PT-1 "The Promise" (Matt. 16:27a)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 10/10/2022 10:20 AM

My Worship Time                                                                                Focus: PT-1 “The Promise”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Matthew 16:27a

Message of the verse:  27 “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels;”

Let’s talk about “The Son of Man” as we begin this section.  I just did a word search of “the Son of Man” using the NASB and looking from Matthew through Acts and found it is used 81 times, so I think that it is safe to day that Jesus liked this term.  The name reflects His humanness and also His incarnation, of His fully identifying Himself with mankind as one of their own, and in the prophetic context the ancient title has especially a very rich significance.

I was looking for this term in the book of Daniel as that seemed to me that I have seen it there, but in the NASB I could not find it, and then I read the following from John MacArthur’s commentary:  “In his vision of the four beasts, Daniel looked, as if it were, across the entire history of mankind and saw its awesome climax.”  9 "As I looked, "thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. 10 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.”

MacArthur goes on to explain:  “After the beast, the supreme satanic world leader and the Antichrist, is destroyed, Daniel sees “11 "Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire. 12 (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.) 13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshipped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed” (11-14).”

I think that it is safe to say that the disciples of Jesus were at this time depressed as they had been on a “spiritual high” and then Jesus tells them that He would die, and so what we see in 27a should have been something to lift their spirits, as Jesus speaks of His coming and as we looked at the verses in the 7th chapter of Daniel we can see that Daniel saw this many, many years before our Lord came to planet earth.  Yes the things that the disciples wanted to see happen will happen but there will be much suffering before that wonderful event shall take place as it will not happen until the end of the tribulation period when at the end there will only be one person in four who will still be left alive, and certainly not all who survive to the end when the Lord returns will be believers.  Pain before gain, suffering before glory is how best to put it.  In the mean time as disciples of Jesus Christ we must be willing to take up our cross and follow Him wherever He chooses to lead us.

We mentioned earlier that this was the first specific revelation to His disciples of His second coming.  It took 16 chapters in order for us to see this truth that Jesus is coming again.  It was after just telling them that He was God in human flesh, that He was the promised Messiah, that He would build a kingdom that nothing could hinder or destroy, however that He first had to be rejected, killed, and rise from the dead, that He now informed them that He will one day, one great day, return in great glory and righteous judgment to establish His throne.

Lord will we will begin our next SD by talking about the word glory and how it is often used in Scripture.
