SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/18/2021 10:39 AM
My Worship Time Focus:
PT-1 “The Command to the Men”
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Matthew
9:30b
Message of the
verse: “And
Jesus sternly warned them: "See that no one knows about this!’”
The following is the
Greek word for “sternly warned”: “embrimaomai” and here is the meaning of this word “to charge with
earnest admonition, sternly to charge, threatened to enjoin.” MacArthur writes “sternly warned is an
intensified form of an already strong verb and could even carry the idea of
scolding (see Mark 14:5).” “"For
this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the
money given to the poor." And they were scolding her.”
In this SD we will begin to look at
some of the reasons that Jesus told these men not to tell others of what
happened to them, and I suppose that we will have to speculate on some of these
reasons, but it is important for us to at least try and figure out what Jesus
told these men not to talk about this, after all these men were blind and now
they can see so those who knew them would have to understand that something miraculous
has happened to them. I remember in our
study of Mark that Jesus healed a leper and told him not to tell others but go
to the temple and give the proper sacrifice for the healing of a leper. I remember that the title of that SD was “Jesus
changes places with a leper.” That SD
had to do with the fact that Jesus could not do healing there because of all of
the crowds stopped Him because there were so many more people who came after
the leper had told all the people what Jesus did for him.
MacArthur writes “Jesus’ reason for
this command was not, as some suggest, to keep His miracle-working power from
becoming known. He had already performed
hundreds of public miracles and had become famous for them. His miracles were meant to be publicized,
because they demonstrated His divine messiahship.”
He goes on to write “Nor was the
command given to keep this particular miracle from becoming known for some
reason. Relatives and friends of men
would have known of the miracle the instant they saw the men. And because of His fame as a miracle worker,
they would immediately have concluded that Jesus was the Healer.”
It is obvious that Jesus had another
reason for commanding the men’s silence.
As stated earlier we have to speculate what the reason or reasons
were. We can look at what is perhaps the
best explanation and that seems to be that He did not want His messiahship
proclaimed prematurely. We have talked
in earlier SD’s that Jesus was on a timetable from the Father that was led by
the Holy Spirit in the life of Christ and all things needed to stay on that
perfect timetable, and talking about the fact that He was indeed the Messiah
could have had the same effects as when Jesus feed the 5000 men, seen
especially in the gospel of John, where they wanted to take and make Jesus
their King, and in that case too it was not the time for that to happen. By doing this early we know that the Jews
would not and did not accept Him as their King, and as stated this could have
messed up the timetable, and Jesus was not going to let that happen. We, as believers know that Jesus was indeed
the prophesied King of Israel, but we also know that it was in the plan of God
that He be crucified, and crucified at the exact moment that was ordained by
God.
Now my plan is to finish this
section in our next SD, and then look at a shorter one after that.
Spiritual
meaning for my life today: I can see
from this section that timing, timing in God’s ordained plan for my life is
very important. I believe that God has
had a plan for my life since before the world and it is my desire not to allow
sin to cause me not to do the things that God has planned for me to do.
My Steps of Faith for Today: Trust the
Lord to work in my life as I continue to prepare to teach my Sunday school
lesson on the second and third verse of Hebrews chapter one.
