Wisdom Perfects our Path PT-2 (Pr. 4:10-19)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 1/9/2013 2:36 PM

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  Wisdom Perfects our Path PT-2

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Proverbs 4:10-19

Message of the verses:  We will continue to look at the fourth chapter of Proverbs in today’s Spiritual Diary remembering the words that Dr. Wiersbe wrote at the end of his introductory commentary on this fourth chapter of Proverbs:  “Our path may not be an easy one, but it will always be a fulfilling one as we walk in the will of the Father.  This involves three responsibilities on our part:  knowing God’s Word (Proverbs 4:1-9), trusting God’s providence (vv. 10-19), and obeying God’s will (vv. 20-27).”  We looked at Knowing God’s Word in yesterday’s SD.

Trusting God’s providence (vv. 10-19):  “10  Hear, my son, and accept my sayings And the years of your life will be many. 11  I have directed you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in upright paths. 12  When you walk, your steps will not be impeded; And if you run, you will not stumble. 13  Take hold of instruction; do not let go. Guard her, for she is your life.  14 Do not enter the path of the wicked And do not proceed in the way of evil men. 15  Avoid it, do not pass by it; Turn away from it and pass on. 16  For they cannot sleep unless they do evil; And they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone stumble. 17  For they eat the bread of wickedness And drink the wine of violence. 18  But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, That shines brighter and brighter until the full day. 19  The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know over what they stumble.”

In verse ten Solomon tells his son that if he accepts his saying that is the sayings of wisdom that he has been telling him about that his life will be long.  Now we have talked about this before stating that this is not a promise for there have been many godly people following the ways of wisdom that have not lived long lives, but the life that they lived was full.  The point here is that we are to follow the ways of wisdom that are seen in portions of the book of Proverbs and other parts of the Scripture in order to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord.  Augustine said “Trust the past to the mercy of God, the present to His love, and the future to His providence.”  We have to be willing to do God’s will as Jesus says in John 7:17, “"If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.”  Jesus was in a discussion with the Jews when He spoke these words.  However we are not to treat the will of God for our life like going through a buffet line picking out just the things that we want to do and leaving the rest behind, for this will not please the Lord and therefore He will not direct our path like Proverbs 3:5-6 says.

In verses 14-17 we see that we are not to shuttle back and forth from the path of wisdom to the path of the wicked, we are to stay on the path of the wise so that God will direct your path, again like Proverbs 3:5-6 states.  Dr. Wiersbe writes “God doesn’t guide His children when they’re walking in darkness.  When you’re re living in the will of God, the path gets brighter and brighter not darken and darker (1John 1:5-10).”  5 ¶  This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6  If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7  but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

“ 8 ¶  If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10  If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I desire to continue to walk in the light as He Himself is in the light.  I desire to continue to find wisdom from the Word of God, continue to memorize portions of Scripture so that my life will be transformed from the inside out to be more like my Lord. (Romans 8:29 and Romans 12:2).

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Continue to seek the Lord to teach me contentment.

Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 121:1-4

1 I will lift up my eyes to the mountains, from where shall my help come?  2 My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.  3 He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.  4 He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

Words of Wisdom from Turning Point:  “O LORD, let s not live to be useless, For Christ’s sake.”  (John Wesley)  “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”  (Matthew 28:19)
