PT-2 "The Specific Fulfillments" (John 19:1718,23-25a)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 5/10/2017 11:46 AM

My Worship Time                                                          Focus:  PT-2 “The Specific Fulfillments”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  John 19:17-30

Message of the verses:  “17 They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between… 23  Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. 24 So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be"; this was to fulfill the Scripture: "THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS." 25 Therefore the soldiers did these things.”

We are looking at these SD’s from these verses to show some of the things that were written about Jesus which were fulfilled.  Now we know for sure that these are not the only prophecies that were fulfilled in the life of our Lord while He was on earth, but these are some of the ones fulfilled that happened during His crucifixion.  Now I probably have written what I am about to write in other Spiritual Diaries, but well worth repeating.  If one were to calculate the chances of the odds that Jesus fulfilled all of the OT prophecies that were written about the Messiah, it would be like covering the state of Texas six feet high with silver dollars and then asking a person to find a specific silver dollar.  Now remember that all the people who live in the world today could fit in the state of Texas so that means that one would need a lot of silver dollars to cover the stated six feet high.  All the prophecies in the OT were fulfilled concerning Jesus’ first coming, including His crucifixion, rising from the dead, and ascending into heaven, so when you think about that you know that they were fulfilled because God is in charge, and He is also in charge of what will happen with the rest of life on planet earth including the second coming of our Lord at the rapture, the judgment seat of Christ in heaven, the tribulation period, the second physical coming of our Lord, the judgment that follows, the millennial kingdom, the short war at the end of that 1000 years with the defeat of those against the Messiah, the Great White Throne Judgment, the destruction of planet earth and all the stars, and the transporting all resurrected believers to the New Jerusalem at the end of the age, and then eternity with our Lord.

We now begin by looking at the phrase “bearing His own cross,” and this was the standard policy of condemned prisoners who were to be crucified as they bore the cross piece to the place where the vertical piece was.  John MacArthur writes that this “too fulfilled Old Testament typology.  According to the Mosaic Law, the sin offerings were to be taken outside the camp of Israel.  Exodus 29:14 reads, ‘But the flesh of the bull and its hide and its refuse, you shall burn with fire outside the camp; it is a sin offering.’  Leviticus adds, ‘the rest of the bull [the sin offering], he [the priest] is to bring out to a clean place outside the camp where the ashis are poured out, and burn it on wood with fire; where the ashes are poured out it shall be burned…But the bull of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be taken outside the camp, and they shall burn their hides, their flesh, and their refuse in the fire’ (4:12; 16:27).  Noting the theological significance of Jesus, the final sin offering, being executed outside the city, the author of Hebrews wrote, ‘For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp.  Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate’ (Heb. 13:11-12).”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I am thankful for all of the fulfilled prophecy that was fulfilled at the first coming of Christ and surely look forward to what He will fulfill at His second coming.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  I am asking God to continue to give me peace as I prepare my Sunday school lesson, that God will give me what He wants me to say about the verses in the 17th chapter of John’s Gospel, and that they will bring glory to Him.

Answer to yesterday’s Bible question:  “Damascus” (Acts 9:3).
