PT-2 “A Profile of a Christian Messenger” (Luke 9:1-9)

MORNING SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 10/6/2026 9:15 AM

My Worship Time                                           Focus:  PT-2 “A Profile of a Christian Messenger”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                                     Reference:  Luke 9:1-9

Message of the verses:  “9 Now He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and the power to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing. 3 And He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, neither a staff, nor a [a]bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two [b]tunics. 4 And whatever house you enter, stay there [c]until you leave that city. 5 And as for all who do not receive you, when you leave that city, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 And as they were leaving, they began going [d]throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead, 8 and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9 Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded; but who is this Man about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see Him.”

I will begin where I left of in copying MacArthur’s introduction to the verses above.

“Here as he occasionally did, Luke omitted events recorded elsewhere in the Gospels.  He ended chapter 8 with the account of two miracles: the healing of a woman with an issue of blood, and the raising of Jairus’s daughter.  But in between those healings and the sending of the Twelve, Jesus made the second and final recorded trip to His hometown of Nazareth (Mark 6:1-6).”

(Mark 6:1-6)

“1 ¶  He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2  And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? 3  Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. 4  And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” 5  And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6  And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.”

“Sadly, the people there rejected Him again, as they had the first time He ministered there (Luke 4:16-30).”

(Luke 4:16-30)

“16  And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17  And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18  "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19  to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor." 20  And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21  And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22  And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23  And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.” 24  And he said, "Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25  But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26  and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27  And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." 28  When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29  And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30  But passing through their midst, he went away.”

“Though they could not deny His miraculous power over demons, disease, death, and the natural world, being consumed with self-righteous pride, they indignantly rejected His diagnosis of them as spiritually poor, prisoners, blind, and oppressed (4:18).”

(Luke 4:18)

18  "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,”

“After leaving Nazareth, Jesus continued to travel around Galilee teaching in the villages (Mark 6:6) until He commissioned the Twelve.”

(Mark 6:6)

“6  And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.”

“It is at that point that Luke picks up the narrative.  Although they had already been named apostles, the Twelve had not yet been set apart from the larger group of Christ’s followers and disciples.  The Lord now called the twelve together  to send them out, in keeping with His pledge to make them fishers of men (Matt. 4:19).”

(Matt. 4:19)

“19  And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Spiritual Meaning for my life today:  Looking back at the demon possessed man from chapter eight as Jesus sent him out to tell others what the Lord had done for him I can also tell others what the Lord has done for me in order to call me to Himself when He saved me.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Trust the Lord to work in my heart in order to show me what He has for me as far as any kind of relationship, whether or not to get my house ready to sell, whether I should build a place in my daughter’s back yard to live there.  I certainly need a great deal of peace to make any type of move like that.  10/6/2026 9:40 AM
