Son of David Lord of All (Mark 12:35-37)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 11/8/2012 11:35:19 AM

My Worship Time                                                   Focus:  Son of David Lord of All

Bible Reading & Meditation                                             Reference:  Mark 12:35-37

Message of the verses:  I want to include some of the verses from Matthew’s account along with the verses from Mark’s account in order to better set the stage for what Jesus is saying.

“41 ¶  Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: 42  "What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?" They *said to Him, "The son of David." 43  He *said to them, "Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ’Lord,’ saying, 44  ’THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET"’? 45  "If David then calls Him ’Lord,’ how is He his son?" 46  No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question.”  (Matthew 22:41-46)

“35 ¶  And Jesus began to say, as He taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36  "David himself said in the Holy Spirit, ’THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET."’ 37  "David himself calls Him ’Lord’; so in what sense is He his son?" And the large crowd enjoyed listening to Him.”  (Mark 12:35-37)

The question that Jesus asks the Pharisees was different than the questions that the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Scribes asked Him, in that their questions for Him was to trick Him, but Jesus’ question to them was to give one last witness to them.  It was because of their blindness that they asked Jesus their questions and it was also because of their blindness that they did not know all of the answer to the question that Jesus asked them.

Jesus will quote from Psalm 110:1 while speaking to the Pharisees, as psalm this is quoted more times than any other psalm in the New Testament.  Psalm 110 is a Messianic Psalm, something all of the Scribes and the Pharisees believed.  The problem with the Scribes and the Pharisees was that they had a wrong view of who the Messiah was.  Yes they believed that He would be the Son of David, but they did not believe that He was the Son of God, and it is with this in mind that Jesus was teaching them that the Messiah was indeed the Son of God, and they were speaking and listening to Him at this time.

Jesus asks them the most important question anyone can ask, “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?”  (Matthew 22:42)  I looked up “Son of David” to see how many times that that phrase is used in the New Testament and found out that it is used sixteen times in the NASB translation.  I then just searched for the word “David” and found it 55 times in the New Testament, and of course this would also include the 16 times found in the other search, so this added 39 different times in the New Testament.  This is important because the “Son of David” is a messianic title, but the Pharisees could not answer why it was that David under the influence of the Holy Spirit why David’s Son was David’s Lord.  The only way that David’s Son could be David’s Lord is if He were the Messiah, and if the Messiah were the Son of God.  The answer to this question is of course, is that Jesus’ birth was a miraculous birth conceived of the virgin Mary as spoke of in Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-25; and Luke 1:26-38.  When we look at the genealogy of Jesus in the book of Matthew we see the genealogy of Joseph, the step father of Jesus, and it goes from Abraham to the birth of Jesus.  In the book of Luke we see another genealogy, and it is believed that it is that of Mary, and most scholars believe that her genealogy is through Nathan, another son of David, while Matthews is through Solomon.  There is a reason as to why this is so and it has to do with a great sin in the line of David’s descendants through Solomon.  Luke’s genealogy goes from Jesus all the way back to Adam.

The problem with the scribes and the Pharisees was a problem that they had for a long time and that is that their understanding of the Scriptures was wrong in a lot of cases, and Jesus was teaching them the error of their ways by quoting this verse from Psalm 110.

There is plenty of evidence that Jesus was truly the Son of God and also the Son of David found in both the Old and New Testaments but first I want to add a quote from John MacArthur’s message on this section:  David, who wrote the Psalm, is saying that God Himself, the Yahweh of Israel, creator of the universe, God a very God, the one true God has designated a position for Messiah...listen...at His own right hand. Sit at My right hand. God gives to Messiah the place at His right hand. God identifies the Messiah as Lord, taking a place at the right hand of God makes Him co-equal in rank and coequal in authority and virtually declares His deity. Literally, present imperative, “Take Your permanent seat.” Yahweh’s right hand is His power. There’s not actually a chair there, it is a way of saying He is in the place of divine power.

“Many Old Testament passages assign the power of God to the right hand of God. To be placed permanently at the right hand of God is to be placed in the position of power and authority to the max.  That is why Philippians 2 says that He was exalted, given a name above every name and that is the name Lord. And at that name, everyone is to bow. That is why in Ephesians 1 it says He is the Lord over all things, over all things who has then been given to the church as the church’s head.”

MacArthur goes on to say, “The deity of Christ then is the issue here. And the Lord goes to a Psalm that they all confess was a messianic Psalm and shows them by that very Psalm where David points to the one who would reign that not only will He be a man who reigns and rules, but He will rise to the very right-hand of God and be an expression Himself of the divine nature. Certainly the New Testament overflows, doesn’t it?, with evidences of the fact that He was God. He shared with God the mutual attributes of omnipotence. He claimed to be the creator, the commander of the elements, the commander of all creatures, the provider of food, the healer, the raiser of the dead, the forgiver of sin and the judge of all. He had the attributes of omnipresence, thus was able to be everywhere at all times. He was omniscient, He knew everything, even what was going on in the minds of men. He was holy, true, wise, sovereign, loving, eternal, glorious. He possessed all the attributes of God, put them all on display. He accepted worship. In fact, He demanded worship. He was to be sought in prayer, as the source of answered prayer and the one who opened the resources of God to pour out blessing on His people. Everything He said was to be believed as the truth of God. And He was to be believed on for

salvation.”

Now back to some evidence that Jesus is truly the Son of God, and the first evidence we can see is that He has all the attributes of God the Father and the Holy Spirit.  We can see that in the fact that Jesus is all knowing, that Jesus is Holy and lived a perfect holy life.  We see that Jesus did miracles to people by actually creating new eyes, joints, and other body parts through His miracles.  We know that Jesus had perfect control over nature, by calming the seas, and storms, and even walking on the water.  He had absolute power over demons.  We also see that He arose from the dead, something only God could do.  He then ascended into heaven and is at the right hand of God.  “55  But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; 56  and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’”  (Acts 7:55-56)  This is Steven speaking as he was being stoned for the cause of Christ.

I want to look at the last verse from Matthew’s section to conclude this SD.  46  No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question.”  That was all the questions that they had for Jesus and all the answers He would give them.  This is a sad commentary for those who had listened to Jesus, for even though Mark states that the large crowd enjoy listening to Him, they missed the truth of who He is.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I don’t want to be like the people who heard Jesus and miss what He has to say to me through His Word, and through the power of the Holy Spirit who teaches me from His Word, so I want to keep a short list with the Lord so that I can enjoy fellowship with Him.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Continue to learn contentment and continue to be transformed through the Word of God in order to have my mind renewed.

Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 130:1-3

1 Out of the debts I cried to You, O LORD.  2 Lord, hear my voice!  Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.  3 If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?
