My Worship Time Focus: Sexual Sin
Is Gradually Destructive PT-2
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Proverbs 6:25-33
Message of the
verses: In today’s SD we will
continue to look at the sub-points under this second main point from Dr.
Wiersbe’s commentary on Proverbs. In
yesterday’s SD we looked at the first sub-point which covered verses 20-24 of
Proverbs 6. We will look at the first 23
verses of Proverbs 6 at a later date as they are not written about sexual sins.
They lose wealth
(vv. 25-26): “25 Do not desire her beauty in your heart, Nor
let her capture you with her eyelids. 26
For on account of a harlot one is reduced to a loaf of bread, And an
adulteress hunts for the precious life.”
We have already looked at Proverbs 5:7-14 in an earlier
SD, and the reason that I bring this up is because these two verses in Proverbs
six parallel those verses. The point in
these two verses is that a person who commits adultery can be reduced to just
having bread to eat and this is the lowest end of poverty. In our Lord’s parable from Luke 15 we read
the following, “13 "And not many
days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey
into a distant country, and there he squandered his estate with loose living.
14 "Now when he had spent
everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to be
impoverished. 15 "So he went and
hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into
his fields to feed swine. 16 "And
he would have gladly filled his stomach with the pods that the swine were
eating, and no one was giving anything to him.
30 but when this son of yours came, who has devoured
your wealth with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’”
In today’s culture a person who continues in this
adulteress life style can lose all of his wealth through divorce, and can even
lose his life through Aids, so to follow the lessons of Wisdom found in the
Scriptures is the best thing to do.
They lose enjoyment
(vv. 27-31): “27 Can a man take fire in his bosom And his
clothes not be burned? 28 Or can a man
walk on hot coals And his feet not be scorched? 29 So is the one who goes in to his neighbor’s
wife; Whoever touches her will not go unpunished. 30 Men do not despise a thief if he steals To
satisfy himself when he is hungry; 31
But when he is found, he must repay sevenfold; He must give all the
substance of his house.”
I am not too sure, or at least did not understand verses
30-31 in their meaning along with some verses in 1Cornithians that Dr. Wiersbe
brings up. I will do my best to explain
what I have learned from these verses. “Food
is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both
of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is
for the body.” This is 1Cor. 6:13 and
what Paul is stating here is that the sexual experience that God has put in us
is not for us to enjoy it with anyone.
Paul is stating that sex in the right way is how God planned it from the
beginning, and Solomon is saying the same thing for as we look at fire we can
say that when it is out of control it can cause much destruction, but when it
is used to cook our food, to keep our houses warm, to turn turbines in order to
get electric power then it is a good thing.
I think that this is a good time to talk about a sermon
that I heard some ten plus years ago by Dr. Tony Evans in which he was talking
about marriage and how we are to wait to have sex until after we are
married. He brought up the different
covenants that God had made with people like Abraham that is explained in
Genesis chapter fifteen, and the New Covenant that was made by our Lord Jesus
Christ. These covenants all had blood
involved in them and he brought up the fact that the marriage covenant also has
blood involved in it. There are people
in our world today that say that this world, this universe is just some kind of
an accident and that we all evolved from a one cell animal. When I think about how God made us and how
God made women to make sure that when they marry that it can be proved that
they did not have any sexual experience before marriage then it make me think
that those people who believe we evolved are certainly wrong. God has made the sexual experience for
marriage and has showed us in His Word that this is a good thing, and not a bad
thing like some of the Corinthians had thought and some still think today.
They lose their
good sense (v.32): “32 The one who commits adultery with a woman is
lacking sense; He who would destroy himself does it.” “He who takes another
man’s wife is without all sense: he who does it is the cause of destruction to
his soul.” (Bible in Basic English)
There is a great example of the fulfillment of this verse
in the Scriptures, and the ironic thing about it is that the one who is the
example is the father of Solomon, and if David had not committed adultery with
Bathsheba then Solomon would not have been born. David knew better than to commit adultery
with her, but it all happened so fast that it was probably over before he knew
it. In a sermon that I listened to by
John MacArthur he stated that when the devil tempts us it happens fast and so
we always have to be on guard for these temptations. That is exactly what happened to David for he
was just sitting on the roof of his palace and just happened to look onto
another roof where he saw Bathsheba bathing and before he could even think about
running like Joseph did he fell into the trap of losing his senses and when all
was said and done David would lose four sons and this would be something that
would destroy part of David in the process.
They lose their
peace (vv. 33-35): 33 Wounds and disgrace he will find, And his
reproach will not be blotted out. 34 For
jealousy enrages a man, And he will not spare in the day of vengeance. 35 He will not accept any ransom, Nor will he be
satisfied though you give many gifts.”
In the case of King David and his adultery with Bathsheba
her husband was a righteous man who served the Lord and the king with all of
his strength, and even carried the note to his commander that caused his death
that was written by David. However most
husbands will not be like that as Solomon writes about in these verses for most
husbands will want revenge. I can speak
from experience for before I became a believer in Christ Jesus I was married
and had this experience happen to me. I
can tell you that murder was certainly on my mind along with other things, but
after the Lord saved me in 1974 I even desired to witness to her and her new
husband, something only God could have done.
Dr. Wiersbe writes in conclusion the following: “In today’s society, if a person has enough
money and ‘clout’ he or she might be able to survive an adulterous scandal, but
life is still never quite the same.
Whether in this life or the next, sinners can be sure that their sins
will find them out. Indulging in sexual
sin is always a losing proposition.”
There is a greater problem in our society today and Paul explains it in
the first chapter of the letter to the Romans when he writes, “and although
they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy
of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.” (Rom. 1:32)
Spiritual meaning
for my life today: There is hope for
those who have fallen into situations that are mentioned in this section and
that hope is in the Lord Jesus Christ who offers forgiveness to all who come to
Him in repentance and faith to receive His forgiveness, David knew this for he
wrote the following in Psalm 51, which is a psalm he wrote after his adultery
with Bathsheba: “Against You, You only,
I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified
when You speak And blameless when You judge.” (v-4) “Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”
(v-7) “Restore to me the joy of
Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit.” (v-12)
My Steps of Faith for Today: I desire to continue to learn contentment,
for there is something that is going on in my life today that is causing me to
lose my contentment and I surely do not want to fail this test.
