PT-1 Divine Judgment Declared (Obad. 1:2-6)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 11/5/2015 7:50 PM

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  Divine Judgment Declared PT-1

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Obadiah 1:2-6

Message of the verses:  We begin the next main section of the book of Obadiah and it goes from verses 2-16.  Dr. Wiersbe entitles this section “God’s message to Edom.”  We will see in this section two different messages from the prophet. First we will look at why God will judge Edom and find out that God would take away from them everything they felt would keep them safe.  Next we will look at Obadiah explain why God was judging Edom and in this section he will name four ways in which the Edomites had sinned against the Jews and the Lord.

I am not sure how far we will get in this SD, but we will begin this first section in today’s SD.

We want to look at what kind of judgment that God promised to send to Edom.  In verses 2-4 God says that He will take them down because of their pride:  “2 “Behold, I will make you small among the nations; You are greatly despised. 3 “The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who live in the clefts of the rock, In the loftiness of your dwelling place, Who say in your heart, ’Who will bring me down to earth?’ 4 “Though you build high like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," declares the LORD.”

“2 "Listen to this, Edom: I’m turning you to a no-account, the runt of the godless nations, despised. 3 You thought you were so great, perched high among the rocks, king of the mountain, Thinking to yourself, ‘Nobody can get to me! Nobody can touch me!’ 4 Think again. Even if, like an eagle, you hang out on a high cliff-face, Even if you build your nest in the stars, I’ll bring you down to earth." GOD’s sure Word (Message).”

Now we can see why Edom was so arrogant, but that will do them no good when they are dealing with the God of heaven who spoke and the earth came into existence.  You can’t thumb your nose against God for even though He does not always act in what we would call in a hurry, He will act when it is time for Him to act.  Now we can see from these verses that the Edomites thought that they were a great people, but God tells them that He will make them small among the nations.  Proverbs 16:18 has much to say about Edom “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Now we will look at verses 5-6 as we will conclude this SD with those verses:  “5 “If thieves came to you, If robbers by night-O how you will be ruined!-Would they not steal only until they had enough? If grape gatherers came to you, Would they not leave some gleanings? 6 “O how Esau will be ransacked, And his hidden treasures searched out!”

“5 “If thieves crept up on you, they’d rob you blind—isn’t that so? If they mugged you on the streets at night, they’d pick you clean—isn’t that so? 6 Oh, they’ll take Esau apart, piece by piece, empty his purse and pockets (Message).”

Edom was in a really good position to accumulate much wealth, for they could did copper in the mountains and sell it, and they were also on a major trade route so they could tax people coming through their land.  God says that their wealth will be no more as we can see in these two verses, again I believe that pride has a lot to do with this.  After God’s judgment this will be the end of Edom’s riches.
