PT-2 "The Source" (Matt. 16:17b)

My Worship Time                                                                                 Focus:  PT-2 “The Source”

 

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Matthew 16:17b

 

            Message of the verse:  “because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”

 

            We continue to look at this last half of verse 17 in which Jesus is telling Peter that for him to understand that Jesus was the Christ that it was not through flesh and blood that he understand this.  I would think that the Holy Spirit had to be a part of this understanding that was given to Him, but let me quote from MacArthur’s commentary to give his understanding about how Peter got this information:  “From the gospel accounts it seems clear that the Father disclosed the Son primarily through the Son Himself. There is no record of intimation that any divine revelation was given to the Twelve during Jesus’ earthly ministry other than that given through Jesus Himself.  As the light of Jesus’ teaching and the significance of His miraculous power began to dawn on them, the Spirit opened their minds to see Him as the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

 

            As we look through the different Gospel accounts we see that Jesus had made many astounding claims about Himself, and I have to say that many of these accounts were in fulfillment of different OT prophecies that were written about Him before He came to earth. 

 

            Another of the things that He was doing to prove He was indeed the Messiah was miracles and He did many as John tells us at the end of his Gospel “25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written” (John 21:25).

 

            That is all that I am going to do this morning as the reminder of this section I believe will have to be quoted from MacArthur’s commentary and what he has written in his commentary came from his sermon on this section and I have to say that it was all new to me, at least most of it and so I want to make sure that all who read this know what MacArthur is teaching here.
