SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 8/17/2024 8:49 AM
My Worship Time Focus: PT-2 “The
Religious Wicked”
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Matthew
27:41-44
Message of the verses: “41 In the same way
the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him
and saying, 42 "He saved others; He
cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the
cross and we will believe in Him. 43 “HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE Him
now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’" 44 The
robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same
words. 45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth
hour. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying,
"ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE
YOU FORSAKEN ME?" 47 And some of those who were standing there, when they
heard it, began saying, "This man is calling for Elijah.’”
I want to continue to look at these verses, verses
that for me are very difficult to study because of what is going on with Jesus
can be linked back to me and all sinners so that means everyone who was ever
born, including Adam and Eve whom God created as seen in the first two chapters
of the book of Genesis, but let us now look at the promise that is found in the
third chapter of Genesis that was given after both Adam and Eve sinned: “15 And I will put enmity Between you and the
woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And
you shall bruise him on the heel.’” The
following comes from the John MacArthur study Bible as he comments on
3:15. “After cursing the physical
serpent, God turned to the spiritual serpent, the lying seducer, Satan, and
cursed him. Bruise you on the head…bruise
him on the heel. This ‘first gospel’ is
prophetic of the struggle and its outcome between ‘your seed’ (Satan and
unbelievers, who are called the Devil’s children in Jn. 8:44) and her seed
(Christ, a descendant of Eve, and those in Him) which began in the garden. In the midst of the curse passage, a message
of hope shone forth—the woman’s offspring called “He” is Christ, who will one
day defeat the Serpent. Satan could only ‘bruise’ Christ’s heel (cause Him to
suffer), while Christ will bruise Satan’s head (destroy him with a fatal blow). Paul, in a passage strongly reminiscent to
Gen. 3, encouraged the believers in Rome, ‘And the God of peace will soon crush
Satan under your feet’ (Rom 16:20).
Believers should recognize that they participate in the crushing of
Satan because, along with their Savior and because of His finished work on the
cross, they also are of the woman’s seed.
For more on the destruction of Satan see Heb. 2:14, 15; Rev. 20:10.”
I will now quote these three verses that
MacArthur suggests for us to look at.
“Hebrews 2:14-15 “14 Therefore, since
the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the
same, that through death
He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
15 and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all
their lives.”
Rev. 20:10 “And the devil who deceived
them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the
false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and
ever.”
Now
I want you to piece the verses from Matthew 27 that we are looking today with
Genesis 3:15, Hebrews 2:14-15, and Revelation 20:10. They all can be seen as the story of
salvation, as God says that from the seed of the woman, who is Jesus Christ,
will destroy Satan, which He did through His death on the cross, but as we will
see later on in Matthew’s gospel that He will arise from the dead because He
perfectly paid for sin. Satan is
actually defeated at the cross but will not be put into hell until Revelation
20:10. Satan will be allowed to come out
of hell to deceive the nations at the end of the Millennial Kingdom, but this
will last for a short time and then he goes back into hell for all eternity.
The
point that I once again want to talk about here is what was prophesied in
Genesis 3:15 is happening in Matthew 27:40-50 and verse fifty states “50 And
Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.” I know that we will look at this verse in the
next section, which actually will come in the next chapter of MacArthur’s
commentary, but I want you to notice the words yielded up His spirit.” Jesus Christ died as He gave up His Spirit,
doing it on His own time after His word of paying for our sins was complete.
