PT-1 "The Attack" (Matt. 22:15-17)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 8/11/2023 8:42 AM

My Worship Time                                                                                  Focus:  PT-1 “The Attack”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                              Reference:  Matthew 22:15-17

Message of the verses:  15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Him in what He said. 16 And they sent their disciples to Him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any. 17 “Tell us then, what do You think? Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?’”

Anyone who has studied the gospels at all can come to realize that the arch enemies of our Lord while He was on earth was the Pharisees, and as they listened to Jesus’ powerfully intimidating parables, they now went and plotted together how they might trap Him in what He said.  It while Jesus continued to teach the crowds in the Court of the Gentiles that the Pharisees gathered privately in another part of the Temple to plan their next step in trying to trap our Lord so that they might put Him to death.  They were trying to trap Him into saying something against Rome, as they wanted Him to say something against Rome in order that the Romans would do their dirty work in putting Jesus to death.  MacArthur writes “The wanted to ‘catch Him in some statement, so as to deliver Him up to the rule and the authority of the governor’ (Luke 20:20), who at that time was Pilate.  That way they would have Him out of the way without getting their own hands sullied or arousing the anger of the people.”

It could be that because of the clothing that they wore as Pharisees, and because many of them knew the Lord from confronting Him earlier that they decided to send their disciples to Him.  We can see that what their disciples said to Him, and what they said to Him was flattery, something that the Pharisees would not say to Him because of all the evil things that they had already said to Him that they did not really want to be around Him, knowing that Jesus would have saw through it.  However they still did not realize that they were dealing with the all knowing Son of God.  What these disciples of the Pharisees were trying to do was trick Jesus into saying something that would incriminate Him in the eyes of the Roman government as earlier stated.

I have to say at this time that this SD will be shorter than most of the ones that I write, and the reason for this is that today my wife and I are celebrating fifty years of marriage and because our family is throwing us a party, and also have given us assignments for this party that I will cut this short.  Tomorrow I desire to begin to talk about the Herodians, something that I found are very interesting and hope that all who read this SD will find interesting too.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Stay away from those who are flatters.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Trust the Lord as we celebrate our 50th anniversary today that all that is done at the party will bring glory to the Lord Jesus Christ whom we serve.
