Sexual Sin Is Eventually Disappointing (Prov. 5:15-23)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 1/12/2013 5:57 AM
My Worship Time                                         Focus: Sexual Sin Is Eventually Disappointing PT-2
Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Proverbs 5:15-23
Message of the verses:  We will continue to look at the fifth chapter of the book of Proverbs in today’s Spiritual Diary.
The experience goes from purity to pollution (vv. 15-20):  “15 ¶  Drink water from your own cistern And fresh water from your own well. 16  Should your springs be dispersed abroad, Streams of water in the streets? 17  Let them be yours alone And not for strangers with you. 18  Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice in the wife of your youth. 19  As a loving hind and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; Be exhilarated always with her love. 20  For why should you, my son, be exhilarated with an adulteress And embrace the bosom of a foreigner?”
Solomon gives advice to his sons concerning marriage in this section.  He compares a good marriage to a sweet stream of water, but speaks of those who desire to have sexual relationships outside of marriage as waters that are like sewers.  Drinking water from your own well is a picture of being faithful to your wife.  As marriage begins and you continue to love each other and love the Lord the waters will grow deeper and it is hard to stir up deep water, but easy to stir up shallow water.  I live near Lake Erie and it is a shallow lake so storms can come up on it very fast because of the shallowness of it.  I have heard stories from people who have been out on the lake on a sunny day and then they turn around as see a storm coming which causes the waves to become high is a very short time.  This pictures a marriage where the husband and the wife are not committed to each other and to the Lord and so when trouble come they can be more difficult because of the shallowness of their relationship.
In verses 19 &20 we see the word “exhilarated” which describes the way that a husband should be about his wife, the word is similar to being intoxicated with strong drink.  With that said Dr Wiersbe writes “The adulterer watches the river turn into a sewer, but the faithful husband sees the water become wine!  I think it’s significant that Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding feast, as though He were giving us an object lesson concerning the growing delights of marriage (John 2:1-11).”
Their experience goes from freedom to bondage (vv. 21-23):  “21  For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the LORD, And He watches all his paths. 22  His own iniquities will capture the wicked, And he will be held with the cords of his sin. 23  He will die for lack of instruction, And in the greatness of his folly he will go astray.”
We see the phrase “the eyes of the LORD” many times in the Scriptures and in our Wednesday evening prayer service our Pastor brought this phrase up and we looked at some of the different times that it is found in the Scriptures and found out that this is speaking of the omnipresence of the Lord, the fact that the Lord is everywhere and so we are in the presence of the Lord at all times, or we could also say that the Lord is in our presence at all times.  Sometimes, or perhaps many times we do not act as if we are in His presence and from the looks of this section of three short verses the person who is being talked about does not realize that he is in the presence of the Lord.
When we look back at the first sin by a human being we see that one of the reasons for Adam and Eve sin was to become free, but instead they put themselves into bondage, for sin puts cords onto us and the more we sin the shorter the cords become.  Let’s look at a few verses that speak to this.  John 8:34, “Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.”  Romans 6:16, “Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?”  Proverbs 5:22 “An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him (NLT).”
Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Solomon gave very wise advice and counsel to his sons, advice that we all can take and put into practice.  I continue remembering the words of the old Scottish Pastor that Dr. Wiersbe refers to in many of his books who said “The successful Christian life is a series of new beginnings.”  When we fall we have to dust ourselves off and get back in the saddle to continue to ride onto the path of wisdom.
My Steps of Faith for Today:  Trust in the Lord with all of my heart and lean not upon my own understanding, in all of my ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct my path.  Continue to learn contentment; continue to hide the Word of God in my heart so that my mind can be transformed.
Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 121:1-4
1 I will lift up my eyes to the mountains, for where shall my help come?  2 My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.  3 He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.  4 Behold He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
Words of Wisdom from Turning Point:  “The Bible is bread for daily use, not cake for special occasions.”  (Author Unknown)  “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  (2Timothy 3:16-17)
