SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 4/7/2016 12:17 PM
My Worship Time Focus: The Confusion PT-1
Bible Reading &
Meditation Reference: John 6:34-40
Message of the verses: “34 “But the testimony which I receive is not
from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 “He was the lamp
that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in
his light. 36 "But the testimony
which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the
Father has given Me to accomplish-the very works that I do-testify about Me,
that the Father has sent Me. 37
"And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have
neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38 “You do not have His
word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. 39 “You search
the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these
that testify about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may
have life.”
We first
need to back up and look again at verses 30-31 to see the crowd’s second
request of Jesus: “30 So they said to
Him, "What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You?
What work do You perform? 31 “Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as
it is written, ’HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.’"” Now the people missed the point that Jesus
will make in verses 32-33 “32 Jesus then
said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given
you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread
out of heaven. 33 “For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven,
and gives life to the world."” They
missed this point, that is that what Jesus is talking about here is spiritual
bread and not physical bread, as they ask Him to give them this bread. They wanted to be feed like the children of
Israel were fed in the wilderness when God gave them physical bread called
Manna which means “what is it.” John
MacArthur writes “Having first insisted that He prove Himself, they now
insisted that He give them what they wanted.
Kurios (Lord) would be better
understood as their way of saying, ‘Sir’ (as in 4:11, 15, 19, 49; 5:7; 12:21;
20:15; Matt. 13:27; 21:30; 27:63; Luke 13:8), since it is clear from verse 36
that the crowd did not truly believe in Jesus.”
Since the
crowd had no idea what Jesus was talking about we see Him reply with the first
of seven “I AM’s” in the gospel of John stating “I am the bread of life.” He is telling the crowd that He was not
referring to physical bread but to Himself and being the true bread that comes
down from heaven. Jesus had promised to
give them this in verse 27 “"Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures
to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the
Father, God, has set His seal.’” When we
looked at chapter four and the woman at the well and not at chapter six where
we see bread and as Jesus says that these can satisfy those who He was talking
to He was speaking of the spiritual realm, and not the physical realm because
one meal of fish and bread and one drink of water cannot possibly fulfill a person’s
physical need for a life time, but Jesus can fulfill the spiritual satisfaction
for eternity if one believes who He is and what He came to do for them.
At this
point we will conclude this SD as the next thing that we will look at has to do
with salvation and the words “come” and “believe,” and this will take us a lot
of time to go over them so I will wait to do that section in our next SD.
Answer to yesterday’s Bible question: “Galatians” this is the answer that I have on
my card, but I believe that the book of Ephesians was also a circuit letter
that went to more than one church.
Today’s Bible question:
What two birds did Noah send out of the ark?”
Answer in our next SD.
