The Oracle Concerning Edom (Isaiah 21:11-12)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 8/22/2013 8:16 PM

My Worship Time                                                              Focus:  “The oracle concerning Edom”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Isaiah 21:11-12

Message of the verses:  “11 The oracle concerning Edom. One keeps calling to me from Seir, "Watchman, how far gone is the night? Watchman, how far gone is the night?" 12 The watchman says, ‘Morning comes but also night. If you would inquire, inquire; Come back again.’”

You can see that this will be rather short for we are only looking at two verses from Isaiah 21 which speaks of Edom.  Edom came from Jacob’s brother Esau, whose nickname was “red [Edom]” (See Genesis 25:21-24).  We know that Edom hated the Israelites: “Remember, O LORD, against the sons of Edom The day of Jerusalem, Who said, "Raze it, raze it To its very foundation,’” (Psalm 137:7).  It had to go back to when Esau and Jacob were born and God told Rebecca that she had two nations in her womb and that the older would serve the younger of which Esau would serve Jacob.  Dr. Wiersbe explains some things from these two verses as he writes:  “Dumah and Seir are names for Edom (Numbers 24:18).  Isaiah moved one letter in the Hebrew word Adom and created Dum, which means ‘stillness, silence.’  It was his way of saying, ‘Edom will be silent; it will be no more.’”  (Remember that Dr. Wiersbe is using the KJV.)  “11 ¶ The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night? 12 The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.”

Isaiah was the watchman on the wall and let Edom know that the darkness would not last forever, but it would return shortly after the dawn came.  Assyria would be defeated by the Lord, and then the Babylonians would defeat both Judah and Edom, but Edom would survive until the time of the Romans for the Herod’s were from Edom (Idumeans). After Rome fell then Edom would also vanish.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I can see from the descriptions that Isaiah gives of these nations that God is surely in control of all the nations of the world, back then and today even though many people do not believe or understand all of this.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Trust the Lord to guild my path as seen in Proverbs 3:5-6.

Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 46 (All)

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; 3 though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride.  Selah.  4 There is a river whose streams make glade the city of God, The holy dwelling place of the most high.  5 God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved, God will help her when morning dawns.

6 The nations make an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice, the earth melted.  7 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.  8 Come behold the works of the Lord, who has wrought desolations in the earth.  9 He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the sword in two; He burns the chariots with fire.  10 “Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.”  11 The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold.  Selah.
