My Worship Time Focus: “Healing the two Blind Men
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Matt.
9:27-32
Message of the verses: “27 As Jesus went
on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son
of David!" 28 When He entered the house, the blind men came up to Him, and
Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said
to Him, "Yes, Lord." 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, "It
shall be done to you according to your faith." 30 And their eyes were
opened. And Jesus sternly warned them: "See that no one knows about
this!" 31 But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout
all that land. 32 As they were going out, a mute, demon-possessed man was
brought to Him.”
Let
me begin by saying that the “focus” that we are looking at is the first main
section of these verses and we will first look at the intro to these verses,
and then look at the first subsection in our SD for today, and then after that
we will be looking at other sub-sections from these verses.
Intro: It was when Jesus had left the house of
Jairus after raising his daughter from the dead that “Jesus passed on from
there” and “two blind men followed Him.”
Now if these two blind men were in the crowd of people around the house
of Jairus then they would have known what Jesus did, for all of the mourners and
flute-players would have been gone, and I have to believe that the news of
raising Jairus’ daughter from the dead would have gotten out. So in this brief account we are shown a
number of things that are truths about these two men. MacArthur writes we will see “Their
condition, their cry, their confrontation, their conversion, the command to
them, their contrariness, and their commitment.”
The Condition of the Men: In our study a few years ago from the gospel
of John we studied about the man born blind in the 9th chapter of
that gospel. We mentioned at the time
that it was possible that the reason that this man was born blind had to do
with a disease that the mother had we named as gonorrhea. This venereal disease had no cure at this
time and so this could have caused the blindness of this man born blind and it
could have also been what caused the blindness of these two men. I am told that the healing of blindness was
the most of all the healings that are mentioned in the gospels. MacArthur writes “Many infants were born
blind because of various diseases suffered by the mother during pregnancy, and
many others became blind a few days after birth by being exposed to venereal
disease, especially gonorrhea, as the passed through the birth canal.
“It
was not uncommon for blind people to associate with others who were blind, and
it is possible that these ‘two blind men’ had been companions in darkness for
many years.”
Today
when a baby is born there are drops put into the babies eyes to prevent
anything like this from happening, but that surely was not the case during the
time Jesus walked on the earth.
