My Worship Time Focus:
The
Scorner or Scoffer
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Various
Verses
Message of the
verses: We are going to look at what
the Bible entitles “Scorners” or Scoffers” which are found in the book of Proverbs. In looking for these types of people I
noticed that in the KJV the word scorner or sconrers is used while in the NASB
the word scoffer or scoffers is found.
Dr. Wiersbe writes in his explanation of scorners “Scorners
think they know everything, and anybody who tries to teach them is only wasting
time.” Here is how I want to do this SD,
for it will be a bit different than most others I have done. I am going to copy and paste the verses from
the NASB which uses the word “Scorner” that I have found and then tell a little
story of people who fit into this mold from a sermon that I listened to this
morning on a completely different topic.
Pr 9:7 He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for
himself, And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself.
Pr 9:8 Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate
you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you.
Pr 13:1 A wise son accepts his father’s discipline,
But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
Pr 14:6 A scoffer seeks wisdom and finds none, But
knowledge is easy to one who has understanding.
Pr 15:12 A scoffer does not love one who reproves him,
He will not go to the wise.
Pr 19:25 Strike a scoffer and the naive may become
shrewd, But reprove one who has understanding and he will gain knowledge.
Pr 21:11 When the scoffer is punished, the naive
becomes wise; But when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.
Pr 21:24 "Proud," "Haughty,"
"Scoffer," are his names, Who acts with insolent pride.
Pr 22:10 Drive out the scoffer, and contention will go
out, Even strife and dishonor will cease.
Pr 24:9 The devising of folly is sin, And the scoffer
is an abomination to men.
Pr 1:22 "How long, O naive ones, will you love
being simple-minded? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing And fools hate
knowledge?
Pr 3:34 Though He scoffs at the scoffers, Yet He
gives grace to the afflicted.
Pr 19:29 Judgments are prepared for scoffers, And
blows for the back of fools.
When we look at the trial of Jesus Christ we see that
there were many men involved who could be said to be scoffers, for as we look
at the meaning showing that a scoffer is a person who know everything or thinks
he does and the men who were responsible for the death of Jesus Christ, at
least in a human way could be seen as scoffers.
Jesus had six trials in a matter of hours before being crucified at 9:00
AM and then dying at 3:00PM which was the very time the Passover Lambs were
killed. His first trial was kind of what
we would call a Grand Jury investigation where the Grand Jury will see if there
is enough evidence to go to trial. This
was done in front of Annas who had been High Priest for many years, but the
Romans put a stop to him having this position and so he made his son High
Priest for a while and then his son-in-law became the High Priest which is
where they took Jesus next. Caiaphas is
the son-in-law of Annas who is now the High Priest. These two trials were done at night which was
illegal, but they were not trials in the true sense of the word for they were
just a way to make sure that Jesus would be killed. Later in the morning they would have Jesus go
before Caiaphas again in order to make things seem a bit more legal. Next Jesus would go before Pilate for the
first time and for the fourth of the trials of Jesus. Pilate would send him to Herod who would then
send him back to Pilate who would then pronounce Jesus to be crucified.
My point in telling this story is to say that during
these six trials of Jesus they were done in front of people who wanted him to
be killed with the exception of Pilate.
In speaking of the Jewish leadership they all knew in their minds and
would not have their minds changed that Jesus was guilty. As you look at the crucifixion you can see
the same thing with the people who were around Jesus beating him and also
talking badly about Him. It was prophesied
that this would happen and it did.
Needless to say there were some of His followers that were there who were
not scoffers and there was even one scoffer who was crucified right beside him
who accepted His forgiveness and is now in heaven.
Spiritual meaning
for my life today: I mentioned
yesterday that Solomon in speaking of being wise is speaking of a person coming
to know the Lord as their Savior and the ones who are wicked, simple, scorners,
and fools are those who do not want to accept the Lord as their Savior. However we also mentioned that a believer can
still have some of the tendencies of all of these kinds of people and as
believers we who are wise can see the error or our ways as we study the
Scriptures and then by the power of the Word and the Spirit can change. I suppose that being a know it all is one
thing that I surely practiced before becoming a believer and am still in the
process of not following the way of the scoffer and so it is good to learn
about this so that the things that I learn can transform my mind as Romans 12:2
speaks of.
My Steps of Faith for Today: “And do not be conformed to this world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the
will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Memory verses for the
week: Psalm 121:1-8
1 I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; from where
shall my help come? 2 My help comes from
the LORD, who made heaven and earth. 3
He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, He who keeps you will neither
slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD is your
keeper; The LORD is your shade on your right hand. 6 The sun will not smite you by day nor the
moon by night. 7 The LORD will protect
you from evil; He will keep your soul. 8
The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and
forever.
Turning Points Wisdom for
Today: “Worry is an old man with bended
head, carrying a load of feathers which he things are lead.” (Corrie Ten Boom) “Do not worry, saying, ‘what shall we eat?’
or ‘what shall we wear?’…For your Heavenly Father knows that you need all these
things.” (Matthew 6:31-32)
