Time Focus: PT-3 “The Perfect Propitiation”
Bible Reading &
Meditation Reference: 1
John 2:2
Message
of the verse: “and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins;
and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.”
I want to begin with by saying that salvation is
something that is simple to understand as I have gone over how a person can be
saved in many of my recent Spiritual Diaries, but to understand what God had to
do in order to save sinful people, I have to say, that that there is a lot of
things that had to be done. This was no
problem for God for He knows all things, but in explaining the things that God
has done takes some time and part of that plan has to do with this word propitiation,
something that we have been looking at for several Spiritual Diaries. I think that it is best if I quote a paragraph
from John MacArthur’s commentary and I have to say that there are a lot of
verses that he references in this paragraph.
I think that it would be good that at the end of this quote that I will
then quote the verses in order that are referenced.
“By
God’s design, pictured in the law’s requirement of a lamb without blemish (Num.
6:14), the Lord Jesus Christ had to be sinless (cf. 2:1). Otherwise He would not have been acceptable
to the Father (cf. Heb. 9:14) and would have been subject to the judgment of
God for His own sins. But He is
righteous (Isa. 53:11), holy (Rev. 3:7), innocent (John 8:46; 18:37-38),
undefiled (Heb. 7:26), and separate from sinners—not merely the agent who made
propitiation for sinners, He is the propitiation.
Num. 6:14 “‘He shall present
his offering to the LORD: one male lamb a year old without defect for a burnt
offering and one ewe-lamb a year old without defect for a sin offering and one
ram without defect for a peace offering.”
1 John 2:1 “My little children, I
am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we
have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
Heb. 9:14 “how much more will the
blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish
to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
Isa. 53:11 “As a result of the
anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge
the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their
iniquities.”
Rev. 3:7 “"And to the angel of
the church in Philadelphia write: He who is holy, who is true, who has the key
of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says
this:”
John 8:46 “"Which one of you
convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me?
John
18:37-38 “37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So
You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am
a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to
testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." 38 Pilate
said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out
again to the Jews and said to them, "I find no guilt in Him.”
Heb. 7:26 “For it was fitting for us to have such a high
priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the
heavens;”
“The
prophet Isaiah portrayed Him as the ideal sacrifice:
“5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He
was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell
upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone
astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the
iniquity of us all To fall on Him. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet
He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a
sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth. 8 By
oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who
considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the
transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due? 9 His grave was assigned
with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done
no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth. 10 But the LORD was pleased
To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as
a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His
days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand” (Isa.
53:5-10).
“The entire divine plan of redemption flows from the
Father’s love for unworthy and undeserving sinners (Rom. 5:8; Eph. 1:4-7). John made this truth plain when he wrote, “In
this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to
be the propitiation for our sins” (John 4:10; cf. Titus 3:5).
