PT-3 Divine Judgment Declared (Obad. 1:10-11)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 11/10/2015 10:01 PM

My Worship Time                                                            Focus:  PT-3 Divine Judgment Declared

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Obadiah 1:10-11

Message of the verses:  “10 "Because of violence to your brother Jacob, You will be covered with shame, And you will be cut off forever. 11  "On the day that you stood aloof, On the day that strangers carried off his wealth, And foreigners entered his gate And cast lots for Jerusalem- You too were as one of them.”

What we are looking at in verses 10-16 is Obadiah Defends God’s Judgment of the Nation.  Dr. Wiersbe writes “The Edomites were guilty of at least four abominable sins, the first of which was using violence against their brothers, the Jews (vv. 10-11).”  This hatred goes all the way back to when Jacob deprived Esau out of his birthright, something that was really not going to go to him anyway, but the way that it went to him was enough to make anyone mad.   Because of this the hatred grew between Jacob and his descendents and Esau and his descendents.

If the Edomites would have been doing the right thing in the eyes of God they would have helped their brother and not hurt them.  Jesus gives a story in the 10th chapter of the book of Luke to show how to treat your neighbor, and in the case of Judah they were more than a neighbor to Esau, they were brothers:  “30 Jesus replied and said, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 31 “And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 “Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.”  These verses show what Esau did for Judah, and they did the wrong thing.

We will conclude with a couple of quotes from the OT authors Solomon in Proverbs 24:11-2 and also Amos 1:11 to show how these verses are appropriate here:  “11 ¶  Deliver those who are being taken away to death, And those who are staggering to slaughter, Oh hold them back. 12  If you say, "See, we did not know this," Does He not consider it who weighs the hearts? And does He not know it who keeps your soul? And will He not render to man according to his work?”  “11  Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of Edom and for four I will not revoke its punishment, Because he pursued his brother with the sword, While he stifled his compassion; His anger also tore continually, And he maintained his fury forever.”
