The Circumstances before Us (The Greatness of our God) (Isaiah 40:12-26)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 10/16/2013 9:58 AM

My Worship Time                                                                 Focus:  The Circumstances before Us

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Isaiah 40:12-26

Message of the verses:  “12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, And marked off the heavens by the span, And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure, And weighed the mountains in a balance And the hills in a pair of scales? 13 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, Or as His counselor has informed Him? 14 With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding? And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge And informed Him of the way of understanding? 15 Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, And are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales; Behold, He lifts up the islands like fine dust. 16 Even Lebanon is not enough to burn, Nor its beasts enough for a burnt offering. 17 All the nations are as nothing before Him, They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless.

“18 To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare with Him? 19 As for the idol, a craftsman casts it, A goldsmith plates it with gold, And a silversmith fashions chains of silver. 20 He who is too impoverished for such an offering Selects a tree that does not rot; He seeks out for himself a skillful craftsman To prepare an idol that will not totter. 21 Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22 It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. 23 He it is who reduces rulers to nothing, Who makes the judges of the earth meaningless. 24 Scarcely have they been planted, Scarcely have they been sown, Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth, But He merely blows on them, and they wither, And the storm carries them away like stubble. 25 “To whom then will you liken Me That I would be his equal?" says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these stars, The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing.”

This is one of the greatest passages of the greatness of God found in all the Bible, and it came at a time when Israel needed to hear it, for I suppose that many of the remnant were wondering what really happened to God, for now the Gentile nations seemingly were in charge.  As we look at this passage we can see that in verses 12-20 that God is greater than anything on earth, and then in verses 21-26 we see that God is greater than anything in heaven.  This is true because God created all things and is in control of all things, and this is part of His attributes.  People back then, and I suppose some even know were worshiping idols, made out of stone, or wood, or even metal, but these are all things that God created, and so this was an exercise in futility.

These are wonderful verses to think over and to meditate upon to see the greatness of God, for in this section we can see God’s creation, and not only His creation, but the fact that He controls His creation.  Dr. Wiersbe writes “When you behold the greatness of God, then you will see everything else in life in its proper perspective.”

Dr. Wiersbe quotes someone who said “Someone has defined ‘circumstances’ as ‘those nasty things you see when you get your eyes off of God.’  If you look at God through your circumstances, He will seem small and very far away, but if by faith you look at your circumstances through God, He will draw very near and reveal His greatness to you.”

Again please take time to read over this passage and to meditate upon it!

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I like the last quote from Dr. Wiersbe as I should look my circumstances through God He will draw near to me.  I don’t want to look at God through my circumstances for He will seem very small.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Look at my circumstances through God, for He is and always be in control.

Memory verses for the week:  2 Peter 1:1-8

1 Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:  2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; 3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.  4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.  5 For this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, 7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.  8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfaithful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Answer to yesterday’s Bible Question:  “Peter” (Matthew 16:16).

Today’s Bible Question:  “In Psalm 23, the Lord makes me to lie down where?”

Answer in our next SD.
