SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 2/8/2025 8:42 AM
My Worship Time Focus:
PT-3 Intro to “The Danger of False
Teaching”
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: 2 Timothy 2:14-19
Message of the verses: “14 Remind them
of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to
wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the
hearers. 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who
does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 16 But
avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further
ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are
Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 men who have gone astray from the truth saying that
the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some. 19
Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, "The
Lord knows those who are His," and, "Everyone who names the name of
the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.’”
I will continue to quote from John MacArthur’s commentary on the introduction to these verses above. “Peter reminded believers of his day that ‘false prophets also arouse among the people [of Israel], just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned’ (2 Peter 2:1-2).
“Paul warned the Ephesian elders, ‘Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has make you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them’ (Acts 20:28-30). It was this threat of deception that caused the Holy Spirit to inspire Paul to write, ‘Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil’ (1 Thess. 5:21-22).
“As
a young man probably past his mid-thirties, Timothy had been assigned by Paul
to minister to the church in Ephesus and to correct some of the problems
mentioned in the previous reference. The
‘salvage wolves’ had already begun their disruptive and destructive work, and
the congregation was suffering serious spiritual and moral decline. As it always does, ungodly teaching led to
ungodly living.
“In
his first letter to Timothy, Paul said,
3 As I urged you upon my departure for
Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to
teach strange doctrines, 4 nor to pay attention to myths and endless
genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering
the administration of God which is by faith...18 This command I entrust to you,
Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made
concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, 19 keeping faith and a
good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their
faith (1 Tim. 1:3-4, 18-19).
