Introduction to 2 Peter from W. Wiersbe's commentary

EVENING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 10/17/2025 8:22 PM

My Worship Time                                                         Focus: “Faith Results in Spiritual Growth”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                     Reference:  2 Peter 1:5-7

Message of the verses: 5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, 7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.”

Now I mentioned that in this evening’s SD that I was going to go over these verses in 2 Peter again, as I quote from Dr. Warren Wiersbe’s commentary that he wrote on 2 Peter.  Perhaps it would be best this evening to quote his introduction to this first chapter of 2 Peter, and then tomorrow evening go to the verses above and begin to quote from what Dr. Wiersbe has to say about them.

“If anybody in the early church knew the importance of being alert, it was the Apostle Peter.  He had a tendency in his early years to feel overconfident when danger was near and to overlook the Master’s warnings.  He rushed ahead when he should have waited; he slept when he should have prayed; he talked when he should have listened.  He was a courageous, but careless, Christian.

“But he learned his lesson, and he wants to help us learn it too.  In his first epistle, Peter emphasized the grace of God (1 Peter 5:12), but in his second letter, his emphasis is on the knowledge of God.  The word know or knowledge is used at least thirteen times in this short epistle.  The word does not mean a mere intellectual understanding of some truth, though that is included.  It means a living participation in the truth in the sense that our Lord used in John 17:3—‘This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent’ (italics mine).

“Peter opened his letter with a description of the Christian life.  Before he described the counterfeits, he described the true believers.  The best way to detect falsehood is to understand the characteristics of the truth.  Peter made three important affirmations about the true Christian life.”

Now let me just say that the third affirmation about the true Christian life is the one that I will be focusing on in these following Spiritual Diaries.

Now I want to go back and talk about how bankers are trained to spot counterfeit bills, as this goes along with what Dr. Wiersbe wrote at the end of his introduction seen above in highlighted section.  A bank teller is taught everything about true bills in order that when they see a false or counterfeit bill they will recognize it.  I suppose that this goes along with the cults that are out there as a true believer continues in his life to know more and more about the Word of God then he will be able to recognize false “religions.”  Peter wrote the following in the last verse of the third chapter of his first letter:  “2Pe 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
