The Servant & the Lord God (Isaiah 50:4-11)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 11/11/2013 9:05 AM

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  The Servant & the Lord God

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Isaiah 50:4-11

Message of the verses:  Just a bit of review before we look at this second main section as I quote Dr. Wiersbe:  “These chapters present God’s Servant, Messiah, in three important relationships: to the Gentile nations (49:1-50:3), to His Father (50:4-11), and to His people Israel (51:1-52:12).”

“4 The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of disciples, That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple. 5 The Lord GOD has opened My ear; And I was not disobedient Nor did I turn back. 6  I gave My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting. 7 For the Lord GOD helps Me, Therefore, I am not disgraced; Therefore, I have set My face like flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed. 8 He who vindicates Me is near; Who will contend with Me? Let us stand up to each other; Who has a case against Me? Let him draw near to Me. 9 Behold, the Lord GOD helps Me; Who is he who condemns Me? Behold, they will all wear out like a garment; The moth will eat them. 10 Who is among you that fears the LORD, That obeys the voice of His servant, That walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God. 11 Behold, all you who kindle a fire, Who encircle yourselves with firebrands, Walk in the light of your fire And among the brands you have set ablaze. This you will have from My hand: You will lie down in torment.”

This is the third song of the Messiah that we have looked at, as the first was found in Isaiah 42:1-7, and the second in Isaiah 49:1-7, and in them we have found hints of His opposition, but in this one we see some of His suffering that He went through while on planet earth.  The forth song is found in Isaiah 52:12-53:12 and that song will give the reason for His suffering, and of course it is for the sins of those who are His children, who will accept His suffering as payment for their sins and in exchange receive His righteousness.

I have highlighted “The Lord God” that is found four times in our passage for today, and this is translated “Jehovah Adonai,” and it can be translated “Sovereign Lord.”  This title is found nowhere else in the Servant songs.  Dr. Wiersbe quotes Robert B. Girdlestone who writes “the name ‘Jehovah Adonai’ means that ‘God is the owner of each member of the human family, and that He consequently claims the unrestricted obedience of all.”  There the emphasis in this section of Scripture is on the Servant’s submission to the Lord God in every area of His life and service.  That is quite a statement.

“4 The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.”  This is verse four in the KJV of the Bible and we see the word “learned” in place of “Disciple” which is found in the NASB.  This word means “taught or learned, or disciple” and what we see here is the submission of the Messiah His Father, which is something that is found throughout the NT Gospels and we also find it in Philippians 2:5-11 “5  Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6  who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7  but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”  First came His obedient suffering and then came His glory.  I have mentioned in earlier SD’s that the first words we see of Messiah are found when He was twelve years old where He was found in the temple where He stated that He must be about His Father’s business and the last thing that He said from the cross is “it is finished.”  The Greek word for it is finished means “paid in full,” and so the business that He was about was to pay for the sins of His children, those who have and will accept this forgiveness in a personal way and receive His righteousness in the exchange.

In verse five we see the term “open ear” and this refers to the obedience of the Servant to the Lord God, which we have spoke of earlier.  This is the opposite of the people to which Isaiah was ministering to, for they were disobedient to the Lord “19  "If you consent and obey, You will eat the best of the land; 20  "But if you refuse and rebel, You will be devoured by the sword." Truly, the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”  (Isaiah 1:19-20)

In verses 7-11 of our passage we see that the Servant did all of this obedience to the Lord God by having faith in Him, and this is something that all of His children are to also learn about, for faith is a very important thing to learn as Paul wrote about to the Ephesians “8  For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).”  While Jesus was on earth He too had to learn to live by faith as we have seen in the Philippian passage that He emptied Himself of all His glory and power and thus lived a life of faith.

Dr. Wiersbe finishes his commentary on this section with the following paragraph:  “Verses 10-11 are addressed especially to the Jewish remnant, but they have an application to God’s people today.  His faithful ones were perplexed at what God was doing, but He assured them that their faith would not go unrewarded.  Dr. Bob Jones, Sr. often said, ‘Never doubt in the dark what God has told you in the light.’ But the unbelieving ones who try to eliminate the darkness by lighting their own fires (i.e following their own schemes) will end up in sorrow and suffering.  In obedience to the Lord, you may find yourself in the darkness, but do not panic, for He will bring you the light you need just at the right time.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  One of the things that amazes me is the example that my Lord gives to me in becoming a man and obeying and submitting to His Father, even to the point of dying on the cross in order that I too may receive His righteousness and become a part of His family forever so that I too will be able to serve God in this life and in the life to come.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Submit to and obey the Lord.
