Assyria's Burial (Ezekiel 31:15-18)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 3/25/2015 10:30 PM

My Worship Time                                                                                      Focus:  Assyria’s Burial

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Ezekiel 31:15-18

Message of the verses:  “15 ’Thus says the Lord GOD, "On the day when it went down to Sheol I caused lamentations; I closed the deep over it and held back its rivers. And its many waters were stopped up, and I made Lebanon mourn for it, and all the trees of the field wilted away on account of it. 16 "I made the nations quake at the sound of its fall when I made it go down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit; and all the well-watered trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, were comforted in the earth beneath. 17 “They also went down with it to Sheol to those who were slain by the sword; and those who were its strength lived under its shade among the nations. 18 “To which among the trees of Eden are you thus equal in glory and greatness? Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth beneath; you will lie in the midst of the uncircumcised, with those who were slain by the sword. So is Pharaoh and all his hordes!"’ declares the Lord GOD."”   (NASB)

15 “’The Message of GOD, the Master: On the day of the funeral of the Big Tree, I threw the great deep into mourning. I stopped the flow of its rivers, held back great seas, and wrapped the Lebanon Mountains in black. All the trees of the forest fainted and fell. 16 I made the whole world quake when it crashed, and threw it into the underworld to take its place with all else that gets buried. All the trees of Eden and the finest and best trees of Lebanon, well-watered, were relieved 17 -they had descended to the underworld with it—along with everyone who had lived in its shade and all who had been killed. 18 “’Which of the trees of Eden came anywhere close to you in splendor and size? But you’re slated to be cut down to take your place in the underworld with the trees of Eden, to be a dead log stacked with all the other dead logs, among the other uncircumcised who are dead and buried. "’This means Pharaoh, the pompous old goat. "’Decree of GOD, the Master.’"”  (Message)

We have already see from the 28th chapter of Ezekiel how the Lord dealt with Tyre, and in our study of Isaiah and in chapter 14 of that book we saw how God planed to take care of Babylon, and no we see in this section how God would take care of Assyria, and that is because all of these nations had rebelled against God.  Dr. Wiersbe points out that in verse eighteen the prophet Ezekiel shows that this same lesson will be learned by Pharaoh king of Egypt:  “To which of the trees in Eden will you then be likened in glory and greatness?  Yet you shall be brought down…to the depts. Of the earth…” (NKJV).

Dr. Wiersbe concludes by writing “The Egyptians were very careful in their practice of circumcision, but their ruler would be lying in Sheol with the dead from nations that didn’t practice it at all.  What humiliation! (See 28:10.)  He though he and his kingdom were as great as Assyria, so God humbled him by putting him with the Assyrians in the world of the dead.”

What we can learn from this is that God hates sin and as we are learning from our study in Revelation God not only hates sin but will bring about His vengeance upon the people who care not that He hates sin because they are too busy in caring for themselves as they care less about God.  We see this happening throughout the Old Testament and will see it happen in the last days which are called the Tribulation Period as seen in Revelation.  3/25/2015 10:48 PM
