PT-1 Look Ahead: Coronation (Hag. 2:20-23)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 4/5/2016 10:23 PM
My Worship Time             Focus:  PT-1 Look Ahead:  Coronation
Bible Reading & Meditation    Reference:  Haggai 2:20-23
Message of the verses:  “20 Then the word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying, 21 “Speak to Zerubbabel governor of Judah, saying, ’I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. 22 ’I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots and their riders, and the horses and their riders will go down, everyone by the sword of another.’ 23  ’On that day,’ declares the LORD of hosts, ’I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,’ declares the LORD, ’and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,’" declares the LORD of hosts.”
The main person that we want to talk about as we look at this section is Zerubbable, and we will see him again as we look at the book of Zechariah in a few days.  As we look at this section we see that the Word of the Lord once again came to Haggai for a second time as stated in verse twenty, and in verse twenty-one he says that the Word of the Lord was for Zerubbable who was the governor of Judah.  Zerubbable was actually more than that as he was the ancestor of King Jehoiachin or Coniah the same person with two names.  If memory services me correctly Nebuchadnezzar renamed him, and he was a bad king of Judah.  Jeremiah writes “"As I live," declares the LORD, "even though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were a signet ring on My right hand, yet I would pull you off (22:24).”  Now when we look at verse 23 we see “and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of hosts.”  Big difference between these two men, but as we will see Zerubbable was an important link in the Davidic line to the Messiah as seen in Matthew 1:12 and also Luke 3:27, as he is in the genealogy of our Lord.  Another thing the Lord calls Zerubbable is that He is My servant which was a exclusive title reserved for special chosen people which he surely was one.
We are looking at the time period of when the children of Israel came back from captivity and are now in the process of building the next temple, and were having a difficult time in completing the task, but this message by Haggai from the Lord to Zerubbable will give a jump start to getting the job done.
I want to give a couple of quotes from Dr. Wiersbe at this time:  “The people of Israel would have many centuries of struggle and suffering before them, but the Messiah would come, and one day, Israel’s enemies would be defeated and the glorious kingdom established.”  Haggai speaks of this time in this section as we look at verse 22.
“As you read the Old Testament, you see how ‘salvation history’ progressed from age to age, always moving toward the fulfillment of the messianic promise.  Many people played different roles in the drama, but each of them was important.  Abraham founded the nation, and Isaac and Jacob built it.  Joseph protected it in Egypt and Moses redeemed the people from Egypt.  Joshua gave them their promised inheritance, and David established the kingdom.  In spite of sin, suffering, and failures, the Davidic line never ceased, and the day came when Jesus Christ, the Son of David, was born in Bethlehem.”
Now as we look at the following short quote from Warren Wiersbe we will see why we still have some more work to do in the book of Haggai.  “We can’t leave Haggai without noting some practical lessons for God’s people today.”  Well I hope that those practical lessons will come in tomorrow’s SD as we look to finish the book of Haggai with those lessons.
