God Will Deliver You (Obadiah 1:17-18)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 11/14/2015 6:08 PM

My Worship Time                                                                            Focus:  God Will Deliver You

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Obad. 1:17-18

Message of the verses:  We begin looking at the last five verses in this shortest of the OT books, the book of Obadiah and Dr. Warren Wiersbe entitles this last section “God’s message to the Jewish people,” and we have mentioned in many of our SD’s on the OT prophets that the Lord usually has some encouraging news for the nation of Israel during the writings of these OT prophets.  What Obadiah has done is finished his message to the people of Edom and now will give three promises to the Jewish people, his own people and we will begin to look at these today, and maybe we will get to all of them and maybe we will only get to one or two of them.  The first one is entitled “God will deliver you” and we shall look at verses 17-18 for this promise:  “17 "But on Mount Zion there will be those who escape, And it will be holy. And the house of Jacob will possess their possessions. 18 “Then the house of Jacob will be a fire And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau will be as stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them, So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau," For the LORD has spoken.

Some pretty harsh words for the nation of Edom as opposed to some very good news for the nation of Israel in these verses.  Now we have been through what is going to happen to the nation of Israel once they were taken captive by the Babylonians, for they will be there for seventy years according to Jeremiah 25:11 “’This whole land will be a desolation and a horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.”  Jer. 29:10 “For thus says the LORD, ’When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place.”  Next we see that this prophecy was fulfilled and then the Lord Jesus would come some 400 years after that and would die for the sins of the world and then go back to heaven.  In 70 AD the nation of Israel was defeated by the Romans and were sent packing around the world.  In May of 1948 God called Israel back to their nation where they are at this time and the next thing that will happen to them is that the Antichrist will make a seven year pact with them which he will break half way through it and many of the children of Israel will die.  This time period is called the Tribulation Period and will last for seven years and this is what the Bible calls the Day of the Lord, something we have mentioned many times before.  At the end of the Tribulation Period the Lord Jesus returns to stop the war of Armageddon and clean up the almost destroyed earth and then He will rule and reign from Jerusalem for 1000 years on David’s throne.  That is the very short version of what will happen to Israel.

Dr. Wiersbe writes “It appears from Isaiah 11:10-16, a parallel passage, that Moab and Edom will be restored as nations in the last days, but the Jews will burn them as stubble (see Ex. 15:7; Isaiah 10:17; Matt. 3:12 for parallels).”  We will save the last two promise for our next SD as that will complete our study of Obadiah and then we will move on to a study from the book of Jonah.  I’m looking forward to that one.
