Message of the verse: “Her parents were amazed; but He
instructed them to tell no one what had happened.”
Sometimes when one reads different stories in the
Bible like raising someone from the dead, the more you read it, it seems to
lose some of its greatness, but it should not do that. Now in the case of the girl’s parents they
were in addition to being overjoyed that their daughter was restored to live, her
parents were amazed. Amazed, writes
John MacArthur translates a form of the verb existemi, which literally
means “to stand outside oneself,” and is translated “He has lost His senses” in
Mark 3:21.
(Mark 3:21)
“21 And when his family heard it, they went out
to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”
MacArthur
writes “It signifies that the girl’s parents were extremely astonished to the
point of being terrified, as were the disciples (v. 25), the people of Gadara
(v. 37), and the woman healed of the hemorrhage (v. 47) earlier in this chapter.”
(v. 25)
“25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And
they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this,
that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”
(v. 37)
“37 Then all the people of the surrounding country
of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great
fear. So he got into the boat and returned.”
(v. 47)
“47 And when the woman saw that she was not
hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the
presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been
immediately healed.”
“That the Lord instructed them to
tell no one what had happened does not mean that He did not want people to
know about the miracle. The news was
impossible to keep secret (cf. Matt. 9:26), since everyone would see the
resurrected girl.”
(cf. Matt. 9:26)
“26 And the report of this went through all that
district.”
“There
were times when Jesus did not want the news of a miracle to be spread, because
the resulting crowds of curiosity seekers would hinder His ministry (cf. Mark
1:40-45) or seek to make Him king by force (John 6:14-15), or as an act of
judgment, hiding the truth from those confirmed in their rejection of Him (Luke
9:21).”
(cf. Mark 1:40-45)
40 ¶ And a leper came to him, imploring him, and
kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and
touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he
was made clean. 43 And Jesus sternly
charged him and sent him away at once, 44
and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show
yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a
proof to them.” 45 But he went out and
began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no
longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were
coming to him from every quarter.”
(John 6:14-15)
“14 When the people saw the sign that he had
done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” 15
¶ then that they were about to come and
take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by
himself.”
(Luke 9:21)
“21 And he strictly charged and commanded them to
tell this to no one,”
“As noted
above, the news would spread on its own.
The parents could enjoy being reunited with their daughter, and rejoice
in Christ’s goodness, grace, and mercy to them.
“All of those matters could play a part
in the restriction of silence Jesus put on them—but they are not the main
reason. Our Lord frequently called for
this kind of silence (Matt. 8:4; 9:30; 12:16; 17:9; Mark 1:25, 34, 44; 3:12;
5:43; 7:36; 8:26; 9:9; Luke 4:41; 9:21).
(Matt. 8:4; 9:30; 12:16; 17:9; Mark
1:25, 34, 44; 3:12; 5:43; 7:36; 8:26; 9:9; Luke 4:41; 9:21).
“4 And Jesus said to him, “See that you say
nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that
Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
“30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly
warned them, “See that no one knows about it.”
“16 and ordered them not to make him known.”
“19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and
said, “Why could we not cast it out?”
“25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent,
and come out of him!”
“34 And he healed many who were sick with various
diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to
speak, because they knew him.”
“44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to
anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what
Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
“12 And he strictly ordered them not to make him
known.”
“43 And he strictly charged them that no one
should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.”
“36 And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But
the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.”
“26 And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not
even enter the village.”
“9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he
charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen
from the dead.”
“41 And demons also came out of many, crying,,
“You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to
speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.”
“21 And he strictly charged and commanded them to
tell this to no one,”
“The real
reason is given in Mark 8:30-31 “30 And
he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. 31 And he began to teach them that the Son of
Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests
and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.” “He did not
want to be known as a healer or miracle worker—or even only as the Christ—those
were true but incomplete. When He is
proclaimed, it must be as the crucified and risen Savior. There is no gospel of Jesus Christ without
the cross in all its meaning and the resurrection with all that it
accomplished. Paul summed it up when he
said he would only preach ‘Christ, and Him crucified’ (1 Cor. 2:2) and
proclaimed that salvation is for those who believe that God raised Him from the
dead (Rom. 10:9-10).”
(Rom. 10:9-10)
“9 because, if you confess with your mouth that
Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you
will be saved. 10 For with the heart one
believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
“This account of two of the
countless miracles the Lord Jesus Christ performed reveals His personal,
compassionate concern for hurting people.
To the oppressed and burdened He offers rest (Matt. 11:28-30); for the
troubled He provides peace (John 14:27; 16:33); and most important of all, to
those enslaved by sin He offers salvation (Luke 4:16-21; 19:10) through the
cross and resurrection to come.”
rest (Matt. 11:28-30)
“28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy
laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take
my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls. 30
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
peace (John 14:27; 16:33)
“27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to
you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled,
neither let them be afraid.”
“33 I have said these things to you, that in me
you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I
have overcome the world."
salvation (Luke 4:16-21; 19:10)
“16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been
brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day,
and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll
of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the
place where it was written, 18 "The
Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news
to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering
of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s
favor." 20 And he rolled up the
scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in
the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And
he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your
hearing.”
“10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save
the lost.’”
