PT-3 "The Profound Expression of Christ's Love" (John 13:31-33)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 11/2/2016 8:19 AM

My Worship Time                                Focus:  PT-3 “The Profound Expression of Christ’s Love”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  John 13:31-33

Message of the verses:  “31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; 32 if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. 33 “Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ’Where I am going, you cannot come.’”

We want to look at the last statement that Christ made regarding His glorification which is “if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself and will glorify Him immediately.”

The first part of this quote, not counting the highlighted part looks beyond the cross to Christ’s exaltation to the Father’s right hand, and there are many verses that speak of this:  Matt. 26:64; Acts 2:33; 5:31; Rom. 8:34; Eph. 1:20; Col. 3:1; Heb. 1:3, 13; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2; 1 Peter 3:22.  We have looked at what Paul wrote in Philippians chapter two in past SD’s which also speaks of this too.  “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name (Phil. 2:9).”

Now as far as this highlighted portion above this speaks of Christ’s resurrection and ascension that would shortly take place following the cross.  This speaks of what is written in Hebrews 12:2 “For the joy, set before Him, He endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right had of the throne of God.”

Now comes the most difficult part for the disciples as seen in verse 33 where Jesus tells them that I a little while they would look for Him, but they would not be able to go with Him, but later on He will tell them that after a while they would be able to follow Him.  Now think of this that John was in his 90’s and still was on planet earth and not in heaven with the Lord Jesus Christ.

We know that His disciples loved Jesus very much and depended on Him totally and now they are finding out that He is going to leave them and this is a heartbreaking message that He is telling them, a message that they did not totally understand and really would not totally understand until they received the promised Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost as seen in Acts chapter two.

MacArthur concludes this section by writing “At the cross, the love of God through Christ was put on display in an unsurpassable and eternally unique way (cf. John 3:16).  Earlier in this chapter, the Lord had illustrated His humble, sacrificial love by washing the disciples’ feet (13:5-15).  Now He pointed to the far greater demonstration of His sacrificial love—the cross.  It is this infinite expression of love that undergirds the Lord’s subsequent command.”  That command we will look at in our next SD from the gospel of John.

Message of the verses:  It is nice to better understand all of the times that the word glory or glorified is used in this section, and nice also to see that the glorification of Christ has to do with His love for me, to which I am very thankful.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Live my life knowing that Christ loves me.

Memory verse for the week:  (Romans 6:15) “15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace?  May it never be!”

Answer to yesterday’s Bible question:  “3 Years” (Exodus 7:7).

Today’s Bible question:  “According to Paul, who killed Jesus?”

Answer in our next SD.
