EVENING SD FOR 08/13/2024
My Worship Time Focus:
Intro to 1 John 1:5-6, 8, 10
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: 1
John 1:5-6, 8, 10
Message of the verses: “5 This is the
message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in
Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we
say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we
lie and do not practice the truth; 8 If
we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in
us. 10 If we say that we have not
sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.”
John MacArthur entitles his second chapter in his
commentary of 1 John “Tests of Salvation—Part 1: Belief in God and the
Certainty of Sin” and as you can see we will be looking at verses from chapter
one 5-6, 8, and 10, and I think that we probably will understand why he groups
these verses together as we move through this chapter.
In
a moment we will be looking at Acts 20:28-31, and the reason for looking at
these verses is it will help us understand that in addition to leading and
feeding their sheep that godly pastors, as their spiritual shepherds, must warn
their flocks about false teachers, and believe me there are many of them in the
world today who spread doctrinal errors, and that is why we will be looking at
the warning that Paul gives the Ephesian elders as he is about to depart from
them.
“28 “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the
flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the
church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 “I know that after my
departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and
from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw
away the disciples after them.”
There are some other verses
that are suggested for us to look at as they go along with these and I will
list them for you. 1 Timothy 6:20; 2
Timothy 1:13-14. These are all verses
that Paul wrote to his son in the faith Timothy and 2 Timothy is the last
recorded letter he wrote that is found in the New Testament.
I
will now quote one paragraph from MacArthur’s commentary and then Lord willing
I will finish this introduction in the next SD.
“Similarly, John wrote this letter to protect his flock of faithful
believers in Asia Minor by reiterating God’s truth to them. John’s zealous concern for the certainties of
divine teaching also motivated him to write his second and third letters. This, the apostle addressed his second
epistle ‘to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not
only I, but also all who know the truth, for the sake of the truth which abides
in us and will be with us forever’ (vv. 1-2).
Three times in that opening salutation John refers to ‘the truth,’ underscoring
its significance for him. Then in verse
4 he adds, ‘I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth,
just as we have received commandment to do from the Father’ (cf. 3 John 3-4).’”
