PT-2 Covetousness
Bible Reading &
Meditation Reference: Micah 2:1-5
Message of the verses: “1 Woe to those who scheme iniquity, Who work
out evil on their beds! When morning comes, they do it, For it is in the power
of their hands. 2 They covet
fields and then seize them, And houses, and take them away. They rob a man and
his house, A man and his inheritance. 3 Therefore thus says the LORD,
"Behold, I am planning against this family a calamity From which you
cannot remove your necks; And you will not walk haughtily, For it will be an
evil time. 4 “On that day they will take up against you a taunt And utter a
bitter lamentation and say, ’We are completely destroyed! He exchanges the
portion of my people; How He removes it from me! To the apostate He apportions
our fields.’ 5 “Therefore you will have no one stretching a measuring line For
you by lot in the assembly of the LORD.”
We
talked briefly about covetousness in our last SD on this section of Scripture
and now we will continue looking at these verses to see what they are all
about. Verse two speaks of the wealthy
people of Micah’s day as they try to get larger and larger estates, as they
think about when they are lying in their beds to get a sinful plan in order to
take things away from the poor people.
Dr. Wiersbe writes “Because of their wealth and their authority in the
land, these men controlled the courts and the councils at the city gates. Thus they got what they wanted.”
These
men cared less about the poor their motto was their version of the “Golden
Rule,” which was whoever has the gold rules, or do to others before they can do
to you. They completely forgot about the
Lord and His Law, and the fact that He owns the land they were trying to steal
from the poor. The Lord wanted the richer people to have compassion on the
poorer people and not to oppress them. “Vindicate
the weak and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and destitute (Psalm
82:3).” To do righteousness and justice
Is desired by the LORD more than sacrifice (Pr. 21:3).” These are a couple of examples the Scriptures
offer to take care of the poor, and to do what is right. Dr. Wiersbe writes “But even if these thieves
had no fear of God, they should have had concern for their fellow human beings
and treated them like people made in the image of God.”
To
help us bring this down to our time Dr. Wiersbe writes “The name of this sin is
‘materialism,’ and it’s committed by people who are covetous and obsessed with
acquiring more and more wealth and ‘things.’
But ‘robber barons’ aren’t the only people who commit these sins. Parents rob their children of time and
companionship by working at several jobs so they can make more money to buy
more ‘fun.’ People rob God of tithes and
offerings that are rightfully His just so they can enjoy ‘the good life’ (Mal.
3:7-12). People forget Matthew 6:33 and
put everything else ahead of the kingdom of God.”
We
see in verses 3-5 that the covetous sinners that Micah speaks of here get what
is coming to them, for whatsoever a man sows he will reap. All the things that they sole to get and
things that the coveted will be taken away from them when their enemies come
and take it all away from them, as God will use the Assyrians and also the
Babylonians to conquer the Northern and Southern Kingdoms of Israel.
