PT-2 "The Responsibility" (Col. 3:1b-2)

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  PT-2 “The Responsibility”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Colossians 3:1b-2

            Message of the verses:  “keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.”

            In our last SD we ended by looking at a song that helped us to understand that as believers we are to seek things above, and yet as we know more about those things it will help us live a life on earth that will please the Lord.  MacArthur writes “When Christians begin to live in the heavenlies, when they commit themselves to the riches of ‘the Jerusalem above’ (Gal. 4:26), they will live out their heavenly values in this world to the glory of God.”

            In verse one we see that Paul tells us that we are to “keep seeking the things above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God,” and then in verse two we learn how we are to do this as we are to set our minds on those thing above, and not on the things that are on the earth.  It has been said of a person that they can be so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good, and yet I think the opposite is true more times that the statement given first.  If we are heavenly minded then we will be earthly good.  When we look at the words “set your mind” which is the Greek word “phroneo” and this word could be translated “think” or do it more thoughtfully, it could also mean to “have this inner disposition.”  John MacArthur writes “Once again, the present tense indicates continuous action. Lightfoot paraphrases Paul’s thought: ‘You must not only seek heaven, you must also think heaven.’” 

            Now the question may arise as to where we as believers are to get these thoughts that come out of heaven?  Well reading and studying the Word of God will answer that question.  We have mentioned Romans 12:2 in earlier SD’s where we read that we are “transformed by the renewing of our mind.”  Again this can only be done through the Word of God as we study it and memorize it and meditate on it.  The word “transformed” in the Greek is the word “metamorphoo” and we get the word metamorphous from, so just as a worm can turn into a beautiful butterfly a believer can also be turned into something beautiful if we stay in the Word of God to allow it to transform us.
