SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/13/2013
7:09 AM
My Worship Time Focus: Life is a
Gift: Enjoy It (PT-3)
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Eccl. 12:1-8
Message of the
verses: We begin the last
sub-section of the first main point in the last chapter of Dr. Wiersbe’s
commentary on Ecclesiastes (Be Satisfied).
Remember (12:1-8):
“1 ¶ Remember now thy Creator in
the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh,
when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; 2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or
the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: 3 In the day when the keepers of the house
shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease
because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, 4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets,
when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the
bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which
is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and
the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to
his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: 6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the
golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel
broken at the cistern. 7 Then shall the
dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who
gave it. 8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all
is vanity.” (AVRLE)
Solomon begins to remember as he writes about growing old
and he begins with stating that it is best to remember your Creator while you
are young. Solomon wants young people to
begin with a good habit of studying the Word of God and serving the God of the
Word when they are young, when you have more energy to do it, and then he
begins to talk about old age. The reason
that I chose to use the KJV today is because Dr. Wiersbe describes what he
believes what Solomon is saying about old age in his commentary of which I want
to share in this SD.
“Keepers of the
house—Your arms and hands tremble. Strong
men—Your legs, knees, and shoulders weaken and you walk bent over. Grinders—you
start to lose your teeth. Windows—Your vision begins to
deteriorate. Doors—Either your hearing starts to fail, or you close your
mouth Grinding—You can’t chew your food, or your ears can’t pick up the
sounds outdoors. Rise up—You wake up with the birds early
each morning, and wish you could sleep longer.
Music—Your voice starts to
quaver and weaken. Afraid—You are terrified of heights and
afraid of falling while you walk down the street. Grasshopper—You
just drag yourself along, like a grasshopper at the close of the summer season. Desire—You
lose your appetite, or perhaps your sexual desire. Long
home—You go to your eternal [long] home and people mourn your death.”
This
portion of Scripture gives us one of the best, if not the best description of
old age and dying in all of literature.
We see the last time in this book of Ecclesiastes that
Solomon uses the term “vanity of vanities,” as he ends the book the way he
began it and this emphasizing the emptiness of life without God. As we look at life under the sun, that is
life without God it does all look vain, but when we are a believer in Jesus
Christ life is not vain, but according to 1 Cor. 15:58 “your labor is not in
vain in the Lord.”
Spiritual meaning
for my life today: I just don’t want
to remember my Savior when I was young, but remember Him each and every day of
my life.
My Steps of Faith for Today: Trust the Lord to give me the strength to
take care of two of our grandchildren today, and to have a good time with them.
Memory verse for
today: Psalm 46:1
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in
trouble.
