My Worship Time                                                                                        Focus:  “The Activity”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                    Reference:  Matthew 12:22

Message of the verse:  22Then there was brought to Him a demon-possessed man who was blind and dumb, and He healed him, so that the dumb man spoke and saw.”

As we look at this verse we can see that this man had a world of trouble, as first of all he was demon-possessed, he was blind, he could not speak, and it is entirely possible that he was deaf.  I think of Helen Keller without being demon-possessed when I think of this person.  As we move on in this verse were read “and He healed him” This of course is speaking of Jesus who healed him.  Now we don’t know how many people that Jesus healed who had some if not all of these issues, but perhaps thousands as we read in the Scriptures that when Jesus went into a crowd that He healed all who were there who had different issues.

We can see from this one act that Jesus had powers over both the spirit world of demons and also the physical world of disease.  Jesus could heal any problem that people had, showing that He truly was the Messiah, the Son of God.  We see different times in the Scriptures that Jesus brought people back from the dead, showing that He had power over death as well.

MacArthur writes “Yet most of the sin-blinded people remained unsure about Jesus’ identity and the source of His great power.  They knew that miracles would be proof signs of the Messiah; but they also expected Him to come with a royal fanfare and with military might.  But instead of regal robes, sovereign authority, a throne, trumpets, swords, horses, chariots, and a might army, they saw a Man of compassion, gentleness, and humility—with a following of twelve nondescript disciples and a multitude of hangers-on whose loyalty could hardly be counted on.  Because Jesus did not appear to be a conqueror or a king by their definition, the people would not accept His being the Messiah.  His predicted coming in power and glory to defeat the foes of Israel and set His people free was easy for them to be excited about.  His predicted coming in meekness and humility was not.”   Here is where those who studied the Scriptures like the Scribes and Pharisees should have had their eyes wide open to see that the Scriptures spoke of Jesus coming in this very way.  It seemed at times that the prophets spoke of two Messiah, but what they were really speaking of was both the first and the second coming of Jesus Christ, which they truly did not understand.

As Jesus moved further on in His earthly ministry we see that the scribes and the Pharisees have been dogging Jesus’ footsteps, and they did this because they were afraid that the people would be following Him and thus they would lose their power, not that they cared about the people can truly be seen here.

I seems that Jesus had performed this particular healing on this occasion especially for the benefit of the Pharisees, forcing them to make their verdict concerning Him in public.  It was before their eyes they saw a man become immediately and dramatically delivered of three great afflictions.  They could see this man standing before them and as mentioned they cared more about their power than a man made whole by our Lord.
