PT-1 “The Power of God is Wondrous” (Luke 1:64-65)

MORNING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 3/17/2026 9:25 AM

My Worship Time                                                 Focus: PT-1 “The Power of God is Wondrous”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                                Reference:  “Luke 1:64-65

Message of the verses:  “And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God.  Fear came on all those living around them; and all these matters were being talked about in all the hill country of Judea.  All who heard them kept them in mind, saying, “What then will this child turn out to be?”  For the hand of the Lord was certainly with him.”

We pick up this miraculous story in this morning’s SD by reading about as soon as Zacharias had written that his son’s name was John that his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God.  Zacharias had been unable to speak of hear for nine months and the only way he had to communicate was by writing after reading what someone else wrote to him.  I realize that it was because of Zachariah’s lack of faith that caused him not to be able to speak, as he did not believe Gabriel when he told him that he and his wife were going to have a baby boy, and was to name him John.  However as I think about this in light of how he was now able to speak it certainly added drama to the story.

John MacArthur writes “From the beginning to end, the Bible extols God’s power.  Genesis records His creation of the universe out of nothing (Gen. 1-2; cf .Jer. 10:12; 27:5; 32:17; 51:15; Rev. 4:11), and Revelation declares that God will destroy the present universe and create a new heaven and a new earth (Rev. 21-22; cf. 2 Peter 3:7-12).”  I want to look at 2 Peter 3:7-12 at this time and comment on those verses.

(2 Peter 3:7-12)

New American Standard Bible

But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people. But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance.

A New Heaven and Earth

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and [a]its works will be [b]discovered.11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!

The word in the Greek for elements is the word “stoicheion” (n).  Stoicheion in the Greek means “basic building block.”  The basic building block of the universe is the atom.  Now in order to explain about that atom one would have to look at how a magnet works.  Magnets have north and south sides and if you but the north side of one magnet toward the south side of another magnet they will come together, however the atom that is being talked about with this word has two north sides coming together, and it is the Lord who holds them together.  Now when God destroys the universe, which will happen at the end of the Millennium period He will simply take away the power to hold the atoms together and then the entire universe will be burned up and the explosion will be like a gigantic Atom bomb.

MacArthur goes on to write “God, in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, ‘upholds all things by the word of His power’ (Heb. 1:3).  Psalm 62:11declares that ‘power belongs to God,’ one of whose names is El Shaddai—God Almighty (cf. Gen. 17:1; 28:3; 35:11; Ex. 6:3; Ezek. 10:5).  God’s power is limitless (Num 11:23); therefore ‘with God all things are possible’ (Matt. 19:26) and ‘nothing will be impossible with God’ (Luke 1:37); cf. Gen. 18:14).  His power is great (Ex. 14:31; Nah. 1:3), majestic (Ex. 15:6), exalted (Job 37:23), and mighty (Isa 8:11).”

I will conclude this SD by quoting the verses which are above in the highlighted portion, which comes from the last paragraph we looked at.

(Num 11:23)

“23  And the LORD said to Moses, "Is the LORD’s hand shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not.”

(Matt. 19:26)

“26  But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”

(Luke 1:37)

“37  For nothing will be impossible with God.’”

Gen. 18:14)

“14  Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.’”

(Ex. 14:31; Nah. 1:3)

“31  Israel saw the great power that the LORD used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the LORD, and they believed in the LORD and in his servant Moses.”

“3  The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.”

(Ex. 15:6)

“6  Your right hand, O LORD, glorious in power, your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy.”

(Job 37:23)

“23  The Almighty— we cannot find him; he is great in power; justice and abundant righteousness he will not violate.”

(Isa 8:11)

“11  For the LORD spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying”

Spiritual Meaning for my life today:  I can see in this section that the Lord is in charge of all things, even the complete destruction of the present universe, and so that gives me a great desire to trust Him with things going on in my life at this time.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Continue to trust the Lord for everything that is going on in the lives of my wife and myself.
