The Court is Convened (Micah 1:1-2)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 12/9/2015 9:27 AM

My Worship Time                                                                          Focus:  The Court is Convened

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                        Reference:  Micah 1:1-2

Message of the verses:  “1 The word of the LORD which came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem. 2 Hear, O peoples, all of you; Listen, O earth and all it contains, And let the Lord GOD be a witness against you, The Lord from His holy temple.”

We begin this SD by talking about the man Micah, a man who saw which way God’s hand was moving, similar to some of King David’s men knew when they left King Saul to begin to serve King David.  It was God who gave these men insight, and it was God who gave Micah insight as to changes that were coming in the land of Israel both Northern and Southern Kingdoms, and there were many.  Remember that Micah was a contemporary of Isaiah so this put his ministry in the 700’s BC.  We mentioned that Micah received three messages from the Lord and put them in outline form in our last SD’s on Micah.  The first message covers the first two chapters of Micah and we will be going through this message for a few days.  This first message is a warning of the wrath of God that is coming on both Israel and Judah and as far as Israel was concerned it came in 722 BC when Assyria destroyed Israel in battle and it would come to Judah beginning in 605 BC in the form of the Babylonians who would destroy Jerusalem in August of 586 BC.

Dr. Wiersbe writes “When the prophet Amos was about to indict Israel and Judah, he started by condemning the Gentile nations around them (Amos 1-2); but the Prophet Micah didn’t take that approach.  Without any formal introduction, he moved right into his message and sounded the alarm.

In previous OT prophet studies we have seen that God holds court and not in the book of Micah we see this once again, as we see this in verses 2-5 of this first chapter of Micah, however God first addresses the whole world in verse two for after all God is the Lord of the whole earth, and all the nations are accountable to Him.  “2 Many nations will come and say, "Come and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD And to the house of the God of Jacob, That He may teach us about His ways And that we may walk in His paths." For from Zion will go forth the law, Even the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 3 And He will judge between many peoples And render decisions for mighty, distant nations. Then they will hammer their swords into plowshares And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they train for war. 4 Each of them will sit under his vine And under his fig tree, With no one to make them afraid, For the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken (Micah 4:2-4).”  Although this section from the 4th chapter speaks of the Millennial kingdom the fact remains that God is the Lord over the entire world.

In God’s court we will see that He is both Judge and witness as He speaks from His Holy temple which is where His Law was kept in the Ark of the Covenant.  Dr. Wiersbe points out that “A holy God must act in righteousness and judge sin.”
