PT-1 Intro to “The Character of a True Christian” (Luke 6:20-26)

EVENING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 7/13/2026 8:01 PM

My Worship Time                                Focus:  PT-1 Intro to “The Character of a True Christian”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                                  Reference: Luke 6:20-26

Message of the verses:  20 And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, “Blessed are [a]you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are [b]you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. 22 Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man. 23 Be glad in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers used to [c]treat the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in full. 25 Woe to you who [d]are well-fed now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to [e]treat the false prophets in the same way.”

John MacArthur writes:  “In his recounting of the magnificent story of the life and ministry of  the Lord Jesus Christ, Luke amasses irrefutable evidence that He is the Messiah, God in human flesh, the Savior of the world.  Of the many proofs Luke has presented so far (see the list in the previous chapter of this volume), none is more compelling than Christ’s teaching.  He was the most truthful, wise, and powerful preacher ever and His teaching consequently drew massive crowds who were amazed and astonished by what they heard (cf. Matt. 7:28; John 7:31-32, 45-46).”

(cf. Matt. 7:28; John 7:31-32, 45-46)

“28  And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching,”

“31  Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?” 32  The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.”

“45 ¶  The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46  The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!’”

“Jesus spoke the truth with absolute divine authority on a wide spectrum of doctrinal and practical topics.  He that God is creator (Matt. 19:4; Mark 10:6; 13:9), king (Matt. 5:35), father (Matt. 5:16; 23:9), and sovereign ruler of heaven and earth “Matt. 11:25; cf. 6:9-10).  He is holy (John 17:11), merciful (Luke 6:36), gracious Ps. 103:8, even to unbelievers [Matt. 5:45]), perfectly righteous (Matt. 5:48; John 17:25), omniscient (Matt. 6:8), and loving (John  14:21, 23; 16:27).”  Now I want to quote all of these verses in the order that they are seen in this paragraph.

God is creator (Matt. 19:4; Mark 10:6; 13:9)

“4  He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female,”

“6  But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’’

“9  "But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them.”

king (Matt. 5:35)

“35  or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.”

father (Matt. 5:16; 23:9)

“16  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.’

“9  And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.”

sovereign ruler of heaven and earth “Matt. 11:25; cf. 6:9-10)

25 ¶  At that time Jesus declared, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children;”

“9 ¶  Pray then like this: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10  Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

He is holy (John 17:11)

“11 ¶  And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.”

merciful (Luke 6:36)

“36  Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”

gracious Ps. 103:8, even to unbelievers [Matt. 5:45])

“8  The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”

“45  so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

perfectly righteous (Matt. 5:48; John 17:25)

“48  You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

“25  O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me.”

and loving (John  14:21, 23; 16:27)

“21  Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.’’

“23  Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”

“27  for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.”

It looks like this is going to be another long introduction, as I really want to quote the verses so it brings deeper meaning to what MacArthur is writing.
