My Worship Time Focus: PT-2 A Word
to Husbands
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Colossians
3:19
Message of the
verses: “19 Husbands, love your
wives and do not be embittered against them.”
I want to begin this SD by looking at the word “embittered”
in the Greek/English dictionary.
“1) to make
bitter
1a) to produce a
bitter taste in the stomach
2) to embitter.
exasperate
2a) render angry,
indignant
2b) to be
embittered, irritated
2c) to visit with
bitterness, to grieve (deal bitterly with)
We can see from this definition the things that husbands
are not to do to their wives. Now in our
last SD we looked at Ephesians 5:22-28 and so I am not going to put those
verses on this SD but we will talk a bit about them now.
These verses in Ephesians go into more detain of what the
duties of the husband and wife have for each other, and there are actually more
verses that speak to what the husband is to do for the wife than what the wife
has for the husband, and I think that is because of the leadership role that
the husband has in the home. The key to
the husband actions for his wife is love and love is not some kind of feeling,
but love is giving someone something that they can never earn or get for
themselves.
John MacArthur concludes this section on husbands with
the following: “Paul adds another
helpful note when, in 1 Corinthians 7:33-34, he calls for a mutual concern in
marriage. The husband is to seek to find
‘how he may please his wife,’ and the wife to pursue ‘how she may please her
husband.’ Though there is authority and
submission by God’s design, there is also spiritual equality and mutual longing
for each partner to please the other.
The woman most pleases the man with loving submission, while he pleases
her with loving authority.”
