The Indictment (Matt. 12:2)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 1/10/2022 9:34 AM

My Worship Time                                                                                    Focus:  “The Indictment”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                      Reference:  Matthew 12:2

Message of the verse:  2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, "Behold, Your disciples do what is not lawful to do on a Sabbath.’”

The first thing that I want to mention is that this will be a very short SD, as we will only be looking at what these very foolish Pharisees were asking our Lord.  Another thing I would like to know is why were these Pharisees out in this grain field in the first place, as we can be sure that they were more than 3000 feet from their houses.  MacArthur thinks that perhaps these men had certain exceptions that were made for those self-appointed guardians of tradition.  Kind of like the politicians of our day when they say we all should wear masks and then we see many pictures of them without masks.  In our world today we sometimes see policemen breaking the law in order to catch a speeder or crook, so this may be what these Pharisees were doing.

MacArthur writes “The charge that Jesus’ ‘disciples’ were doing ‘what is not lawful to do on a Sabbath’ was itself sinful, because it put human tradition on a par with “God’s own Word.  Rabbinic tradition was not legitimate Jewish law, but many centuries of observance had given it that status in the minds of most Jews, especially the legalistic scribes and Pharisees.  God’s Word was honored in name and was the supposed basic used as a means to justify the traditions, many of which actually contradicted and ‘invalidated the word of “God’ (Matt. 15:6).”

I think what we have here is that these Pharisees believed that they could work their way into heaven by adding to the Mosaic law that God gave while Moses was on the mountain found in the book of Exodus where the entire law was given to him along with details about building the tabernacle where the offerings were to be given.  Also the Priesthood for Israel was given there on the mountain.  Moses was a bit over 80 years old when he got all of these things from the Lord and it seems that he memorized all that the Lord had given to him and then came down and began to put them into practice along with building all the things that had to do with the tabernacle, which was about the worship of our Lord.  What we see here is also something that were pictures of our Lord as seen in the book of Hebrews.  After the death of Jesus on the cross the curtain between the holy place and the Holy of Holies was torn into from top to bottom which in effect ended Judaism.

What these Pharisees were doing was indicting the Lord and His disciples for disobeying their distorted, man-made traditions, thus perverting God’s intention for the Sabbath, which was to provide man with a special day of rest, not a painful day of burdens.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It is my desire to just do the things that God has in mind for me to do, and if I see myself doing things that go against the written Word of God, then I must stop doing them, after confessing them to the Lord as being sinful.  In order for me to understand what I am to be doing for the cause of Christ I must be in the Word of God each day, and also be praying that the Lord will show me the things that I am to do for the cause of Christ.

My Steps of Faith For Today:  Trust the Lord to continue to do the things that He has planned for me to do, which were planned in eternity past.
