My Worship Time Focus: Foolish
Talkers
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Eccl. 10:12
Message of the
verses: We will take a short moment
to review where we are in this tenth chapter of Eccl. by quoting the following
from Dr. Wiersbe: ““Having laid down the
principle, Solomon then applied it to four different ‘fools.’” Today we are looking at the third type of foolish
person.
When we were studying the book of Proverbs we saw scattered
throughout that book that Solomon had much to say about foolish talkers, of
putting it another way the speech of the fools.
We will now look at four characteristics of the foolish persons words.
The first one is that they are destructive words that
these foolish people speak as seen in verse twelve: “12 Words from the mouth of a wise man are
gracious, while the lips of a fool consume him.” Proverbs 10:32 and also 25:11 speaks of the
gracious words that the wise person speaks:
“32 The lips of the righteous bring forth what is acceptable, But the
mouth of the wicked what is perverted. 11
Like apples of gold in settings of silver Is a word spoken in right
circumstances.”
Let us look at
what was predicted about the way that our Lord Jesus Christ would speak from
the prophet Isaiah and chapter fifty, verse four: “The Lord GOD has given Me
the tongue of disciples, That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a
word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a
disciple.” I don’t suppose that I have
ever thought about this, but I should have been thinking about the words of the
Lord Jesus Christ and how they were kind to those who were in need of kindness
and yet they were spoken in anger to those who deserved His anger. This is in contrast to the foolish persons
words as they speak out whatever is on their mind not caring if they hurt
someone or not. The NIV translation says
“a fool is consumed by his own lips” in Eccl. 10:12.
James has a lot to say about the destructive power of the
tongue in James 3:5-8 “5 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and
yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a
small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue
is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on
fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. 7 For every species of
beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been
tamed by the human race. 8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless
evil and full of deadly poison.” Yes the
Bible has a lot to say about the tongue and the words that it forms both good
and bad.
We will continue to look at this subject in the next SD.
