospel.  When he hears the gospel, he is responsible for the decision that he makes about it.  It sets before hi a choice between life and death, the most momentous choice that any man can ever face…When we preach the promises and invitations of the gospel, and offer Christ to sinful men and women, it is part of our task to emphasize and re-emphasize that they are responsible to God for the way in which they react to the good news of His grace. (Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God [Downers Grove, Ill.: InterVarsity, 1978], 22, 25-26).”

As we have mentioned as we have studied this passage that it is Biblical for Paul and Barnabas to talk to the Jewish people first and then if they reject the message of the gospel they turn to the Gentiles.  Many times in the book of Acts we see this happen, and many times it is the Jews who begin the persecution of those who are witnessing to them the truth of the gospel.  Paul ten quotes a well known Messianic passage from Isaiah 49:6 “He says, "It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also make You a light of the nations So that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth."”  The problem is that the Jews did a really poor job in giving the light of the gospel to the Gentiles with of course the exceptions of Paul and those who traveled with Him and the rest of the Apostles.  There has always been a remnant of Jews being saved, and God is not done with the Jewish people as during the tribulation period described in Revelation 6-19 we see once again God’s focus will be on the Jewish people.  This was promised through the prophet Daniel as found in chapter nine and verses 24-27.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It is the duty of every born-again believer to tell the good news of the gospel to people that the Lord brings onto our path.  We cannot save a single soul, but we can give out the message to those God wants us to so that the Holy Spirit can use that witness to call those who God has chosen from eternity past.  Don’t be discouraged, just keep tell people about the saving faith they can have through Jesus Christ.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  I am trusting the Lord for a successful surgery for my 100 year old father-in-law as he broke his hip yesterday and is to have surgery to repair it today.  All prayers will be appreciated for Elmer.

PT-2 "The Negative Response" (Acts 13:45-47)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 3/4/2018 10:08 PM

My Worship Time                                                              Focus:  PT-2 “The Negative Response”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Acts 13:45-47

Message of the verses:  “45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming. 46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 “For so the Lord has commanded us, ’I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU MAY BRING SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.’"”

In our last SD we have been speaking about how it is God’s plan to offer salvation to the Jews first and then to the Gentiles, which is what Paul and Barnabas were doing.  We also talked about the times in the Gospels when this was seen, for instance let’s look at Matthew 10:5-6 “5  These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: "Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; 6  but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

As we continue to look at these verses we see something that is very sad found 46 “"It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.”  What happened to these Jewish people was that they brought the verdict on themselves by their own choice.  It is a shame that after centuries of waiting for the Messiah to come, He came, but they did not recognize Him because of their foolish pride, as they were depending on themselves to get into heaven.  The Jews were actually looking for the Messiah would will come at the end of the tribulation period, one who will at that time usher in the millennial kingdom, but they were not looking for the suffering, gentle Savior who would take care of their sin problem if they would have listened to Him.  John MacArthur writes that “They would pay a fearful price for such nationalistic pride and love of self-righteousness.”  He goes on to write “This passage teaches the important biblical truth of human responsibility.  Like all who go to hell, the unbelieving Jews at Antioch judged themselves unworthy of eternal life by their unbelief.  John 3:18 reads, ‘He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.’  People perish because they choose to reject and refuse to believe, and their choice shuts them out of eternal life.  Jesus once said to the unbelieving Jews, ‘You are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life’ (John 5:40).  Later He said, ‘Unless you believe that I am He, you shall die in your sins (John 8:24).  Damnation is the result of rejection and unbelief, for which each faithless soul is utterly responsible.  That truth of personal volition must be held in tandem with the equally biblical truth that God is absolutely sovereign in salvation and saves whomever He wills to save.  The resulting antinomy (an apparent incompatibility between two undeniable truths) is beyond the ability of our finite minds to resolve.”

In our next SD we will quote a couple of paragraphs written by J. I. Packer who is quoted in John MacArthur’s commentary on this subject.

PT-1 "The Negative Response"

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 3/3/2018 12:39 PM

My Worship Time                                                           Focus:  PT-1 “The Negative Response”

We are into the second main point as we begin this SD, and that is entitled “The Subsequent Response.”  “The negative Response” is the first sub-point from this second main point that we have been looking at which covers verses 13:42-52.  John MacArthur writes the following as he begins this second main point:  “After the initial positive response to Paul’s sermon, the subsequent reaction split along racial lines.  The response of the Jewish people was negative; that of the Gentiles positive.”

I think as we look at this section it reminds me of exactly what happened when Jesus Christ came to planet earth.  Jesus, the God/Man taught the truth in Israel, and yet the Pharisees and Sadducees, along with the Scribes, and Lawyers were jealous and just like in the case of Paul and Barnabas contradicted what the God of heaven was telling them.  There could be one thing different from what happened to Christ and that was that the Gentiles were being saved, and the Jews were jealous of what was happening to the Gentiles.

We know that the Jews hated the Gentiles and so if salvation and the blessing of salvation was coming to the Gentiles this certainly would anger them.  What the Jews did was first of all contradict what Paul and Barnabas were preaching, and next the attacked them.  The same thing is going on in our country at this time.  People cannot just sit down and talk about their political differences they have to attack the people who are giving out the truth.  I saw this demonstrated on a TV news program last night as a man who is a believer was interested getting good music into the schools, and because of his stance on Biblical marriage he was attacked, and this had nothing to do with the position he was offered to help get good music into the schools.

Verse 45 tells us that what the Jews were doing was blaspheming, and that shows how wrong they were.  Not only was it wrong but they were speaking evil of the only One who could save them and that is very sad.

Paul and Barnabas were certainly not intimated as they spoke out boldly in reply to what the Jews were saying.  Paul and Barnabas knew that the Lord wanted them to do what they were doing as seen at the beginning of this chapter and so as the situation grew more tense their courage grew and they stood their ground as they were serving the Lord.  John MacArthur states that now true believer could ever be guilty of such blasphemy and then suggest to look at 1 Cor. 12:3 “Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.”  Unfortunately this was what the Jews were doing and for that matter many are still doing this today.

Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles in different cities that he traveled to had a pattern and that pattern was that if there was a Synagogue in the city he would go there first, “to the Jew’s first and then to the Gentiles.”  In Matthew 15:21-28 we read:  “21 Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed." 23 But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, "Send her away, because she keeps shouting at us." 24 But He answered and said, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." 25 But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, "Lord, help me!" 26 And He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs." 27 But she said, "Yes, Lord; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table." 28 Then Jesus said to her, "O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed at once.”  Even though this woman was a Gentile she had great faith in knowing that Jesus could heal her daughter.

We will pick up looking at these verses in our next SD.

They were Professing (Acts 13:43b)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 3/2/2018 9:19 AM

My Worship Time                                                                            Focus:  They Were Professing

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Acts 13:43b

Message of the verse:  [Paul and Barnabas] “speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God.”

Once again this is the third sub-point under the main point of “The Initial Reaction.”

It is hard to say if some of those people in the audience were really saved, as in some cases in the book of Acts we know for sure that someone has really received Christ, yet others it is hard to know.  At any rate they were told by Paul and Barnabas to continue in the grace of God.  There is a parable that is actually the first parable that Jesus speaks found in Matthew chapter thirteen, and it is the parable of the seeds.  There are different places where the seed is thrown out but only one that bears fruit.  Bearing fruit, also spoken of in John chapter 15 is how one can determine, (as best a human can determine) as to whether or not a person is truly a believer.  In some of the places where the seed had been thrown according to the interpretation that Jesus gave of the parable there was a change in the person, however later on that change did not continue, and so as we look at what is said in 13:43b we cannot tell if salvation occurs and we cannot tell if it is real.  Let us look at 1 John 2:19 to help us better understand if a person is a true believer of a person who demonstrated by the parable was not a true believer:  “19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us.”  John is saying here in this verse that the ones he is writing about were not genuine believers and so they went out from us because they were not of us.  Let us look at another passage that goes along with what we have been looking at:  “31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine (John 8:31).  I mentioned the story of the vine which is found in John 15:1-6 and so we will look at that now.

“1  "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2  "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. 3 “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6 "If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.”

Let us now look at Colossians 1:21-23:

“21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach- 23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.”

John MacArthur writes:  “The key is the phrase ‘if indeed you continue.’  The writer of Hebrews makes the same point:  ‘For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end’ (Heb. 3:14).”

I would like to add one another verse that goes along the lines that we are discussing in this SD: “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you-unless indeed you fail the test?   (2 Cor. 13:5).”

In many churches today the gospel is not really presented in a Biblical way and therefore this can give a false promise to those who think that they are really saved and on their way to heaven.  There are many churches that teach that you can lose your salvation which is impossible if you are truly saved.  In our verse from 1John 2:19 John is speaking of those that were not believers who went out from that church.  If someone has a problem with whether or not they are saved they need to seek out a church that truly presents the gospel and then take the time to talk to the pastor of that church, but as mentioned make sure that you find a good Bible believing church that preaches the gospel on a weekly basis, and by that I mean that even though the sermon may not be about salvation, salvation is mentioned at the end of the sermon so that if the Spirit of God is working in the hearts of anyone then they will hear the true gospel.

We have one more short sub-point to look at this morning:  “They were Present” and this takes a look at Acts 13:44 “And the next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the Word of God.”

John MacArthur writes the following:  “The interest shown by Paul’s listeners was somewhat sustained.  They were not like many who profess only momentary interest in the gospel.  On ‘the next Sabbath’ they were back, anxiously awaiting the message Paul had for them.  And because of their contagious enthusiasm, ‘nearly the whole city assembled to hear the Word of God’ proclaimed by Paul and Barnabas.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I remember when the Lord saved me and as I look back on when I was saved I realize that the one thing that caused me to understand that there was truly something different in my life was not using some four letter words that I used far to often, and tried to stop but could not.  However when the Lord saved me those words were taken away from me and I have not used them since.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  I trust that as I go over my Sunday school lesson for this up-coming Sunday that the Spirit of God will cause me to understand what I am going to teach and it will be used to bring glory to my Lord.

They Were Persistent (Acts 13:43a)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 3/1/2018 9:30 AM

My Worship Time                                                                              Focus:  They Were Persistent

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Acts 13:43a

Message of the verses:  “43 Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas.”

First of all I want to apologize because of the shortness of this SD as we have had a couple of grand-children to take care of over the past couple of days and therefore my time for doing my Spiritual Diaries has been shortened.  What we are looking at this morning is the second sub-point from the first major main point entitled “The Initial Reaction.”

In our last SD we wrote about the importance of accepting Christ when the message is first heard “today is the day of salvation.”  We also mentioned that some of the people wanted to wait until the next Sabbath to hear more from Paul and Barnabas, and yet in or verse for today we see that “many of the Jews and the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas.”  Proselytes are Gentiles who have desired to belong to the Jewish faith.  I also want to say that in order for them to become members of the Jewish faith they had to go through a baptism.

I have to say that I believe that the Spirit of God had a wonderful affect on the hearts and minds of these Jews and proselytes as they seemed to be following Paul and Barnabas around the streets of Pisidian Antioch in order to get more information about Jesus Christ.  I can understand them perfectly as once I became a believer I was looking for materials to help me understand what in the world was going on with me.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It was little over 44 years ago that I was looking for material to understand more about Jesus Christ and I have to say that I am still doing this very same thing as I take time to study His Word and desire to grow up in Christ each day.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Even though things are a bit hectic around the house this morning I still desire to take the time to do my Spiritual Diaries.
