God will Defeat Your Enemies (Obad. 1:19-21)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 11/15/2015 7:36 PM

My Worship Time                                                              Focus:  God Will Defeat Your Enemies

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Obadiah 1:19-20

Message of the verses:  “19 Then those of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, And those of the Shephelah the Philistine plain; Also, possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, And Benjamin will possess Gilead. 20 And the exiles of this host of the sons of Israel, Who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Will possess the cities of the Negev.”

In order for us to understand the terminology here I will quote Dr. Wiersbe:  “Israel will reclaim the land formerly inhabited by the Edomites (the Negev), the Philistines (the Shephelah), and the Samaritans (Ephraim).  The Jews have been struggling to possess their inheritance for centuries, but other powers have always stood in the way.”  It will be the Lord who will be the One who will cause the Jews to possess their possessions, which of course is the Land the God promised them when He made his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  We know that Israel returned to their land in 1948, but there is coming a day when they will see their Messiah and will believe on Him and then the nation will be born in a day, according to Isaiah 66:8 and also Zechariah 12:10-13:1; and 14:1-9.

God will establish the kingdom:  Obadiah 1:21:  “21 The deliverers will ascend Mount Zion To judge the mountain of Esau, And the kingdom will be the LORD’S.”

We have gone over this ground before but it is worth going over again, and that is that when the Lord returns to earth to set up His kingdom He will have “deliverers” to assist Him in running the kingdom.  Let us look at a few examples from the New Testament to show this.  “27 Then Peter said to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?" 28 And Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29  "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life. 30 “But many who are first will be last; and the last, first (Matthew 19:27-30).”  “42 “Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. 43 “But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 44  "For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will. 45 “Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 “Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes. 47 “Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 “But if that evil slave says in his heart, ’My master is not coming for a long time,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards; 50  the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know, 51  and will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 24:42-51).”  There are two other passages we could look up but I will just give you the references:  “Matthew 25:14-30 and Luke 19:11-27.”

This section actually somewhat fits into the section in Revelation that we have been studying in the last several weeks, that is Revelation 19-22, and after reading and studying that section we can be looking forward to the coming of the Lord assisting the Lord in the Millennial kingdom.

Dr. Wiersbe concludes his commentary on the book of Obadiah by writing “Meanwhile, Gods people must do all they can to get the Gospel out to the billions of people in this world who have never had the opportunity to hear the name of Jesus or learn how to trust Him and be saved.  When the great and terrible Day of the Lord dawns, the nations of the world will be judged for the way they have treated on another and the nation of Israel.  Until that day dawns, God’s church must keep praying ‘Thy kingdom come’ and seek to obey His command to take the Gospel to the whole world.”  I can only say Amen to that!
